2 Samuel 8 - 9
David Strikes Down Nations
Now it happened afterwards, that David struck the Philistines and subdued them; and David took control of the chief city from the hand of the Philistines. 2 He also struck Moab, and measured them with the line, making them lie down on the ground; and he measured two lines to put to death and one full line to keep alive. And the Moabites became servants to David, bringing tribute. 3 Then David struck Hadadezer, the son of Rehob king of Zobah, as he went to restore his power at the River. 4 And David captured from him 1,700 horsemen and 20,000 foot soldiers; and David hamstrung all the chariot horses, but left enough of them for 100 chariots. 5 Then the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer, king of Zobah. And David struck down 22,000 Arameans. 6 Then David placed garrisons among the Arameans of Damascus; and the Arameans became servants to David, bringing tribute. And Yahweh granted salvation to David wherever he went. 7 And David took the small shields of gold which were carried by the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. 8 Also from Betah and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, King David took a very large amount of bronze. 9 Then Toi king of Hamath heard that David had struck down all the military force of Hadadezer, 10 so Toi sent Joram his son to King David to greet him and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and struck him down; for Hadadezer had been at war with Toi. And in Joram’s hand were articles of silver, of gold, and of bronze. 11 King David also set these apart as holy to Yahweh, with the silver and the gold that he had set apart as holy from all the nations which he had subdued: 12 from Aram, Moab, the sons of Ammon, the Philistines, Amalek, and from the spoil of Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah. 13 So David made a name for himself when he returned from striking down 18,000 Arameans in the Valley of Salt. 14 Then he placed garrisons in Edom. In all Edom he placed garrisons, and all the Edomites became servants to David. And Yahweh granted salvation to David wherever he went. 15 So David reigned over all Israel; and David was doing justice and righteousness for all his people. 16 Now Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army, and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder; 17 and Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were priests, and Seraiah was scribe; 18 and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and the sons of David were priests. David’s Lovingkindness to Mephibosheth
Then David said, “Is there yet anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him lovingkindness for Jonathan’s sake?” 2 Now there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was Ziba, and they called him to David; and the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?” And he said, “I am your servant.” 3 And the king said, “Is there not yet anyone of the house of Saul to whom I may show the lovingkindness of God?” And Ziba said to the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan who is crippled in both feet.” 4 So the king said to him, “Where is he?” And Ziba said to the king, “Behold, he is in the house of Machir the son of Ammiel in Lo-debar.” 5 Then King David sent and took him from the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, from Lo-debar. 6 So Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, came to David and fell on his face and prostrated himself. And David said, “Mephibosheth.” And he said, “Here is your servant!” 7 And David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show lovingkindness to you for the sake of your father Jonathan, and will restore to you all the land of your grandfather Saul; and you shall eat at my table continually.” 8 So he prostrated himself and said, “What is your servant, that you should regard a dead dog like me?” 9 Then the king called Saul’s young man Ziba and said to him, “All that belonged to Saul and to all his house I have given to your master’s grandson. 10 And you and your sons and your servants shall cultivate the land for him, and you shall bring in the produce so that your master’s grandson may have food and eat of it; nevertheless Mephibosheth your master’s grandson shall eat at my table continually.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants. 11 Then Ziba said to the king, “According to all that my lord the king commands his servant so your servant will do.” So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table as one of the king’s sons. 12 Now Mephibosheth had a young son whose name was Mica. And all who lived in the house of Ziba were servants to Mephibosheth. 13 So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, for he ate at the king’s table continually. Now he was lame in both feet.
1 Chronicles 18
David Strikes Down Nations
Now it happened afterwards, that David struck the Philistines and subdued them and took Gath and its towns from the hand of the Philistines. 2 He also struck Moab, and the Moabites became servants to David, bringing tribute. 3 Then David struck Hadadezer king of Zobah as far as Hamath, as he went to set up his power at the Euphrates River. 4 And David captured from him 1,000 chariots and 7,000 horsemen and 20,000 foot soldiers, and David hamstrung all the chariot horses, but left enough of them for 100 chariots. 5 Then the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah. And David struck down 22,000 men of the Arameans. 8 Also from Tibhath and from Cun, cities of Hadadezer, David took a very large amount of bronze, with which Solomon made the bronze sea and the pillars and the bronze utensils. 9 Then Tou king of Hamath heard that David had struck down all the military force of Hadadezer king of Zobah, 10 so he sent Hadoram his son to King David to greet him and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and struck him down; for Hadadezer had been at war with Tou. And Hadoram brought all kinds of articles of gold and silver and bronze. 11 King David also set these apart as holy to Yahweh with the silver and the gold which he had carried away from all the nations: from Edom, Moab, the sons of Ammon, the Philistines, and from Amalek. 12 Moreover, Abishai the son of Zeruiah smote 18,000 of Edom in the Valley of Salt. 13 Then he placed garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became servants to David. And Yahweh granted salvation to David wherever he went. 14 So David reigned over all Israel; and he was doing justice and righteousness for all his people. 15 Now Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army, and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder; 16 and Zadok the son of Ahitub and Abimelech the son of Abiathar were priests, and Shavsha was scribe; 17 and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and the sons of David were chiefs at the king’s side.
2 Peter 3
The Day of the Lord Will Come
This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, 2 that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles, 3 knowing this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, 4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.” 5 For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, 6 through which the world at that time was destroyed, being deluged with water. 7 But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. 8 But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. 9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some consider slowness, but is patient toward you, not willing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be found out. 11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens burning will be destroyed, and the elements will melt with intense heat! 13 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. Be on Your Guard
14 Therefore, beloved, since you are looking for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless, 15 and consider the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, 16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. 17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard lest you, having been carried away by the error of unprincipled men, fall from your own steadfastness, 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
Proverbs 29
A man who hardens his neck after much reproof
Will suddenly be broken beyond healing.
2 When the righteous increase, the people are glad,
But when a wicked man rules, people groan.
3 A man who loves wisdom makes his father glad,
But he who befriends harlots destroys his wealth.
4 By justice the king causes the land to stand,
But a man of bribes tears it down.
5 A man who flatters his neighbor
Is spreading a net for his steps.
6 By transgression an evil man is ensnared,
But the righteous sings with joy and is glad.
7 The righteous knows the cause of the poor,
The wicked does not understand that knowledge.
8 Scoffers set a city aflame,
But wise men turn away anger.
9 When a wise man is brought into judgment with a man who is an ignorant fool,
The ignorant fool both rages and laughs, and there is no rest.
10 Men of bloodshed hate the blameless,
But the upright seek the well‑being of his soul.
11 A fool lets out all of his spirit,
But a wise man holds it back.
12 If a ruler pays attention to a lying word,
All his ministers become wicked.
13 The poor man and the oppressor meet together in this—
Yahweh gives light to the eyes of both.
14 If a king judges the poor with truth,
His throne will be established forever.
15 The rod and reproof give wisdom,
But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.
16 When the wicked increase, transgression increases;
But the righteous will see their fall.
17 Discipline your son, and he will give you rest;
And he will give delight to your soul.
18 Where there is no vision, the people are out of control,
But how blessed is he who keeps the law.
19 A slave will not be corrected by words alone;
For though he understands, there will be no answer.
20 Do you behold a man who is hasty in his words?
There is more hope for a fool than for him.
21 He who pampers his slave from childhood
Will in the end find him to be arrogant.
22 An angry man stirs up strife,
And a hot‑tempered man abounds in transgression.
23 A man’s lofty pride will bring him low,
But a lowly spirit will take hold of glory.
24 He who divides the spoil with a thief hates his own soul;
He hears the oath but declares nothing.
25 Trembling before man brings a snare,
But he who trusts in Yahweh will be set securely on high.
26 Many seek the face of a ruler,
But justice for man comes from Yahweh.
27 An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous,
And he who is upright in the way is an abomination to the wicked.
