Jacob Goes Up to Bethel

35Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to ^aBethel and ¹live there, and make an altar there to ^bGod, who appeared to you ^cwhen you fled ²from your brother Esau.” ²So Jacob said to his ^ahousehold and to all who were with him, “Put away ^bthe foreign gods which are among you and ^ccleanse yourselves and change your garments; ³and let us arise and go up to Bethel, and I will make ^aan altar there to God, ^bwho answered me in the day of my distress and ^chas been with me ¹wherever I have gone.” ⁴So they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods which ¹they had and the rings which were in their ears, and Jacob hid them under the ²oak which was near Shechem.

⁵Then they journeyed on, and there was ¹^,^aa terror from God upon the cities which were around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. ⁶So Jacob came to ^aLuz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him. ⁷^aAnd he built an altar there and called the place ¹El-bethel, because there God had revealed Himself to him when he fled ²from his brother. ⁸Then ^aDeborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the oak; it was named ¹Allon-bacuth.

Jacob Is Renamed Israel

⁹Then God appeared to Jacob again when he came from Paddan-aram, and He ^ablessed him. ¹⁰^aAnd God said to him, “Your name is Jacob;Your name shall no longer be called Jacob,But Israel shall be your name.” Thus He called his name Israel.¹¹God also said to him, “I am ¹^,^aGod Almighty;^bBe fruitful and multiply;A nation and an ^cassembly of nations shall ²come from you,And ^dkings shall ³come forth from your loins.

¹²“^aAnd the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac,I will give it to you,And I will give the land to your seed after you.”

¹³Then ^aGod went up from him in the place where He had spoken with him. ¹⁴And Jacob set up ^aa pillar in the place where He had spoken with him, a pillar of stone, and he poured out a drink offering on it; he also poured oil on it. ¹⁵So Jacob named the place where God had spoken with him, ¹^,^aBethel.

¹⁶Then they journeyed from Bethel; and there was still some distance to go to ^aEphrath, and Rachel gave birth, and she ¹suffered severely in her labor. ¹⁷Now it happened that when she was in severe labor the midwife said to her, “Do not fear, for now ^ayou have another son.” ¹⁸Now it happened as her soul was departing (for she died), that she named him ¹Ben-oni; but his father called him ²Benjamin. ¹⁹So ^aRachel died and was buried on the way to ^bEphrath (that is, Bethlehem). ²⁰And Jacob set up a pillar over her grave; that is the ^apillar of Rachel’s grave to this day. ²¹Then Israel journeyed on and pitched his tent beyond the ¹^,^atower of ²Eder.

The Sons of Jacob

²²Now it happened while Israel was dwelling in that land, that ^aReuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine, and Israel heard of it. And there were twelve sons of Jacob—

²³^athe sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, then Simeon and Levi and Judah and Issachar and Zebulun; ²⁴^athe sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin; ²⁵and ^athe sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s servant-woman: Dan and Naphtali; ²⁶and ^athe sons of Zilpah, Leah’s servant-woman: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-aram.

²⁷And Jacob came to his father Isaac at ^aMamre of ^bKiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had sojourned.

²⁸Now the days of Isaac were ^a180 years. ²⁹And Isaac breathed his last and died and was ^agathered to his people, an ^bold man and full of days; and ^chis sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

The Generations of Esau

36Now these are the generations of ^aEsau (that is, Edom).

²Esau ^atook his wives from the daughters of Canaan: Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and ^bOholibamah the daughter of Anah and the ^cgranddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite; ³also Basemath, Ishmael’s daughter, the sister of Nebaioth. ⁴And Adah bore ^aEliphaz to Esau, and Basemath bore Reuel, ⁵and Oholibamah bore Jeush and Jalam and Korah. These are the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan.

⁶^aThen Esau took his wives and his sons and his daughters and all ¹his household, and his livestock and all his cattle and all his acquired goods, which he had accumulated in the land of Canaan, and he went to a land away from his brother Jacob. ⁷^aFor their possessions had become too great for them to ¹live together, and the ^bland where they ^csojourned could not sustain them because of their livestock. ⁸So Esau lived in the hill country of ^aSeir; Esau is ^bEdom.

⁹These then are the generations of Esau the father of ¹the Edomites in the hill country of Seir. ¹⁰These are the names of Esau’s sons: Eliphaz the son of Esau’s wife Adah, Reuel the son of Esau’s wife Basemath. ¹¹The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, ¹Zepho and Gatam and Kenaz. ¹²Timna was a concubine of Esau’s son Eliphaz, and she bore ^aAmalek to Eliphaz. These are the sons of Esau’s wife Adah. ¹³These are the sons of Reuel: Nahath and Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah. These were the sons of Esau’s wife Basemath. ¹⁴These were the sons of Esau’s wife Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah and the ¹granddaughter of Zibeon: ²she bore to Esau, Jeush and Jalam and Korah.

¹⁵These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau. The sons of Eliphaz, the firstborn of Esau, are chief Teman, chief Omar, chief Zepho, chief Kenaz, ¹⁶chief Korah, chief Gatam, chief Amalek. These are the chiefs ¹descended from Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Adah. ¹⁷These are the sons of Reuel, Esau’s son: chief Nahath, chief Zerah, chief Shammah, chief Mizzah. These are the chiefs ¹descended from Reuel in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Esau’s wife Basemath. ¹⁸These are the sons of Esau’s wife Oholibamah: chief Jeush, chief Jalam, chief Korah. These are the chiefs ¹descended from Esau’s wife Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah. ¹⁹These are the sons of Esau (that is, Edom), and these are their chiefs.

²⁰These are the sons of Seir ^athe Horite, the inhabitants of the land: Lotan and Shobal and Zibeon and Anah, ²¹and Dishon and Ezer and Dishan. These are the chiefs ¹descended from the Horites, the sons of Seir in the land of Edom. ²²The sons of Lotan were Hori and ¹Hemam; and Lotan’s sister was Timna. ²³These are the sons of Shobal: ¹Alvan and Manahath and Ebal, ²Shepho and Onam. ²⁴These are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah—he is the Anah who found the hot springs in the wilderness when he was pasturing the donkeys of his father Zibeon. ²⁵These are the children of Anah: Dishon and Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah. ²⁶These are the sons of ¹^,^aDishon: ²Hemdan and Eshban and Ithran and Cheran. ²⁷These are the sons of Ezer: Bilhan and Zaavan and ¹Akan. ²⁸These are the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran. ²⁹These are the chiefs of the Horites: chief Lotan, chief Shobal, chief Zibeon, chief Anah, ³⁰chief Dishon, chief Ezer, chief Dishan. These are the chiefs ¹descended from the Horites, according to their various chiefs in the land of Seir.

³¹Now these are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any ^aking of the sons of Israel reigned. ³²^aAnd Bela the son of Beor became king in Edom, and the name of his city was Dinhabah. ³³Then Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah became king in his place. ³⁴Then Jobab died, and Husham of the land of the Temanites became king in his place. ³⁵Then Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who struck down Midian in the field of Moab, became king in his place; and the name of his city was Avith. ³⁶Then Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah became king in his place. ³⁷Then Samlah died, and Shaul of Rehoboth on the ¹River became king in his place. ³⁸Then Shaul died, and Baal-hanan the son of Achbor became king in his place. ³⁹Then Baal-hanan the son of Achbor died, and ¹Hadar became king in his place; and the name of his city was ²Pau; and his wife’s name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, daughter of Mezahab.

⁴⁰Now these are the names of the chiefs ¹descended from Esau, according to their families and their places, by their names: chief Timna, chief ²Alvah, chief Jetheth, ⁴¹chief Oholibamah, chief Elah, chief Pinon, ⁴²chief Kenaz, chief Teman, chief Mibzar, ⁴³chief Magdiel, chief Iram. These are the chiefs of Edom (that is, Esau, the father of ¹the Edomites), according to their places of habitation in the land of their possession.

The Plot to Kill Jesus

26¹^,^aNow it happened that when Jesus had finished all these words, He said to His disciples, ²“^aYou know that after two days ^bthe Passover is coming, and the Son of Man is to be ^cdelivered over for crucifixion.”

³^aThen the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in ^bthe court of the high priest, named ^cCaiaphas; ⁴and they ^aplotted together to seize Jesus by stealth and kill Him. ⁵But they were saying, “Not during the festival, ^alest a riot occur among the people.”

The Costly Perfume

⁶^aNow when Jesus was in ^bBethany, at the home of Simon the leper, ⁷^aa woman came to Him with an alabaster jar of very costly perfume, and she poured it on His head as He reclined at the table. ⁸But when the disciples saw this, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? ⁹“For this perfume might have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.” ¹⁰But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you bother the woman? For she has done a good work to Me. ¹¹“For you always have ^athe poor with you; but you do not always have Me. ¹²“For when she poured this perfume on My body, she did it ^ato prepare Me for burial. ¹³“Truly I say to you, ^awherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.”

Judas Looks to Betray Jesus

¹⁴^aThen one of the twelve, named ^bJudas Iscariot, went to the chief priests ¹⁵and said, “What are you willing to give me ¹to ^adeliver Him to you?” And ^bthey weighed out ²thirty pieces of silver to him. ¹⁶And from then on he began looking for a good opportunity to ¹betray ²Jesus.

The Passover Meal

¹⁷^aNow on the first day of ^bUnleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?” ¹⁸And He said, “Go into the city to ^aa certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “^bMy time is near; I am keeping the Passover at your house with My disciples.”’” ¹⁹And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.

²⁰^aNow when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples. ²¹And as they were eating, He said, “^aTruly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” ²²And being deeply grieved, they ¹each one began to say to Him, “Surely not I, Lord?” ²³And He answered and said, “^aHe who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me. ²⁴“The Son of Man is going, ^ajust as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! ^bIt would have been good ¹for that man if he had not been born.” ²⁵And ^aJudas, who was betraying Him, answered and said, “Surely not I, ^bRabbi?” Jesus *said to him, “^cYou yourself said it.”

The Lord’s Supper

²⁶^aNow while they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and ¹^,^bafter a blessing, He broke it. And giving it to the disciples, He said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” ²⁷And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; ²⁸for ^athis is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for ^bmany for forgiveness of sins. ²⁹“But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

³⁰^aAnd after singing a hymn, they went out to ^bthe Mount of Olives.

³¹Then Jesus *said to them, “You will all ¹^,^afall away because of Me this night, for it is written, ‘^bI will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be ^cscattered.’ ³²“But after I have been raised, ^aI will go ahead of you to Galilee.” ³³But Peter answered and said to Him, “Even though all may ¹fall away because of You, I will never fall away.” ³⁴Jesus said to him, “^aTruly I say to you that ^bthis very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” ³⁵Peter *said to Him, “^aEven if I have to die with You, I will not deny You.” All the disciples said the same thing too.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

³⁶^aThen Jesus *came with them to a place called ^bGethsemane, and *said to His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” ³⁷And He took with Him ^aPeter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed. ³⁸Then He *said to them, “^aMy soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and ^bkeep watch with Me.”

³⁹And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let ^athis cup pass from Me; ^byet not as I will, but as You will.” ⁴⁰And He *came to the disciples and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, “So, you men could not ^akeep watch with Me for one hour? ⁴¹“^aKeep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; ^bthe spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

⁴²He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this ^acannot pass away unless I drink it, ^bYour will be done.” ⁴³And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. ⁴⁴And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more. ⁴⁵Then He *came to the disciples and *said to them, “¹Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, ^athe hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. ⁴⁶“Get up, let us go; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!”

The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

⁴⁷^aAnd while He was still speaking, behold, ^bJudas, one of the twelve, came up, and with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people. ⁴⁸Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him.” ⁴⁹And immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, “Greetings, ^aRabbi!” and kissed Him. ⁵⁰And Jesus said to him, “^aFriend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.

⁵¹And behold, ^aone of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew out his ^bsword and struck the ^cslave of the high priest and ¹cut off his ear. ⁵²Then Jesus *said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for ^aall those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. ⁵³“Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve ¹^,^alegions of ^bangels? ⁵⁴“Therefore, how will ^athe Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?”

⁵⁵At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? ^aEvery day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. ⁵⁶“But all this has taken place in order that ^athe Scriptures of the prophets would be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled.

Jesus Before Caiaphas

⁵⁷^aNow those who had seized Jesus led Him away to ^bCaiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. ⁵⁸But ^aPeter was following Him at a distance as far as the ^bcourtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the ¹^,^cofficers to see the outcome.

⁵⁹Now the chief priests and the whole ^aSanhedrin kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. ⁶⁰And they did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on ^atwo came forward, ⁶¹and said, “This man stated, ‘^aI am able to destroy the ¹sanctuary of God and to rebuild it ²in three days.’” ⁶²And the high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You not answer? What are these men testifying against You?” ⁶³But ^aJesus kept silent. ^bAnd the high priest said to Him, “^cI put You under oath by ^dthe living God, that You tell us whether You are the ¹Christ, ^ethe Son of God.” ⁶⁴Jesus *said to him, “^aYou yourself said it; nevertheless I tell you, ¹hereafter you will see ^bthe Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and ^ccoming on the clouds of heaven.”

⁶⁵Then the high priest ^atore his garments and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy; ⁶⁶what do you think?” They answered and said, “^aHe deserves death!”

⁶⁷^aThen they ^bspat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others ¹slapped Him, ⁶⁸and said, “^aProphesy to us, O ¹Christ; who is the one who hit You?”

Peter’s Denials

⁶⁹^aNow Peter was sitting outside in the ^bcourtyard, and a servant-girl came to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.” ⁷⁰But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.” ⁷¹And when he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and *said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” ⁷²And again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man.” ⁷³A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Surely you too are one of them; ^afor even the way you talk ¹gives you away.” ⁷⁴Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed. ⁷⁵And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, “^aBefore a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and cried bitterly.

The Law of Yahweh Is Perfect

The ^aheavens are telling of the glory of God;And the ^bexpanse is declaring the work of His hands.²Day to ^aday pours forth ¹speech,And ^bnight to night reveals knowledge.³There is no ¹speech, nor are there words;Their voice is not heard.⁴Their ¹^,^aline has gone out through all the earth,And their utterances to the end of the world.In them He has ^bplaced a tent for the sun,⁵Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber;It rejoices as a strong man to run his course.⁶Its ^arising is from ¹one end of the heavens,And its circuit to the ²other end of them;And there is nothing hidden from its heat.⁷^aThe law of Yahweh is ¹^,^bperfect, ^crestoring the soul;The testimony of Yahweh is ^dsure, making ^ewise the simple.⁸The precepts of Yahweh are ^aright, ^brejoicing the heart;The commandment of Yahweh is ^cpure, ^denlightening the eyes.⁹The fear of Yahweh is clean, enduring forever;The judgments of Yahweh are ^atrue; they are ^brighteous altogether.¹⁰They are more desirable than ^agold, even more than much fine gold;^bSweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb.¹¹Moreover, by them ^aYour slave is warned;In keeping them there is great ^breward.¹²Who can ^adiscern his errors? ^bAcquit me of ^chidden faults.¹³Also keep back Your slave ^afrom presumptuous sins;Let them not ^brule over me;Then I will be ¹^,^cblameless,And I shall be acquitted of ^dgreat transgression.¹⁴Let the ¹words of my mouth and ^athe meditation of my heartBe acceptable in Your sight,O Yahweh, ^bmy rock and my ^cRedeemer.
