Seek Me That You May Live

5Hear this word which I take up for you as a funeral ^alament, O house of Israel:²She has fallen; she will ^anot rise again—The ^bvirgin Israel.She lies abandoned on her land;There is ^cnone to raise her up.

³For thus says Lord Yahweh, “The city which goes forth one thousand strongWill have one ^ahundred left,And the one which goes forth one hundred strongWill have ^bten left to the house of Israel.”

⁴For thus says Yahweh to the house of Israel, “^aSeek Me ^bthat you may live.

⁵“But do not seek ^aBethel,And do not come to ^bGilgal,Nor cross over to ^cBeersheba;For Gilgal will certainly go into ¹exile,And Bethel will become ²evil.⁶“^aSeek Yahweh that you may live,Lest He come mightily like a ^bfire, ¹O house of Joseph,And it will consume with none to quench it for Bethel,⁷For those who overturn ^ajustice into wormwoodAnd put righteousness down to the earth.”⁸He who made the ^aPleiades and OrionAnd ^boverturns the shadow of death into morning,¹Who also ^cdarkens day into night,Who ^dcalls for the waters of the seaAnd pours them out on the surface of the earth,^eYahweh is His name.⁹It is He who ^aflashes forth with devastation upon the strongSo that ^bdevastation comes upon the fortification.¹⁰They hate him who ^areproves in the ¹gate,And they ^babhor him who speaks with integrity.¹¹Therefore because you ¹impose heavy rent on the poorAnd take a tribute of grain from them,Though you have built ^ahouses of cut stone,Yet you will not live in them;You have planted desirable vineyards, yet you will ^bnot drink their wine.¹²For I know your transgressions are many and your sins are mighty,You who ^adistress the righteous and take bribesAnd ¹turn aside the needy in the ²gate.¹³Therefore at ¹such a time the one with insight ^akeeps silent, for it is an evil time.¹⁴Seek good and not evil, in order that you may live;And thus may Yahweh God of hosts be with you,^aJust as you have said!¹⁵^aHate evil, love good,And set justice at the ¹gate!Perhaps Yahweh God of hosts^bMay be gracious to the ^cremnant of Joseph.

¹⁶Therefore thus says Yahweh God of hosts, the Lord, “There is ^awailing in all the plazas,And in all the streets they say, ‘Alas! Alas!’They also call the ^bfarmer to mourningAnd ¹^,^cprofessional weepers to wailing.

¹⁷“And in all the ^avineyards there is wailingBecause I will pass through the midst of you,” says Yahweh.¹⁸Woe, you who are longing for the ^aday of Yahweh,For what purpose will the day of Yahweh be to you?It will be ^bdarkness and not light;¹⁹As when a man ^aflees from a lionAnd a bear meets him;¹Or he goes home, leans his hand against the wall,And a snake bites him.²⁰Will not the day of Yahweh be ^adarkness instead of light,Even thick darkness with no brightness in it?²¹“I hate, I ^areject your feasts,Nor do I ¹^,^bdelight in your solemn assemblies.²²“Even though you ^aoffer up to Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings,I will not accept them;And I will not even look at the ^bpeace offerings of your fatlings.²³“Remove from Me the tumult of your songs;I will not even listen to the melody of your harps.²⁴“But let ^ajustice roll down like watersAnd righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

²⁵“¹^,^aDid you present Me with sacrifices and grain offerings in the wilderness for forty years, O house of Israel? ²⁶“^aYou also carried along ¹Sikkuth your king and ²Kiyyun, your images, ³the star of your gods which you made for yourselves. ²⁷“Therefore, I will make you go into exile beyond Damascus,” says Yahweh, whose name is the God of hosts.

Woe to Those at Ease in Zion

6^aWoe to those who are at ease in ZionAnd to those who feel secure in the mountain of Samaria,The ^bdistinguished men of the first of the nations,To whom the house of Israel comes.²Pass on over to ^aCalneh and look,And go from there to ^bHamath the great,Then go down to ^cGath of the Philistines.Are ¹they better than these kingdoms,Or are their borders greater than your borders?³Do you ^aput off the day of calamity,And would you ^bcause the seat of violence to approach?⁴Those who lie down on beds of ivoryAnd sprawl on their ^acouchesAnd ^beat lambs from the flockAnd calves from the midst of the stall,⁵Who improvise to the ¹sound of the harp,And like David have ²composed ^asongs for themselves,⁶Who ^adrink wine from ¹sacrificial bowlsWhile they anoint themselves with the first pick of the oils,Yet they have not ^bgrieved over the destruction of Joseph.⁷Therefore, they will now ^ago into exile among the first of the exiles,And the ^bsprawlers’ ¹banqueting will turn aside.⁸Lord Yahweh has ^asworn by Himself, Yahweh God of hosts has declared:“I ^babhor the lofty pride of JacobAnd hate his ^ccitadels;Therefore I will ^ddeliver up the city as well as its fullness.”

⁹And it will be, if ^aten men are left in one house, they will die. ¹⁰Then one’s ¹uncle, or the one who ²^,^aburns his bones, will lift him up to bring out his bones from the house, and he will say to the one who is in the innermost part of the house, “Is anyone else with you?” And that one will say, “No one.” Then he will ³answer, “^bKeep quiet. For ⁴the name of Yahweh is ^cnot to be mentioned.” ¹¹For behold, Yahweh is going to ^acommand and will strike the ^bgreat house to pieces and the small house to fragments.

¹²Do horses run on rocks?Or does one plow ¹them with oxen?Yet you have overturned ^ajustice into gallAnd the fruit of righteousness into ²wormwood,¹³You who are glad in ¹^,^aLo-debar²And say, “Have we not ^bby our own strength taken ³Karnaim for ourselves?”¹⁴“For behold, ^aI am going to raise up a nation against you,O house of Israel,” declares Yahweh God of hosts,“And they will press down on you from ¹^,^bLebo-hamathTo the ^cbrook of the Arabah.”

Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus’ Daughter

²¹^aAnd when Jesus had crossed over again in ^bthe boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He ¹stayed ^cby the seashore. ²²^aAnd one of ^bthe synagogue ¹officials named Jairus *came up, and on seeing Him, *fell at His feet ²³and *pleaded with Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death; please come, that by coming, ^aYou may lay Your hands on her, so that she will ¹be saved and live.” ²⁴And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him.

²⁵And a woman—who had a hemorrhage for twelve years ²⁶and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse— ²⁷after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His garment. ²⁸For she was saying, “If I just touch His garments, I will ¹be saved from this.” ²⁹And immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she knew within her body that she had been healed of her ^aaffliction. ³⁰And immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that ^athe power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and was saying, “Who touched My garments?” ³¹And His disciples were saying to Him, “You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’” ³²And He was looking around to see the woman who had done this. ³³But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. ³⁴And He said to her, “Daughter, ^ayour faith has ¹saved you; ^bgo in peace and be healed of your ^caffliction.”

³⁵While He was still speaking, they *came from the house of the ^asynagogue official, saying, “Your daughter has died; why trouble the Teacher anymore?” ³⁶But Jesus, overhearing what had been spoken, *said to the ^asynagogue official, “^bDo not be afraid, only ¹believe.” ³⁷And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except ^aPeter and James and John the brother of James. ³⁸And they *came to the house of the ^asynagogue official; and He *saw a commotion, and people loudly crying and wailing. ³⁹And entering in, He *said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and crying? The child has not died, but is asleep.” ⁴⁰And they began laughing at Him. But putting them all out, He *took along the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and *entered the room where the child was. ⁴¹And taking the child by the hand, He *said to her, “Talitha kum!” (which translated means, “Little girl, ^aI say to you, arise!”). ⁴²And immediately the little girl stood up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded. ⁴³And He ^agave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and He said that some food should be given to her to eat.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

6^aAnd ¹Jesus went out from there and *came into ²^,^bHis hometown; and His disciples *followed Him. ²And when the Sabbath came, He began ^ato teach in the synagogue; and ^bmany listeners were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to this man, and such ¹miracles as these performed by His hands? ³“Is this man not ^athe carpenter, ^bthe son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not ^cHis sisters here with us?” And they were taking ^doffense at Him. ⁴And Jesus was saying to them, “^aA prophet is not without honor except in ¹^,^bhis hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household.” ⁵And He could do no ¹miracle there except that He ^alaid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. ⁶And He was marveling at their unbelief. ^aAnd He was going around the villages teaching.

The Twelve Sent Out

⁷^aAnd ^bHe *summoned the twelve and began to send them out ^cin pairs, and was giving them authority over the unclean spirits; ⁸^aand He instructed them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a staff only—no bread, no ¹bag, no money in their belt— ⁹but ¹to wear sandals; and He added, “Do not put on two ²tunics.” ¹⁰And He was saying to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you ¹leave town. ¹¹“And any place that does not receive you or listen to you, as you go out from there, ^ashake the dust ¹off the soles of your feet for a testimony against them.” ¹²^aAnd they went out and ¹preached that men should repent. ¹³And they were casting out many demons and ^awere anointing with oil many sick people and healing them.

The Death of John the Baptist

¹⁴^aAnd King Herod heard it, for His name had become well known; and people were saying, “^bJohn the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in Him.” ¹⁵But others were saying, “He is ^aElijah.” And others were saying, “He is ^ba prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” ¹⁶But when Herod heard it, he kept saying, “John, whom I beheaded, has risen!”

¹⁷For Herod himself had sent and had John arrested and bound in prison on account of ^aHerodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her. ¹⁸For John had been saying to Herod, “^aIt is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” ¹⁹^aNow Herodias was holding a grudge against him and was wanting to put him to death and was not able; ²⁰for ^aHerod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he was keeping him safe. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed; ¹but he ²used to enjoy listening to him. ²¹And a strategic day came when Herod on his birthday ^agave a banquet for his great men and ¹military commanders and the leading men ^bof Galilee; ²²and when the daughter of ^aHerodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and ¹his dinner guests; and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you.” ²³And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you; up to ^ahalf of my kingdom.” ²⁴And she went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” ²⁵And immediately she came in a hurry to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” ²⁶And although the king was very sorry, yet because of his oaths and because of ¹his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. ²⁷And immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded him to bring back his head. And he went and beheaded him in the prison, ²⁸and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. ²⁹And when his disciples heard this, they came and took away his body and laid it in a tomb.

³⁰^aAnd the ^bapostles *gathered together with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught. ³¹And He *said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” (For there were many people coming and going, and ^athey did not even have time to eat.) ³²^aAnd they went away in ^bthe boat to a desolate place by themselves.

Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

³³And the people saw them going, and many recognized them and ran there together on foot from all the cities, and got there ahead of them. ³⁴And when Jesus went ¹ashore, He ^asaw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because ^bthey were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things. ³⁵And when it was already quite late, His disciples came to Him and began saying, “¹This place is desolate and it is already quite late; ³⁶send them away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves ¹something to eat.” ³⁷But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat!” ^aAnd they *said to Him, “Shall we go and spend two hundred ¹^,^bdenarii on bread and give them something to eat?” ³⁸And He *said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go look!” And when they found out, they *said, “Five, and two fish.” ³⁹And He commanded them all to ¹sit down by ²groups on the green grass. ⁴⁰And they ¹sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties. ⁴¹And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He ^ablessed the food and broke the loaves. And He kept giving them to the disciples to set before them, and He divided up the two fish among them all. ⁴²And they all ate and were satisfied, ⁴³and they picked up twelve full ^abaskets of the broken pieces, and also of the fish. ⁴⁴And there were ^afive thousand men who ate the loaves.

Jesus Walks on the Sea

⁴⁵^aAnd immediately Jesus made His disciples get into ^bthe boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to ^cBethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away. ⁴⁶And after ^abidding them farewell, He left ^bfor the mountain to pray.

⁴⁷And when it was evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land. ⁴⁸And seeing them ¹straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, at about the ²^,^afourth watch of the night He *came to them, walking on the sea; and He was intending to pass by them. ⁴⁹But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they thought that it was a ghost, and cried out; ⁵⁰for they all saw Him and were ¹terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and *said to them, “^aTake courage; it is I, ^bdo not be afraid.” ⁵¹Then He got into ^athe boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were ¹utterly amazed, ⁵²for ^athey ¹had not gained any insight about the loaves, but their ²heart ^bwas hardened.

Many Healed at Gennesaret

⁵³^aAnd when they had crossed over they came to land at Gennesaret, and moored to the shore. ⁵⁴And when they got out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him, ⁵⁵and ran about that whole region and began to carry here and there on their mats those who were sick, to ¹the place they heard He was. ⁵⁶And wherever He was entering villages, or cities, or countryside, they were laying the sick in the marketplaces, and pleading with Him that they might just ^atouch ^bthe fringe of His garment; and as many as touched it were being ¹saved from their sicknesses.

Yahweh Is My Light and My Salvation

Of David.

Yahweh is my ^alight and my ^bsalvation;Whom shall I fear?Yahweh is the ¹^,^cstrong defense of my life;^dWhom shall I dread?²When evildoers came upon me to ^adevour my flesh,My adversaries and my enemies, they ^bstumbled and fell.³Though a ^ahost encamp against me,My heart will not fear;Though war arise against me,In this I ^btrust.⁴^aOne thing I have asked from Yahweh, that I shall seek:That I may ^bdwell in the house of Yahweh all the days of my life,To behold ^cthe ¹beauty of YahwehAnd to ^dinquire in His temple.⁵For in the ^aday of calamity He will ^bconceal me in His shelter;In the secret place of His tent He will ^chide me;He will ^dlift me up on a rock.⁶And now ^amy head will be lifted up above my enemies around me,And I will offer in His tent ^bsacrifices with loud shouts of joy;I will ^csing, and I will sing praises to Yahweh.⁷^aHear, O Yahweh, when I call with my voice,And be gracious to me and ^banswer me.⁸On Your behalf my heart says, “^aSeek My face,”“Your face, O Yahweh, ^bI shall seek.”⁹^aDo not hide Your face from me,Do not turn Your slave away in ^banger;You have been ^cmy help;^dDo not abandon me and do not ^eforsake me,O God of my salvation!¹⁰¹For my father and ^amy mother have forsaken me,But ^bYahweh will take me up.¹¹^aInstruct me in Your way, O Yahweh,And lead me in a ^blevel pathBecause of ¹my foes.¹²Do not give me over to the ¹^,^adesire of my adversaries,For ^bfalse witnesses have risen against me,And such as ^cbreathe out violence.¹³¹I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the ^agoodness of YahwehIn the ^bland of the living.¹⁴^aHope in Yahweh;Be ^bstrong and let your heart take courage;Hope in Yahweh.
