6Now Jericho was tightlyshut because of the sons of Israel; noonewentout, and noonecamein. 2And Yahwehsaid to Joshua, “See, I have givenJericho into your hand, with aits kingand the valiantwarriors. 3“And you shall marcharound the city, all the men of warcircling the city once. You shall doso for sixdays. 4“Also sevenpriests shall carrysevenatrumpets of rams’hornsbefore the ark; then on the seventhday you shall marcharound the cityseventimes, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. 5“And it will be that when they makealongblast with the ram’shorn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a greatshout; and the wall of the city will falldown1beneath itself, and the people will goupeveryman2straightahead.”
6So Joshua the son of Nuncalled the priests and said to them, “Carry the ark of the covenant, and let sevenpriestscarryseventrumpets of rams’hornsbefore the ark of Yahweh.” 7Then 1he said to the people, “Goforward, and marcharound the city, and let the armed men goonbefore the ark of Yahweh.” 8And so it happened that, when Joshua had spoken to the people, the sevenpriestscarrying the seventrumpets of rams’hornsbeforeYahwehpassed on forward and blew the trumpets; and the ark of the covenant of Yahwehcameafter them. 9And the armed men wentbefore the priests who blew the trumpets, and athe rearguardcameafter the ark, while they continued to blow the trumpets. 10But Joshuacommanded the people, saying, “You shall not shoutnor let your voice be heardnor let a wordproceedout of your mouth, until the day I tell you, ‘Shout!’ Then you shall shout!” 11So he had the ark of Yahweh1takenaround the city, circlingit once; then they came into the camp and spentthenight in the camp.
12Then Joshuaroseearly in the morning, and the priestscarried the ark of Yahweh. 13aAnd the sevenpriestscarrying the seventrumpets of rams’hornsbefore the ark of Yahwehwent on continually and blew the trumpets; and the armed men wentbefore them, and bthe rearguardcameafter the ark of Yahweh, and they continued to blow the trumpets. 14Thus the secondday they marchedaround the city once and returned to the camp; they didso for sixdays.
15Then it happened that on the seventhday they roseearly at the 1breaking of dawn and marchedaround the city in the samemannerseventimes; only on that day they marchedaround the cityseventimes. 16Now it happened that on the seventhtime, the priestsblew the trumpets, and Joshuasaid to the people, “aShout! For Yahweh has given you the city. 17“And the city shall be adevotedtodestruction, it and all that is in it belongs to Yahweh; onlyRahab the harlot1and allwho are with her in the house shall livebecause she hid the messengerswhom we sent. 18“But as for you, onlykeep yourselves from the thingsdevoted to destruction, lestas you are devotingthem to destruction, you also atakesome of the thingsdevoted to destruction and make the camp of Israeldevoted to destruction and bringtroubleon it. 19“aBut all the silver and gold and articles of bronze and iron are holy to Yahweh; they shall go into the treasury of Yahweh.” 20So the peopleshouted, and 1the priestsblew the trumpets; and when the peopleheard the sound of the trumpet, the peopleshouted with a greatshout, and the awallfelldown2beneath itself, so that the peoplewentup into the city, everymanstraight3ahead, and they took the city. 21aAnd they devoted to destructioneverything in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox and sheep and donkey, with the edge of the sword.
22Now to the twomen who had spiedout the land, Joshuasaid, “aGo into the harlot’s house and bring the woman and all she has out of there, as you have sworn to her.” 23So the youngmen who were spieswentin and abroughtoutRahab and her father and her mother and her brothers and all she had; they also broughtoutall her relatives and placed them outside the camp of Israel. 24aBut they burned the city with fire, and all that was in it. Only the silver and gold, and articles of bronze and iron, they put into the treasury of the 1house of Yahweh. 25However, aRahab the harlot and her father’shousehold and all she had, Joshuapreservedalive; and she has lived in the midst of Israel to thisday, for bshe hid the messengerswhomJoshuasent to spyoutJericho.
26Then Joshua made them swearan oath at that time, saying, “aCursedbeforeYahweh is the manwhorisesup and buildsthiscityJericho; with the loss of his firstborn he shall lay its foundation, and with the loss of his youngestson he shall set up its gates.” 27So aYahweh was with Joshua, and the breport about him was in all the land.
Joshua 7
Israel Struck Down at Ai
7aBut the sons of Israelacted unfaithfully in regard to the thingsdevoted to destruction. Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, tooksome of the devotedthings; therefore the anger of Yahwehburned against the sons of Israel.
2Now Joshuasentmen from Jericho to Ai, which is nearaBeth-aven, east of Bethel, and said to them, “1Goup and spyout the land.” So the menwentup and spiedoutAi. 3Then they returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not have all the peoplegoup; only about two orthreethousandmen need goup to strikedownAi; do not have all the peopletoil up there, for they are few.” 4So about threethousandmen from the peoplewentupthere, but athey fled1from the men of Ai. 5And the men of Aistruckdown about thirty-six of their men and pursued them 1from the gate as far as Shebarim and struck them down on the descent, so the ahearts of the peoplemelted and became as water.
6Then Joshuaatore his clothes and fell to the earth on his facebefore the ark of Yahwehuntil the evening, both he and the elders of Israel; and bthey putdust on their heads. 7Joshuasaid, “Alas, O LordYahweh, why did You everbringthispeopleover the Jordan, only to give us into the hand of the Amorites, to make us perish? Ifonly we had beenwilling1to livebeyond the Jordan! 8“OLord, what can I saysinceIsrael has turnedtheir1backbefore their enemies? 9“aAnd the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and they will surround us and cutoff our name from the earth. And what will You do for Your greatname?”
10So Yahwehsaid to Joshua, “Riseup! Why is it that you have fallen on your face? 11“Israel has sinned, and athey have alsotrespassed against My covenantwhich I commanded them. And they have eventakensome of the thingsdevoted to destruction and have bothstolen and dealtfalsely. Moreover, they have alsoputthem among their own things. 12“Therefore the asons of Israel cannot risebefore their enemies; they turntheir1backsbefore their enemies, for they have becomedevoted to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy the thingsdevoted to destruction from your midst. 13“Riseup! aSet the peopleapartasholy and say, ‘Set yourselves apartasholy for tomorrow, for thusYahweh, the God of Israel, has said, “bThere are thingsdevoted to destruction in your midst, O Israel. You cannot risebefore your enemiesuntil you have removed the thingsdevoted to destruction from your midst.” 14‘In the morning then you shall comenear by your tribes. And it will be that the tribewhichaYahwehtakesby lot shall comenear by families, and the familywhichYahwehtakes shall comenear by households, and the householdwhichYahwehtakes shall comenearman by man. 15‘aAnd it will be that the one who is taken with the thingsdevoted to destruction shall be burned with fire, he and all that belongs to him, because he has trespassed against the covenant of Yahweh, and because he bhas committed a disgracefulthing in Israel.’”
The Sin of Achan
16So Joshuaaroseearly in the morning and broughtIsraelnear by 1tribes, and the tribe of Judah was taken. 17And he brought the family of Judahnear, and he took the family of the Zerahites; and he brought the family of the Zerahitesnearman by man, and Zabdi was taken. 18And he brought his householdnearman by man; and aAchan, son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, was taken. 19Then Joshuasaid to Achan, “My son, I implore you, agiveglory to Yahweh, the God of Israel, and givepraise to Him; and declare to me nowwhat you have done. Do not hide it from me.” 20So AchanansweredJoshua and said, “Truly, I have sinned against Yahweh, the God of Israel, and 1this is what I did: 21I saw among the spoil a beautifulmantle from Shinar and two hundred1shekels of silver and a bar of goldfiftyshekels in weight; then I 2,acoveted them and took them; and behold, they are concealed in the earthinside my tent with the silverunderneath it.”
22So Joshuasentmessengers, and they ran to the tent; and behold, it was concealed in his tent with the silverunderneath it. 23And they took them from inside the tent and brought them to Joshua and to all the sons of Israel, and they poured them outbeforeYahweh. 24Then Joshua and allIsrael with him, tookAchan the son of Zerah, the silver, the mantle, the bar of gold, his sons, his daughters, his 1oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that belonged to him; and they brought them up to athe valley of 2Achor. 25And Joshuasaid, “Why have you atroubled us? Yahweh will trouble you thisday.” And allIsraelstoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire1after they had stoned them with stones. 26Then they raisedover him a greatheap of stones that stands to thisday, and Yahwehturned from His burninganger. Therefore the name of that place has been calledathe valley of 1Achor to thisday.
Joshua 8
Ai Given to Israel
8Now Yahwehsaid to Joshua, “aDo not fear or be dismayed. Takeall the people of war with you and arise, goup to Ai; see, bI have given into your hand the king of Ai, his people, his city, and his land. 2“So you shall do to Ai and its kingjust as you did to Jericho and its king; you shall atakeonly its spoil and its cattle as plunder for yourselves. 1Set an ambush for the city behind it.”
3So Joshuarose with all the people of war to goup to Ai; and Joshuachose 30,000 men, valiantwarriors, and sent them out at night. 4And he commanded them, saying, “See, you are agoing to ambush the city from behind1it. Do not goveryfar from the city, but all of you be ready. 5“Then I and all the peoplewho are with me will comenear the city. And it will be that when they comeout to meet us as at the first, awe will fleebefore them. 6“And they will comeoutafter us until we have drawn them away from the city, for they will say, ‘They are fleeingbefore us as at the first.’ So we will fleebefore them. 7“And you shall rise from yourambush and takepossession of the city, for Yahweh your God will give it into your hand. 8“Then it will be that when you have seized the city, that you shall set the city on fire. You shall doitaaccording to the word of Yahweh. See, I have commanded you.” 9So Joshuasent them away, and they went to the place of ambush and remainedbetweenBethel and Ai, on the westside of Ai; but Joshuaspent that nightamong the people.
10Now Joshuaaroseearly in the morning and mustered the people, and he wentup with the elders of Israelbefore the people to Ai. 11Then all the people of warwhowere with him wentup and drewnear and arrived in front of the city and camped on the northside of Ai. Now there was a valleybetween him and Ai. 12And he took about 5,000 men and set them inambushbetweenaBethel and Ai, on the westside of the 1city. 13So they set the people, all the army that was on the northside of the city, and its rearguard on the westside of the city, and Joshuawent that night into the midst of the valley. 14Now it happened that when the king of Aisawit, the men of the cityhurried and roseupearly and wentout to meetIsrael in battle, he and all his people at the appointedplacebefore the desertplain. But he did not know that there was an ambush against him behind the city. 15And Joshua and allIsraelpretendedtobebeatenbefore them and fledaby the way of the wilderness. 16And all the peoplewho were in the city were calledtogether to pursue them, and they pursuedJoshua and awere drawnaway from the city. 17So not a manremained in Ai or Bethelwho had not goneoutafterIsrael, and they forsook the city, leaving itopen, and pursuedIsrael.
18Then Yahwehsaid to Joshua, “aStretchout the javelin that is in your handtowardAi, for I will give it into your hand.” So Joshuastretchedout the javelin that was in his handtoward the city. 19Then the men inambushrosequickly from their place, and when he had stretchedout his hand, they ran and entered the city and captured it, and they quicklyset the city on fire. 20Then the men of Aiturned1back and looked, and behold, the smoke of the cityascended to the sky, and they hadnoplace to fleethisway or that, for the people who had been fleeing to the wildernessturnedagainst the pursuers. 21But Joshua and allIsraelsaw that the men inambush had captured the city and that the smoke of the cityascended. So they turnedback and struck down the men of Ai. 221And the otherscameout from the city to meet them, so that they were trapped in the midst of Israel, 2some on thisside and some on that side; and they struck them downuntil3there was ano one remaining for him whosurvived or escaped. 23But they seized the king of Aialive and brought him to Joshua.
24Now it happened that when Israel had finishedkillingall the inhabitants of Ai in the field in the wildernesswhere they pursued them, and all of them fell by the edge of the sworduntil they were completelydestroyed, then allIsraelturnedback to Ai and struck it with the edge of the sword. 25aSo all who fell that day, bothmen and women, were 12,000—all the 1people of Ai. 26For Joshuaadid not withdraw his hand with which he stretchedout the javelinuntil he had devoted to destructionall the inhabitants of Ai. 27aIsraeltookonly the cattle and the spoil of that city as plunder for themselves, according to the word of Yahwehwhich He had commandedJoshua. 28So JoshuaburnedAi and made it aa heapforever, a desolationuntilthisday. 29aAnd he hanged the king of Ai on a treeuntilevening; and at sunset Joshuagave a command, and they took his bodydown from the tree and threw it at the entrance of the citygate and raisedover it a greatheap of stonesthat stands to thisday.
30ThenJoshuabuilt an altar to Yahweh, the God of Israel, on aMountEbal, 31just as Moses the servant of Yahweh had commanded the sons of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, aan altar of uncutstones on whichno man had wielded an irontool; and they offeredburntofferings on it to Yahweh and sacrificedpeaceofferings. 32And he awrotethere on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which1he had written, in the presence of the sons of Israel. 33aAnd allIsrael with their elders and officers and their judges were standing on both sides of the arkbefore the Leviticalpriests who carried the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, the sojourner as well as the native. Half of them stood in front of bMountGerizim and half of them in front of MountEbal, just as Moses the servant of Yahweh had given a command at first to bless the people of Israel. 34Then afterward he readall the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in athe book of the law. 35There was not a word of all that Moses had commandedwhichJoshua did not readbeforeall the assembly of Israelawith the women and the littleones and the sojourners who were 1goingamong them.
