The Kings of the East Struck Down

12Now these are the ^akings of the land whom the sons of Israel struck down, and whose land they possessed beyond the Jordan to the east toward the sunrise, from the valley of the Arnon as far as Mount Hermon, and all the Arabah to the east: ²Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon and ruled ^afrom Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, both the middle of the valley and half of Gilead, even as far as the brook Jabbok, the border of the sons of Ammon; ³and the ^aArabah as far as the Sea of ¹Chinneroth toward the east, and as far as the sea of the Arabah, even the Salt Sea, eastward ²toward ^bBeth-jeshimoth, and on the south, ³at the foot of the slopes of Pisgah; ⁴and the territory of Og king of Bashan, one of ^athe remnant of the Rephaim, who lived at ^bAshtaroth and at Edrei ⁵and ruled over Mount Hermon and ^aSalecah and all Bashan, as far as ^bthe border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and half of Gilead, as far as the border of Sihon king of Heshbon. ⁶Moses the servant of Yahweh and the sons of Israel struck them down; and ^aMoses the servant of Yahweh gave it to the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh as a possession.

The Kings of the West Struck Down

⁷Now these are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the sons of Israel struck down beyond the Jordan toward the west, from Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon even as far as ^aMount Halak, which rises toward Seir; and Joshua gave it to the tribes of Israel as a possession according to their divisions, ⁸in ^athe hill country and in the ¹Shephelah and in the Arabah and on the slopes and in the wilderness and in the ²Negev; the Hittite, the Amorite and the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite:

⁹the ^aking of Jericho, one; the ^bking of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one; ¹⁰the ^aking of Jerusalem, one; the king of Hebron, one; ¹¹the king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one; ¹²the king of Eglon, one; the king of Gezer, one; ¹³the king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one; ¹⁴the king of Hormah, one; the king of ^aArad, one; ¹⁵the king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one; ¹⁶the king of Makkedah, one; the king of Bethel, one; ¹⁷the king of Tappuah, one; the ^aking of Hepher, one; ¹⁸the king of ^aAphek, one; the king of Lasharon, one; ¹⁹the king of Madon, one; the king of Hazor, one; ²⁰the king of Shimron-meron, one; the king of Achshaph, one; ²¹the king of Taanach, one; the king of Megiddo, one; ²²the king of ^aKedesh, one; the king of Jokneam in Carmel, one; ²³the king of Dor in the ¹heights of Dor, one; the king of ^aGoiim in Gilgal, one; ²⁴the king of Tirzah, one: ^ain all, thirty-one kings.

Land That Remains to Be Possessed

13Now ^aJoshua was old, advanced in years, and Yahweh said to him, “You are old, advanced in years, and very much of the land remains to be possessed. ²“This is the land that remains: all the regions of the Philistines and all those of the ^aGeshurites; ³from the Shihor which is ¹east of Egypt, even as far as the border of Ekron to the north (it is counted as Canaanite); the ^afive lords of the Philistines: the Gazite, the Ashdodite, the Ashkelonite, the Gittite, the Ekronite; and the Avvite ⁴¹to the south, all the land of the Canaanite, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, as far as ^aAphek, to the border of the ^bAmorite; ⁵and the land of the ^aGebalite, and all of Lebanon, to the east toward the sunrise, ^bfrom Baal-gad below Mount Hermon as far as ¹Lebo-hamath. ⁶“All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon as far as ^aMisrephoth-maim, all the Sidonians, I will dispossess them from before the sons of Israel; ^bonly allot it to Israel for an inheritance as I have commanded you. ⁷“So now, apportion this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.”

The Inheritance East of the Jordan

⁸With ¹the other half-tribe, the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance which Moses gave them ^abeyond the Jordan to the east, just as Moses the servant of Yahweh gave to them; ⁹from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, with the city which is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain of Medeba, as far as Dibon; ¹⁰and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the border of the sons of Ammon; ¹¹and ^aGilead, and the ¹territory of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salecah; ¹²all the kingdom of ^aOg in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (he alone remained of the remnant of the Rephaim); for Moses ^bstruck them and dispossessed them. ¹³But the sons of Israel did not dispossess the Geshurites or the Maacathites; so Geshur and Maacath live among Israel until this day. ¹⁴^aOnly to the tribe of Levi he did not give an inheritance; the offerings by fire to Yahweh, the God of Israel, are ¹their inheritance, as He spoke to him.

¹⁵So Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the sons of Reuben according to their families. ¹⁶And their ¹territory was ^afrom Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, with the city which is in the middle of the valley and all the plain by Medeba; ¹⁷Heshbon, and all its cities which are on the plain: Dibon and Bamoth-baal and Beth-baal-meon, ¹⁸and ^aJahaz and Kedemoth and Mephaath, ¹⁹and ^aKiriathaim and Sibmah and Zereth-shahar on the hill of the valley, ²⁰and Beth-peor and the slopes of Pisgah and Beth-jeshimoth, ²¹even all the cities of the plain and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses struck with the leaders of Midian, ^aEvi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land. ²²The sons of Israel also killed ^aBalaam the son of Beor, the diviner, with the sword among the rest of their slain. ²³And the border of the sons of Reuben was the ¹Jordan. This was the inheritance of the sons of Reuben according to their families, the cities and their villages.

²⁴Moses also gave an inheritance to the tribe of Gad, to the sons of Gad, according to their families. ²⁵And their territory was ^aJazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the sons of Ammon, as far as Aroer which is before Rabbah; ²⁶and from Heshbon as far as Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim as far as the border of ¹Debir; ²⁷and in the valley, Beth-haram and Beth-nimrah and Succoth and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, with the Jordan ¹as a border, as far as the lower end of the Sea of ²^,^aChinnereth beyond the Jordan to the east. ²⁸This is the inheritance of the sons of Gad according to their families, the cities and their villages.

²⁹Moses also gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh; and it was for the half-tribe of the sons of Manasseh according to their families. ³⁰And their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all of ¹^,^aHavvoth-jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities; ³¹also half of Gilead, with ^aAshtaroth and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh, for half of the sons of Machir according to their families.

³²These are the territories which Moses apportioned for an inheritance in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan at Jericho to the east. ³³But ^ato the tribe of Levi, Moses did not give an inheritance; Yahweh, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, as He had ¹promised to them.

The Inheritance Beyond the Jordan

14Now these are the territories which the sons of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which ^aEleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the heads of the ¹households of the tribes of the sons of Israel apportioned to them for an inheritance, ²by the ^alot of their inheritance, as Yahweh commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes and the half-tribe. ³For ^aMoses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe beyond the Jordan; but ^bhe did not give an inheritance to the Levites among them. ⁴For the sons of Joseph were two tribes, ^aManasseh and Ephraim, and they did not give a portion to the Levites in the land, except cities to live in, with their pasture lands for their livestock and for their property. ⁵Thus the sons of Israel did just ^aas Yahweh had commanded Moses, and they divided the land.

Caleb’s Inheritance

⁶Then the sons of Judah drew near to Joshua in Gilgal, and ^aCaleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know the word which Yahweh spoke to Moses the man of God concerning ¹you and me in Kadesh-barnea. ⁷“I was forty years old when ^aMoses the servant of Yahweh sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought word back to him as it was in my heart. ⁸“Nevertheless, my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people ¹melt with fear; but ^aI followed Yahweh my God fully. ⁹“So Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely ^athe land on which your foot has trodden will be an inheritance to you and to your children forever because you have followed Yahweh my God fully.’ ¹⁰“So now behold, Yahweh has let me live, just as He spoke, these forty-five years, from the time that Yahweh spoke this word to Moses, when Israel walked in the wilderness; so now behold, I am eighty-five years old today. ¹¹“^aI am still as strong today as I was in the day Moses sent me; as my strength was then, so my strength is now, for war and for ^bgoing out and coming in. ¹²“So now, give me this hill country about which Yahweh spoke on that day, for you heard on that day that ^aAnakim were there, with great fortified cities; perhaps Yahweh will be with me, and I will dispossess them as Yahweh has spoken.”

¹³So Joshua ^ablessed him and ^bgave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance. ¹⁴Therefore, Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite until this day because he fully followed Yahweh, the God of Israel. ¹⁵Now the name of Hebron was formerly ¹Kiriath-arba; for Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim. ^aThen the land was quiet from war.

Spiritual Blessings in Christ

1Paul, ^aan apostle of ^bChrist Jesus ¹^,^cby the will of God, To the ²^,^dsaints who are ³at ^eEphesus and ^fwho are faithful in ^gChrist Jesus: ²^aGrace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

³^aBlessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in ^bthe heavenly places in Christ, ⁴just as ^aHe chose us in Him before ^bthe foundation of the world, that we would be ^choly and blameless before ¹Him ^din love, ⁵by ^apredestining us to ^badoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, ^caccording to the good pleasure of His will, ⁶^ato the praise of the glory of His grace, which He graciously bestowed on us in ^bthe Beloved. ⁷^aIn ¹Him we have ^bredemption ^cthrough His blood, the ^dforgiveness of our transgressions, according to ^ethe riches of His grace ⁸which He caused to abound to us in all wisdom and insight, ⁹^amaking known to us the mystery of His will, ^baccording to His good pleasure which He ^cpurposed in Him ¹⁰for an administration of ^athe fullness of the times, that is, ^bthe summing up of all things in Christ, things ¹in the heavens and things on the earth in Him. ¹¹In ¹Him, we also ²^,^ahave been made an inheritance, having been ^bpredestined ^caccording to the purpose of Him who works all things ^daccording to the counsel of His will, ¹²to the end that we who first have hoped in ¹Christ would be ^ato the praise of His glory. ¹³In ¹Him, you also, after listening to ^athe word of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also ²believed, you were ^bsealed in ³Him with ^cthe Holy Spirit of promise, ¹⁴who is ¹^,^agiven as a pledge of ^bour inheritance, unto the ^credemption of ^dGod’s own possession, ^eto the praise of His glory.

¹⁵For this reason I too, ^ahaving heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which exists among you and ¹your love for ^ball the ²saints, ¹⁶^ado not cease giving thanks for you, ^bwhile making mention of you in my prayers: ¹⁷that the ^aGod of our Lord Jesus Christ, ^bthe Father of glory, may give to you the ¹Spirit of ^cwisdom and of ^drevelation in the ²full knowledge of Him, ¹⁸so that you—^athe eyes of your heart having been enlightened—will know what is the ^bhope of His ^ccalling, what are ^dthe riches of the glory of ^eHis inheritance in ^fthe ¹saints, ¹⁹and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe ^aaccording to the working of the ^bmight of His strength, ²⁰which He worked in Christ, by ^araising Him from the dead and ^bseating Him at His right hand in ^cthe heavenly places, ²¹far above ^aall rule and authority and power and dominion, and every ^bname that is named, not only in ^cthis age but also in the one to come. ²²And ^aHe put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as ^bhead over all things to the church, ²³which is His ^abody, the ^bfullness of Him who ^cfills ^dall in all.

By Grace Through Faith

2And you ¹were ^adead ²in your transgressions and sins, ²in which you ^aformerly walked according to the ¹course of ^bthis world, according to ^cthe ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now working in ^dthe sons of disobedience, ³among whom we all also ^aformerly conducted ourselves in ^bthe lusts of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the ¹mind, and were ^cby nature ^dchildren of wrath, ^eeven as the rest. ⁴But God, being ^arich in mercy because of ^bHis great love with which He loved us, ⁵even when we were ^adead ¹in our transgressions, made us alive together ²with Christ—^bby grace you have been saved— ⁶and ^araised us up with Him, and ^bseated us with Him in ^cthe heavenly places in ^dChrist Jesus, ⁷so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing ^ariches of His grace in ^bkindness toward us in Christ Jesus. ⁸For ^aby grace you have been saved ^bthrough faith, and ¹this not of yourselves, it is ^cthe gift of God; ⁹^anot of works, so that ^bno one may boast. ¹⁰For we are His workmanship, ^acreated in ^bChrist Jesus for ^cgood works, which God ^dprepared beforehand so that we would ^ewalk in them.

¹¹Therefore, remember that ^aformerly ^byou—the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called “^cUncircumcision” by the so-called “^dCircumcision,” which is performed in the flesh by human hands— ¹²remember that you were at that time without Christ, ^aalienated from the citizenship of Israel, and strangers to ^bthe covenants of promise, having ^cno hope and ^dwithout God in the world. ¹³But now in ^aChrist Jesus you who ^bformerly were ^cfar off ¹have ^dbeen brought near ^eby the blood of Christ. ¹⁴For He Himself is ^aour peace, ^bwho made both groups one and broke down the dividing wall of the partition ¹⁵¹by ^aabolishing in His flesh the enmity, ^bthe Law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that in Himself He might ^ccreate the two into ^done new man, making ^epeace, ¹⁶and might ^areconcile them both in ^bone body to God through the cross, having in Himself ^cput to death the enmity. ¹⁷And ^aHe came and preached ^bthe good news of peace to you who were ^cfar away, and peace to those who were ^dnear; ¹⁸for through Him we both have ^aour access in ^bone Spirit to ^cthe Father. ¹⁹So then you are no longer ^astrangers and sojourners, but you are ^bfellow citizens with the ¹saints, and are of ^cGod’s household, ²⁰having been ^abuilt on ^bthe foundation of ^cthe apostles and prophets, ^dChrist Jesus Himself being the ^ecorner stone, ²¹^ain whom the whole building, being joined together, is growing into ^ba holy ¹sanctuary in the Lord, ²²in whom you also are being ^abuilt together into a ^bdwelling of God in the Spirit.
