8Now the mainpoint in what is being saidis this: we havesuchaahighpriest, whosatdown at bthe righthand of the throne of the cMajesty in the heavens, 2a aminister1in the 2holyplaces and 3in the btrue4tabernacle, which the Lordcpitched, not man. 3For everyahighpriest is appointedbto offerbothgifts and sacrifices; so it is necessary that thishigh priestalsohavesomething to offer. 4Nowif He were on earth, He would not be a priestatall, since there are those who aoffer the giftsaccording to the Law; 5whoserveaa copy and bshadow of the heavenlythings, just as Moses1was cwarnedby God when he wasabouttoerect the tabernacle; for, “dSee,” He says, “that you makeallthingsaccording to the pattern which was shown you on themountain.” 6But now He has obtained a moreexcellentministry, by as much as He is also the amediator of ba bettercovenant, which has been enacted on betterpromises.
Hebrews 9
The Old Covenant
9Noweven the firstcovenanthadarequirements of divineworship and bthe earthlysanctuary. 2For there was aa tabernacleprepared: the firstpart, in whichwerebthe lampstand and cthe table and dthe 1sacredbread, which is called the holyplace. 3And behindathe secondveil there was a tabernacle which is called the bHoly of Holies, 4having a golden1,aaltarofincense and bthe ark of the covenantcovered on allsides with gold, in which was ca goldenjarholding the manna, and dAaron’srod which budded, and ethe tablets of the covenant. 5And above it were the acherubim of glorybovershadowing the 1mercyseat. Of thesethings we cannotnowspeak in detail.
6Now when thesethings have been soprepared, the priestsaare continually entering the firstpartof thetabernacleperforming the divineworship, 7but into athe second, onlybthe highpriestentersconce a year, dnot withouttakingblood, which he eoffers for himself and for the 1,fsins of the people committed in ignorance. 8aThe HolySpiritisindicatingthis, bthat the way into the holyplaces has not yet been manifested while that firstpartof thetabernacle is stillstanding, 9whichis a symbol for the presenttime. Accordinglyabothgifts and sacrifices are offered which bcannot make the worshiperperfect in conscience, 10since they relateonly to afood and bdrink and variouscwashings, drequirements for the 1bodyimposeduntilea time of reformation.
The New Covenant
11But when Christappearedas a ahighpriest of the bgoodthings1to come, He enteredthroughcthe greater and moreperfecttabernacle, dnot made with hands, that is to say, enot of thiscreation, 12and not throughathe blood of goats and calves, but bthrough His ownblood, He centered the holyplacesdonceforall, 1having obtainedeeternalredemption. 13For ifathe blood of goats and bulls and bthe ashes of a heifersprinklingthose who have been defiledsanctify for the 1cleansing of the flesh, 14howmuchmore will athe blood of Christ, whothrough1,bthe eternalSpiritcofferedHimselfwithoutblemish to God, dcleanse2your conscience from edeadworks to servefthe livingGod?
15And for thisreasonaHe is the bmediator of a cnewcovenant, so that, since a death has takenplace for the redemption of the trespasses that were committedunder the firstcovenant, those who have been dcalled may ereceive the promise of fthe eternalinheritance. 16For where a 1covenant is, there must of necessity2be the death of the one who made it. 17For a 1covenant is validonly when 2men are dead, 3for it is neverinforcewhile the one who made it lives. 18Therefore not even the firstcovenant was inauguratedwithoutblood. 19For when everycommandment had been aspoken by Moses to all the peopleaccording to the Law, bhe took the cblood of the calves and the goats, with dwater and scarletwool and hyssop, and sprinkledbothethe bookitself and all the people, 20saying, “aThis is the blood of the covenantwhich Godcommanded you.” 21And in the sameway, both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry he asprinkled with the blood. 22And according to the 1Law, one mayaalmostsay, allthings are cleansed with blood, and bwithoutsheddingofblood there is noforgiveness.
23Therefore it was necessary for the acopies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these, but bthe heavenlythingsthemselves with bettersacrificesthanthese. 24For Christadid not enterholyplacesmade with hands, merecopies of bthe trueones, but into cheavenitself, nowdto appear in the presence of God for us; 25nor was it that He would offerHimselfoften, as athe highpriestentersbthe holyplacescyear by year with blood that is not his own. 26Otherwise, He would have needed to sufferoftensinceathe foundation of the world; but nowbonce at cthe consummation of the ages He has been dmanifested to putawaysin1,eby the sacrifice of Himself. 27And inasmuch as ait is 1appointed for men to dieonce and afterthisbcomesjudgment, 28soChristalso, having been aofferedonce to bbear the sins of many, will appearca secondtime for dsalvationewithoutreference tosin, to those who feagerlyawait Him.
