16Then athe menroseup from there and lookeddown toward Sodom; and Abraham was walking with them to send them off. 17aNow Yahwehsaid, “Shall I conceal from Abrahambwhat I am about to do, 18since Abraham will surelybecome a great and 1mightynation, and in him aall the nations of the earth will be blessed? 19“For I have 1,aknown him, so that he may bcommand his children and his householdafter him, cthat they keep the way of Yahweh to dorighteousness and justice, so that Yahweh may bring upon Abrahamdwhat He has spokenabout him.” 20So Yahwehsaid, “aThe outcry of Sodom and Gomorrahisindeedgreat, and their sinisexceedinglygrave. 21“I will agodownnow and see whether they have doneentirely according to its outcry, which has come to Me; and if not, I will know.”
22Then athe menturnedaway from there and went toward Sodom, while Abraham was stillstandingbeforebYahweh. 23Then Abrahamcamenear and said, “aWill You indeedsweepaway the righteous with the wicked? 24“Supposetherearefiftyrighteouswithin the city; will You indeedsweepitaway and not 1spare the place for the sake of the fiftyrighteouswho are in it? 25“Far be it from You to do1such a thing, to put to death the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Shall not athe Judge of all the earthdojustice?” 26So Yahwehsaid, “aIf I find in Sodomfiftyrighteouswithin the city, then I will 1spare the wholeplace on their account.” 27And Abrahamanswered and said, “Nowbehold, I have 1ventured to speak to the Lord, although I am butadust and ashes. 28“Suppose the fiftyrighteous are lackingfive, will You destroy the wholecity because of five?” And He said, “I will not destroyitif I find forty-five there.” 29Then he spoke to Him yetagain and said, “Supposeforty are foundthere?” And He said, “I will not doit on account of the forty.” 30Then he said, “Ohmay the Lord not beangry, and I shall speak; supposethirty are foundthere?” And He said, “I will not doitif I findthirtythere.” 31And he said, “Nowbehold, I have 1ventured to speak to the Lord; supposetwenty are foundthere?” And He said, “I will not destroyit on account of the twenty.” 32Then he said, “aOhmay the Lord not beangry, and I shall speakonlythisonce; supposeten are foundthere?” And He said, “I will not destroyit on account of the ten.” 33And as soon as He had finishedspeaking to Abraham, aYahwehdeparted, and Abrahamreturned to his place.
Genesis 19
Yahweh Destroys Sodom and Gomorrah
19Then the atwoangelscame to Sodom in the evening as Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. bLotsawthem and rose to meet them and 1boweddownwith his2face to the ground. 2And he said, “Nowbehold, my lords, pleaseturnaside into your servant’shouse, and spendthenight, and wash your feet; then you may riseearly and go on your way.” They said however, “No, but we shall spendthenight in the square.” 3Yet he pressed them strongly, so they turnedaside to him and entered his house; aand he made a feast for them and bakedunleavenedbread, and they ate. 4Before they laydown, athe men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, fromyoung to old, all the people1from every quarter; 5and they called to Lot and said to him, “aWhere are the menwhocame to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may 1know them.” 6But Lotwentout to them at the doorway and shut the doorbehind him, 7and said, “Please, my brothers, do not actwickedly. 8“Nowbehold, aI have twodaughterswho have not known a man; please let me bring them out to you, and do to them what is good in your eyes; onlydo nothing to thesemen, inasmuch as they have come under the 1shelter of my roof.” 9But they said, “Stepaside.” Furthermore, they said, “This onecame to sojourn, and alreadyahe is persistentlyactinglikeajudge; now we will treat you more wickedlythan them.” So they pressedhard against 1Lot and steppedup to break the door. 10But athe menreachedout their 1hands and broughtLot into the house2with them and shut the door. 11aAnd they 1struck the menwho were at the doorway of the house with blindness, fromsmall to great, so that they weariedthemselves trying to find the doorway.
12Then the twomensaid to Lot, “Whomelse have you here? A son-in-law, and your sons, and your daughters, and everyone you have in the city, bringthemout of the place; 13for we are about to destroythisplacebecauseatheir outcry has becomegreatbeforeYahweh, so bYahweh has sent us to destroy it.” 14And Lotwentout and spoke to his sons-in-law, who 1were to marry his daughters, and said, “Get up, agetout of thisplace, for Yahweh will destroy the city.” bBut he appeared to his sons-in-law2to be jesting.
15Now at the 1breaking of dawn, the angelsurgedLot, saying, “Get up, take your wife and your twodaughters who arehere, lest you be sweptaway in the 2punishment of the city.” 16But he hesitated. So the menaseized his hand and the hand of his wife and the 1hands of his twodaughters, for bthe compassion of Yahwehwas upon him; and they brought him out and put him outside the city. 17Now it happened, as they brought them outside, 1one said, “aEscape for your life! bDo not lookbehind you, and do not stay2anywhere in the cvalley; escape to dthe 3mountains, lest you be sweptaway.” 18But Lotsaid to them, “Ohno, my lords! 19“Nowbehold, your servant has foundfavor in your sight, and you have magnified your lovingkindness, which you have shown me by preserving my life; but I cannot escape to the 1mountains, lestcalamityovertake me and I die; 20nowbehold, thistown is nearenough to flee to, and it is small. Please, let me escapethere (is it not small?) 1that my life may be preserved.” 21And he said to him, “Behold, I grant you this1requestalso, that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken. 22“Hurry, escapethere, for I cannot doanythinguntil you arrivethere.” Therefore the name of the city was called1,aZoar.
23The sun had risenover the earth when Lotcame to Zoar. 24And Yahweharained on Sodom and Gomorrahbrimstone and fire from Yahweh out of heaven, 25and aHe overthrewthosecities, and all the 1valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and whatgrew on the ground. 26Then his wife, from behind him, alookedback, and she became a pillar of salt.
27Now Abrahamaroseearly in the morningand went to athe place where he had stoodbeforeYahweh; 28and he lookeddown toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the 1valley, and he saw, and behold, athe smoke of the landwentup like the smoke of a 2furnace.
29Thus it happened, when Goddestroyed the cities of the 1valley, that aGodrememberedAbraham and bsentLotout of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in whichLotlived.
Lot and His Daughters
30And Lotwentup from Zoar and 1,astayed in the 2mountains, and his twodaughters with him; for he wasafraid to 3stay in Zoar; and he 4stayed in a cave, he and his twodaughters. 31Then the firstbornsaid to the younger, “Our fatherisold, and thereisnot a man1on earth to acomein to us after the manner of the earth. 32“Come, alet us make our fatherdrinkwine, and let us lie with him that we may preserveourseedthrough our father.” 33So they made their fatherdrinkwine that night, and the firstbornwentin and lay with her father; and he did not know when she laydown or when she arose. 34Now it happened on the followingday, that the firstbornsaid to the younger, “Behold, I laylastnight with my father; let us make him drinkwinetonightalso; and you goin and lie with him, that we may preserveourseedthrough our father.” 35So they made their fatherdrinkwine that nightalso, and the youngerarose and lay with him; and he did not know when she laydown or when she arose. 36Thus both the daughters of Lotconceived by their father. 37And the firstbornbore a son and called his nameaMoab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day. 38As for the younger, she alsobore a son and called his nameBen-ammi; he is the father of the 1sons of aAmmon to this day.
