Deuteronomy 5 - 6

The Ten Commandments Repeated

Then Moses summoned all Israel and said to them: “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the judgments which I am speaking today in your hearing, that you may learn them and be careful to do them.
2 Yahweh our God cut a covenant with us at Horeb. 3 Yahweh did not cut this covenant with our fathers, but with us, with all those of us alive here today. 4 Yahweh spoke to you face to face at the mountain from the midst of the fire. 5 I was standing between Yahweh and you at that time, to declare to you the word of Yahweh; for you were afraid because of the fire and did not go up the mountain. He said, 6
‘I am Yahweh your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
7
‘You shall have no other gods before Me.
8
‘You shall not make for yourself an idol—any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
9
You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,
10
but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
11
‘You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain, for Yahweh will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.
12
‘Observe the sabbath day to keep it holy, as Yahweh your God commanded you.
13
Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
14
but the seventh day is a sabbath of Yahweh your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male slave or your female slave or your ox or your donkey or any of your cattle or your sojourner who is within your gates, so that your male slave and your female slave may rest as well as you.
15
You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and Yahweh your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm; therefore Yahweh your God commanded you to observe the sabbath day.
16
‘Honor your father and your mother, as Yahweh your God has commanded you, that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you on the land which Yahweh your God gives you.
17
‘You shall not murder.
18
‘You shall not commit adultery.
19
‘You shall not steal.
20
‘You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
21
‘You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, and you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, or his male slave or his female slave, his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.’
22 “These words Yahweh spoke to all your assembly at the mountain from the midst of the fire, of the cloud and of the dense gloom, with a great voice, and He added no more. He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. 23 Now it happened that when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes and your elders. 24 And you said, ‘Behold, Yahweh our God has shown us His glory and His greatness, and we have heard His voice from the midst of the fire; we have seen today that God speaks with man, yet he lives. 25 So now then why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of Yahweh our God any longer, then we will die. 26 For who is there of all flesh who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived? 27 As for you, go near and hear all that Yahweh our God says; then speak to us all that Yahweh our God speaks to you, and we will hear and do it.28 “And Yahweh heard the voice of your words when you spoke to me, and Yahweh said to me, ‘I have heard the voice of the words of this people which they have spoken to you. They have done well in all that they have spoken. 29 Oh that they had such a heart in them, that they would fear Me and keep all My commandments all the days, that it may be well with them and with their sons forever! 30 Go, say to them, “Return to your tents.” 31 But as for you, stand here by Me, that I may speak to you all the commandments and the statutes and the judgments which you shall teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess.’ 32 So you shall be careful to do just as Yahweh your God has commanded you; you shall not turn aside to the right or to the left. 33 In all the way which Yahweh your God has commanded you, you shall walk, that you may live and that it may be well with you and that you may prolong your days in the land which you will possess.

The Commandment to Love Yahweh

“Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the judgments, which Yahweh your God has commanded me to teach you, that you might do it in the land where you are going over to possess it,
2 so that you and your son and your grandson might fear Yahweh your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I am commanding you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged. 3 O Israel, you shall listen and be careful to do it, that it may be well with you and that you may multiply greatly, just as Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey. 4 “Hear, O Israel! Yahweh is our God, Yahweh is one! 5 You shall love Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall speak of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as phylacteries between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. 10 “Then it will be, when Yahweh your God brings you into the land which He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you, great and good cities which you did not build, 11 and houses full of all good things which you did not fill, and hewn cisterns which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant, and you will eat and be satisfied, 12 then beware, lest you forget Yahweh who brought you from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 13 Yahweh your God you shall fear; and Him you shall serve; and by His name you shall swear. 14 You shall not walk after other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who surround you, 15 for Yahweh your God in the midst of you is a jealous God—lest the anger of Yahweh your God be kindled against you, and He destroy you from the face of the earth. 16 “You shall not put Yahweh your God to the test, as you tested Him at Massah. 17 You should diligently keep the commandments of Yahweh your God and His testimonies and His statutes which He has commanded you. 18 And you shall do what is right and good in the sight of Yahweh, that it may be well with you and that you may go in and possess the good land which Yahweh swore to give your fathers, 19 by driving out all your enemies from before you, as Yahweh has spoken. 20 “When your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What do the testimonies and the statutes and the judgments mean which Yahweh our God commanded you?’ 21 then you shall say to your son, ‘We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and Yahweh brought us from Egypt with a strong hand. 22 Moreover, Yahweh showed great and calamitous signs and wonders before our eyes against Egypt, Pharaoh, and all his household; 23 but He brought us out from there in order to bring us in, to give us the land which He had sworn to our fathers.’ 24 So Yahweh commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear Yahweh our God for our good all our days and for our survival, as it is today. 25 And it will be righteousness for us if we are careful to do all this commandment before Yahweh our God, just as He commanded us.

Romans 16

Final Instructions and Greetings

Now I commend to you our sister Phoebe, who is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea;
2 that you receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and that you help her in whatever matter she may have need of you; for she herself has also been a benefactor of many, and of myself as well. 3
Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus,
4
who for my life risked their own necks, to whom not only do I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles;
5
also greet the church that is in their house.
Greet Epaenetus, my beloved, who is the first convert to Christ from Asia.
6
Greet Mary, who has labored much for you.
7

8
Greet Ampliatus, my beloved in the Lord.
9
Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in Christ, and Stachys my beloved.
10
Greet Apelles, the approved in Christ. Greet those who are of the household of Aristobulus.
11
Greet Herodion, my kinsman.

13
Greet Rufus, a choice man in the Lord, also his mother and mine.
14

15

16
Greet one another with a holy kiss.
All the churches of Christ greet you.
17 Now I urge you, brothers, to keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and stumblings contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them. 18 For such men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own stomach, and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting. 19 For the report of your obedience has reached to all. Therefore I am rejoicing over you, but I want you to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil. 20 And the God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you. 21 Timothy my fellow worker greets you, and so do Lucius and Jason and Sosipater, my kinsmen. 22 I, Tertius, who wrote this letter, greet you in the Lord. 23 Gaius, host to me and to the whole church, greets you. Erastus, the city treasurer greets you, and Quartus, the brother. 24 [The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.] 25 Now to Him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret for long ages past, 26 but now is manifested, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the Gentiles, leading to obedience of faith; 27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, be the glory forever. Amen.

Psalm 107:23 - 107:43

23
Those who go down to the sea in ships,
Who do business on many waters;
24
They have seen the works of Yahweh,
And His wondrous deeds in the deep.
25
He spoke and set up a stormy wind,
Which raised up the waves of the sea.
26
They went up to the heavens, they went down to the depths;
Their soul melted away in the calamity.
27
They staggered and swayed like a drunken man,
And all their wisdom was swallowed up.
28
Then they cried to Yahweh in their trouble,
And He brought them out of their distresses.
29
He caused the storm to stand still,
So that its waves were hushed.
30
Then they were glad because they were quiet,
So He led them to their desired haven.
31
Let them give thanks to Yahweh for His lovingkindness,
And for His wondrous deeds to the sons of men!
32
Let them exalt Him also in the assembly of the people,
And praise Him at the seat of the elders.

33
He makes rivers into a wilderness
And springs of water into a thirsty ground;
34
A fruitful land into a salt waste,
Because of the evil of those who inhabited it.
35
He makes a wilderness into a pool of water
And a dry land into springs of water;
36
And there He causes the hungry to inhabit,
So that they may establish an inhabited city,
37
And sow fields and plant vineyards,
And produce a fruitful harvest.
38
Also He blesses them and they multiply greatly,
And He does not let their cattle decrease.

39
But when they decrease and are bowed down
Through oppression, evil, and sorrow,
40
He pours contempt upon nobles
And makes them wander in a pathless void.
41
But He sets the needy securely on high away from affliction,
And makes his families like a flock.
42
The upright see it and are glad;
But all unrighteousness shuts its mouth.
43
Who is wise? Let him keep these things,
And carefully consider the lovingkindnesses of Yahweh.
