4And seven women will take hold of ^aone man in that day, saying, “We will eat our own bread and wear our own clothes, only let us be called by your name; ^btake away our reproach!”

The Branch of Yahweh Glorified

²In that day the ^aBranch of Yahweh will be beautiful and glorious, and the ^bfruit of the earth will be the pride and the ¹honor of ^cthose of Israel who escape. ³It will be that he who ^aremains in Zion and is left in Jerusalem will be called ^bholy—everyone who is ^cwritten down for life in Jerusalem. ⁴When the Lord has washed away the filth of the ^adaughters of Zion and rinsed away the ^bbloodshed of Jerusalem from her midst, by the ^cspirit of judgment and the ^dspirit of burning, ⁵then Yahweh will create over the whole area of Mount Zion and over her convocation ^aa cloud by day, even smoke, and the brightness of a flaming fire by night; for over all the ^bglory will be a canopy. ⁶And there will be a ^abooth to give shade from the heat by day, and refuge and a hiding place from the storm and the rain.

The Song of the Vineyard

5Let me sing now for my well-belovedA song of my beloved concerning His vineyard.My well-beloved had a ^avineyard on ¹a fertile hill.²He dug it all around, removed its stones,And planted it with ¹the ^achoicest vine.And He built a tower in the middle of itAnd also hewed out a ²wine vat in it;Then He ^bhoped for it to produce good grapes,But it produced only ³worthless ones.³“So now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah,^aPlease judge between Me and My vineyard.⁴“^aWhat more was there to do for My vineyard ¹that I have not done in it?Why, when I hoped for it to produce good grapes did it produce ²worthless ones?⁵“So now let Me tell you what I am going to do to My vineyard:I will ^aremove its hedge, and it will be consumed;I will ^bbreak down its wall, and it will become ^ctrampled ground.⁶“I will ^alay it waste;It will not be pruned or hoed,But briars and thorns will come up.I will also command the clouds to ^brain no rain on it.”⁷For the ^avineyard of Yahweh of hosts is the house of IsraelAnd the men of Judah His delightful plant.Thus He hoped for justice, but behold, ^bbloodshed;For righteousness, but behold, a cry of distress.

Woes to Those Who Call Evil Good

⁸Woe to those who ^aadd house to house and join field to field,Until there is no more room,So that you have to live alone in the midst of the land!⁹In my ears Yahweh of hosts has sworn, “Surely, ^amany houses shall become ^bdesolate,Even great and good ones, without inhabitants.¹⁰“For ^aten ¹acres of vineyard will yield only one ²bath of wine,And a ³^,^bhomer of seed will yield but an ⁴ephah of grain.”¹¹Woe to those who rise early in the morning that they may pursue ^astrong drink,Who stay up late in the evening that wine may inflame them!¹²And their banquets are accompanied by lyre and ^aharp, by tambourine and flute, and by wine;But they ^bdo not look upon the deeds of Yahweh,Nor do they see the work of His hands.¹³Therefore My people go into exile for their ^alack of knowledge;And ¹their ^bhonorable men are famished,And their multitude is parched with thirst.¹⁴Therefore ^aSheol has enlarged its ¹throat and opened its mouth without limit;And ²Jerusalem’s majesty, her multitude, her rumbling, and the exultant within her, descend into it.¹⁵So the common man will be bowed down and the man of importance will be made low,^aThe eyes of the lofty also will be made low.¹⁶But ^aYahweh of hosts will be ^blofty in judgment,And the holy God will show Himself ^choly in righteousness.¹⁷^aThen the lambs will graze as in their pasture,And sojourners will eat in the waste places of the ¹wealthy.¹⁸Woe to those who drag ^ainiquity with the cords of worthlessness,And sin as if with cart ropes,¹⁹^aWho say, “Let Him hurry, let Him hasten His work, that we may see it;And let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nearAnd come to pass, that we may know it!”²⁰Woe to those who ^acall evil good and good evil,Who ¹^,^bsubstitute darkness for light and light for darkness,Who ²substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!²¹Woe to those who are ^awise in their own eyesAnd understanding in their own ¹sight!²²^aWoe to those who are mighty men in drinking wineAnd valiant men in mixing strong drink,²³^aWho ¹declare the wicked righteous for a bribe,And ^bremove the ²righteous standing of the ones who are ³righteous!²⁴Therefore, ^aas a tongue of fire consumes stubbleAnd dry grass collapses into the flame,So their ^broot will become ^clike rot and their blossom ¹blow away as dust;For they have ^drejected the law of Yahweh of hostsAnd the word of the Holy One of Israel they have spurned.²⁵On this account, the ^aanger of Yahweh has burned against His people,And He has stretched out His hand against them and struck them down.And the ^bmountains trembled, and their ^ccorpses ¹lay like refuse in the middle of the streets.^dFor all this His anger is not turned back,But His ^ehand is still stretched out.²⁶He will also lift up a ^astandard to the ¹distant nations,And will ^bwhistle for it ^cfrom the ends of the earth;And behold, it will ^dcome with speed swiftly.²⁷^aNo one in it is weary or stumbles,None slumbers or sleeps;Nor is the ^bbelt at its waist undone,Nor its sandal strap broken.²⁸¹^,^aIts arrows are sharp and all its bows are bent;The hoofs of its horses ²seem like flint and its chariot ^bwheels like a whirlwind.²⁹Its ^aroaring is like a lioness, and it roars like young lions;It growls and ^bseizes the preyAnd carries it off with ^cno one to deliver it.³⁰And it will ^agrowl over it in that day like the roaring of the sea.If one ^blooks to the land, behold, there is darkness and distress;Even the light is darkened by its clouds.

The Temptation of Jesus

4^aNow Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, ^breturned from the Jordan and was being led around ¹by the Spirit in the wilderness ²for ^aforty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had finished, He was hungry. ³And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” ⁴And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘^aMan shall not live on bread alone.’”

⁵^aAnd he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of ¹^,^bthe world in a moment of time. ⁶And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this ¹^,^adominion and ²its glory, ^bfor it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. ⁷“Therefore if You ¹worship before me, it shall all be Yours.” ⁸And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is written, ‘^aYou shall worship the ¹Lord your God and serve Him only.’”

⁹^aAnd he led Him to Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here, ¹⁰for it is written, ‘^aHe will command His angels concerning You to guard You,’

¹¹and, ‘^aOn their hands they will bear You up,Lest You strike Your foot against a stone.’”

¹²And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is said, ‘^aYou shall not put the ¹Lord your God to the test.’”

¹³And when the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

¹⁴And ^aJesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and ^bnews about Him spread through all the surrounding district. ¹⁵And He was ^ateaching in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

¹⁶And He came to ^aNazareth, where He had been brought up, and as was His custom, ^bHe entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and ^cstood up to read. ¹⁷And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the scroll and found the place where it was written,

¹⁸“^aThe Spirit of the ¹Lord is upon Me,Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor.He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives,And recovery of sight to the blind,To set free those who are oppressed,¹⁹^aTo proclaim the favorable year of the ¹Lord.”

²⁰And He ^aclosed the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and ^bsat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. ²¹And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your ¹hearing.” ²²And all were ¹speaking well of Him and marveling at the ²gracious words which were coming forth from His lips, and they were saying, “^aIs this not Joseph’s son?” ²³And He said to them, “No doubt you will quote this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we heard took place ^aat Capernaum, do also here in ^byour hometown.’” ²⁴And He said, “Truly I say to you, ^ano prophet is welcome in his hometown. ²⁵“But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel ^ain the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land, ²⁶and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but ^aonly to ¹Zarephath, in the land of ^bSidon, to a woman who was a widow. ²⁷“And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, but ^aonly Naaman the Syrian.” ²⁸And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things, ²⁹and they stood up and ^adrove Him out of the city, and led Him to the edge of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw Him down the cliff. ³⁰But ^apassing through their midst, He went on His way.

Jesus Casts Out an Unclean Demon

³¹And ^aHe came down to ^bCapernaum, a city of Galilee, and He was teaching them on the Sabbath; ³²and ^athey were amazed at His teaching, for ^bHis ¹message was with authority. ³³And in the synagogue there was a man ¹possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, ³⁴“¹Let us alone! ²^,^aWhat do we have to do with You, Jesus the ^bNazarene? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—^cthe Holy One of God!” ³⁵But Jesus ^arebuked it, saying, “Be quiet and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst of the people, it came out of him without doing him any harm. ³⁶And amazement came upon them all, and they were talking with one another saying, “What is ¹this message? For ^awith authority and power He commands the unclean spirits and they come out.” ³⁷And ^athe report about Him was spreading into every place in the surrounding district.

Peter’s Mother-in-Law and Many Others Healed

³⁸^aThen He stood up and left the synagogue, and entered Simon’s home. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was ^bsuffering from a high fever, and they asked Him ¹to help her. ³⁹And standing over her, He ^arebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she stood up and ¹began waiting on them.

⁴⁰^aAnd while ^bthe sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him, and ^claying His hands on each one of them, He was ^dhealing them. ⁴¹And demons also were coming out of many, shouting and saying, “You are ^athe Son of God!” But ^brebuking them, He was ^cnot allowing them to speak, because they knew Him to be the ¹Christ.

⁴²^aWhen day came, Jesus left and went to a secluded place; and the crowds were eagerly seeking for Him, and came to Him and tried to keep Him from going away from them. ⁴³But He said to them, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also, ^afor I was sent for this purpose.”

⁴⁴So He kept on preaching in the synagogues ^aof ¹Judea.

¹²The wicked ^aschemes against the righteousAnd ^bgnashes at him with his teeth.¹³The Lord ^alaughs at him,For He sees that ^bhis day is coming.

¹⁴The wicked have drawn the sword and ^abent their bowTo cast down the ^bafflicted and the needy,To ^cslay those who are upright in conduct.¹⁵Their sword will enter their own heart,And their ^abows will be broken.

¹⁶^aBetter is the little of the righteousThan the abundance of many wicked.¹⁷For the ^aarms of the wicked will be broken,But Yahweh ^bsustains the righteous.

¹⁸Yahweh ^aknows the days of the ¹blameless,And their ^binheritance will be forever.¹⁹They will not be ashamed in the time of evil,And ^ain the days of famine they will be satisfied.

²⁰But the ^awicked will perish;And the enemies of Yahweh will be like the ¹glory of the pastures,They vanish—^bin smoke they vanish away.

²¹The wicked borrows and does not pay back,But the righteous ^ais gracious and gives.²²For ^athose blessed by Him will ^binherit the land,But those ^ccursed by Him will be cut off.

³²The ^awicked spies upon the righteousAnd ^bseeks to put him to death.³³Yahweh will ^anot forsake him in his hand;^bHe will not condemn him when he is judged.

³⁴^aHope for Yahweh and keep His way,And He will exalt you to inherit the land;When the ^bwicked are cut off, you will see it.

³⁵I have ^aseen a wicked, ruthless manSpreading himself like a ^bluxuriant ¹tree in its native soil.³⁶Then ¹he passed away, and behold, he ^awas no more;I sought for him, but he could not be found.
