40“aComfort, O comfort My people,” says your God.2“aSpeak to the heart of Jerusalem; And callout to her, that her 1,bwarfare has been fulfilled,That her 2,ciniquity has been removed,That she has received from the hand of YahwehdDouble for all her sins.”3aA voice1is calling,“bPrepare the way for Yahweh in the wilderness;Makesmooth in the desert a highway for our God.4“Let everyvalley be liftedup,And everymountain and hill be madelow; And let the roughgroundbecome a plain,And the ruggedterrain a broadvalley;51Then the aglory of Yahweh will be revealed,And ballflesh will seeittogether; For the cmouth of Yahweh has spoken.”6A voicesays, “Callout.”Then 1he answered, “What shall I callout?”aAllflesh is grass, and all its lovingkindness is like the flower of the field.7The agrass1withers, the flowerfades,2When the bbreath of Yahwehblows upon it;Surely the people are grass.8The grass1withers, the flowerfades,But athe word of our Godstandsforever.9Get yourself up on a ahighmountain,O Zion, bearerofbgoodnews,Raiseup your voicepowerfully,O Jerusalem, bearerofgoodnews;Raiseitup, do not fear.Say to the ccities of Judah,“dBehold your God!”10Behold, LordYahweh will comeawith strength,With His barmruling for Him.Behold, His creward is with HimAnd His recompensebefore Him.11Like a shepherd He will ashepherd His flock; In His arm He will gather the lambsAnd carrythem in His bosom; He will gently lead the nursingewes.12Who has ameasured the 1waters in the hollowof His hand,And 2encompassed the heavens by the 3span,And 4calculated the dust of the earth by the measure,And weighed the mountains in a balanceAnd the hills in a pair of scales?13aWho has 1encompassed the Spirit of Yahweh,Or as His bcounselor has informed Him?14aWith whom did He take counsel and whobgave Him understanding? And whotaught Him in the path of justice and taught Him knowledgeAnd made Him know the way of understanding?15Behold, the anations are like a drop from a bucket,And are counted as a speckofbdust on the scales;Behold, He lifts up the coastlands like finedust.16Even Lebanon is not enough to burn,Nor its abeastsenough for a burntoffering.17aAll the nations are as nothingbefore Him;They are counted by Him as non-existent and utterlyformless.18aTo whom then will you likenGod?Or whatlikeness will you compare with Him?19As for the agravenimages, a craftsmancasts it,A goldsmithbplates it with gold,And a silversmithfashionschains of silver.20He who is too impoverishedto make such a contributionChooses a atree that does not rot;He seeksout for himself a wisecraftsmanTo 1prepare a gravenimage that bwill not be shaken.21aDo you not know? Have you not heard?Has it not been declared to you from the beginning?Have you not understoodbfrom the foundations of the earth?22It is He who 1inhabitsabove the 2,acircle of the earth,And its inhabitants are like bgrasshoppers; It is He who cstretchesout the heavens like a dcurtainAnd spreads them out like a etent to inhabit.23It is He who reducesarulers to nothing,Who bmakes the 1judges of the earthutterlyformless.241Scarcely have they been planted;2Scarcely have they been sown;3Scarcely has their stemtakenroot in the earth,But He merelyblows on them, and they 4wither,And the astormcarries them away like stubble.25“aTo whom then will you liken MeThat I would behisequal?” says the HolyOne.26aLiftup your eyes on highAnd seebwho has createdthesestars,The cOne who leadsforth their host by number,He calls them all by name;Because of the dgreatness of His vigor and the 1strength of Hispower,eNot oneof themismissing.27aWhy do you say, O Jacob, and assert, O Israel,“My way is bhidden from Yahweh,And the cjustice due me passesbydmy God”?28aDo you not know? Have you not heard? The bEverlastingGod, Yahweh, the Creator of the ends of the earth,Does not becomeweary or tired. His understanding is cunsearchable.29He givespower to the aweary,And to him wholacksvigor He bincreasesmight.30Though ayouthsgrowweary and tired,And choicebyoungmenstumblebadly,31Yet those who hope in YahwehWill againnewpower; They will 1,bmountupwith2wings like eagles; They will run and not gettired; They will walk and not becomeweary.
John 5:25-6:71
Two Resurrections
25“Truly, truly, I say to you, aan hour is coming and now is, whenbthe dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who chear will live.26“For just as the Fatherhaslife in Himself, evenso He agave to the Sonalso to havelife in Himself;27and He gave Him authority to aexecutejudgment, because He is 1the Son of Man.28“Do not marvel at this; for aan hour is coming, in whichballwho are in the tombs will hear His voice,29and will comeforth; athose who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.
30“aI cando nothing from Myself. As I hear, I judge; and bMy judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My ownwill, but cthe will of Him who sent Me.
31“aIf I alonebearwitnessaboutMyself, My witness is not 1true.32“There is aanother who bearswitness about Me, and I know that the witnesswhich He givesabout Me is true.
Witnesses to Jesus: The Father and the Scriptures
33“You have sent to John, and he ahas bornewitness to the truth.34“But athe witness I receive is not from man, but I saythesethingsso that you may be saved.35“He was athe lamp that was burning and shining and you bwere willing to rejoice for 1a while in his light.36“But the witness I have is greater than the witness ofJohn; for athe workswhich the Father has given Me bto finish—the veryworks that I do—bearwitnessabout Me, that the Fatherchas sent Me.37“And the Father who sent Me, aHe has bornewitness about Me. You have neitherheard His voice at anytimenorseen His form.38“And you do not haveaHis wordabiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He bsent.39“1,aYou search the Scripturesbecause you think that in them you haveeternallife; it is bthese that bearwitnessabout Me;40and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may havelife.41“aI do not receiveglory from men;42but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves.43“I have come in My Father’sname, and you do not receive Me; aifanothercomesin his ownname, you will receive him.44“Howcan you believe, when you areceive1glory from oneanother and you do not seekbthe 2glory that is from cthe onlyGod?45“Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father; the one who accuses you is aMoses, in whom you have set your hope.46“For if you believedMoses, you would believe Me, for ahe wroteabout Me.47“But aif you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”
Jesus Feeds Five Thousand
6AfterthesethingsaJesuswentaway to the otherside of bthe Sea of Galilee (or cTiberias). 2Now a largecrowd was following Him, because they were seeing the 1,asignswhich He was doing on those who were sick. 3ThenaJesuswent up on the mountain, and there He was sittingdown with His disciples. 4Nowathe Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. 5ThereforeJesus, liftingup His eyes and seeing that a largecrowd was coming to Him, *said to aPhilip, “Where should we buybread, so that thesepeople may eat?”6And this He was saying to atest him, for He Himselfknewwhat He was going to do. 7aPhilipanswered Him, “bTwohundred1denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to receive a little.” 8One of His adisciples, bAndrew, SimonPeter’sbrother, *said to Him, 9“There is a boyherewhohasfivebarleyloaves and twoafish, but what are these for somanypeople?” 10Jesussaid, “Have the people1sitdown.”Now there was amuchgrass in the place. So the men2satdown, in numberaboutbfivethousand. 11Jesusthentook the loaves, and ahaving giventhanks, He distributedthem to those who were seated; likewisealso of the bfish, as much as they wanted. 12And when they were filled, He *said to His adisciples, “Gatherup the leftoverpiecesso that nothing will be lost.”13So they gathered them up, and filledtwelveabaskets with pieces of the fivebarleyloavesleftover by those who had eaten. 14Therefore when the peoplesaw the 1signwhich He had done, they were saying, “This is truly the aProphet who is to come into the world.”
Jesus Walks on the Sea
15SoJesus, knowing that they were going to come and take Him by forceato make Him king, bwithdrewagain to cthe mountain by Himselfalone.
16Nowwheneveningcame, His adiscipleswentdown to the sea, 17and after getting into a boat, they began tocross the seaato Capernaum. It had alreadybecomedark, and Jesus had not yetcome to them. 18And the sea*was stirred up because a strongwind was blowing. 19Then, when they had rowedabout1twenty-five or thirty stadia, they *sawJesuswalking on the sea and drawingnear to the boat; and they werefrightened. 20But He *said to them, 1“It is I; 2,ado not beafraid.”21So they were willing to receive Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
22On the nextday, athe crowd which stood on the otherside of the seasaw that there was noothersmallboatthere, exceptone, and that Jesusbhad not entered with His disciples into the boat, but that His disciples had goneawayalone. 23Othersmallboatscame from aTiberiasnear to the placewhere they ate the bread after the bLordchad giventhanks. 24Sowhen the crowdsaw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselvesgot into the smallboats, and acame to CapernaumseekingJesus. 25And when they found Him on the otherside of the sea, they said to Him, “aRabbi, when did You comehere?”
I Am the Bread of Life
26Jesusanswered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you aseek Me, not because you sawbsigns, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.27“Do not awork for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to beternallife, whichcthe Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, dset His seal.”28Therefore they said to Him, “What should we do, so that we may work the works of God?” 29Jesusanswered and said to them, “This is athe work of God, that you believe in Him whom He bhas sent.”30So they said to Him, “aWhatthen do You do for a bsignso that we may see, and believe You? Whatwork do You perform? 31“aOur fathersate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘bHe gave them bread from heaven toeat.’” 32Jesusthensaid to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, Moses has not given you the bread from heaven, but My Fathergives you the truebread from heaven.33“For the bread of God is 1that which acomesdown from heaven and giveslife to the world.”34Then they said to Him, “Lord, alwaysagive us thisbread.”
35Jesussaid to them, “aI am the bread of life. He who comes to Me will never hunger, and he who believes in Me bwill never thirst.36“But aI said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe.37“aAll that the Fathergives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never castout.38“For aI have comedown from heaven, bnot to do My ownwill, but cthe will of Him who dsent Me.39“Now this is the will of Him who sent Me, that of aall that He has given Me I blosenothing, but craise it up on the lastday.40“For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who asees the Son and bbelieves in Him will haveeternallife, and I Myself will craise him up on the lastday.”
Words to the Jews
41aTherefore the Jews were grumblingabout Him, because He said, “I am the bread that bcamedown from heaven.”42They were saying, “aIs not thisJesus, the son of Joseph, whosefather and motherbwe know? How does He nowsay, ‘cI have comedown from heaven’?” 43Jesusanswered and said to them, “Stop grumblingamongyourselves.44“Noonecancome to Me unless the Father who sent Me adraws him; and I will braise him up on the lastday.45“It is writtenain the prophets, ‘bAnd they shall all bectaught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Fathercomes to Me.46“aNot that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father.47“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believesahaseternallife.48“aI am the bread of life.49“aYour fathersate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.50“This is the bread which acomesdown from heaven, so that one may eat of it and bnot die.51“aI am the livingbread that bcamedown from heaven; ifanyoneeats of thisbread, che will liveforever; and also the breadwhich I will givedfor the life of the world is eMy flesh.”
52aThen the Jewsbbegan toargue with oneanother, saying, “Howcanthismangive us Hisflesh to eat?” 53SoJesussaid to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of athe Son of Man and drink His blood, you havenolife in yourselves.54“He who eats My flesh and drinks My bloodhaseternallife, and I will araise him up on the lastday.55“For My flesh is truefood, and My blood is truedrink.56“He who eats My flesh and drinks My bloodaabides in Me, and I in him.57“As the alivingFatherbsent Me, and I livebecause of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will livebecause of Me.58“This is the breadwhichacamedownout of heaven, not as bthe fathersate and died. He who eatsthisbreadcwill liveforever.”
Words to the Disciples
59Thesethings He saidain the synagogue as He taughtbin Capernaum.
60Thereforemany of His adisciples, when they heardthissaid, “bThis is a difficultstatement; whocanlisten to it?” 61But Jesus, aknowing in Himself that His disciples were grumbling at this, said to them, “Does thisbcause you to stumble?62“Whatthenif you seeathe Son of Manbascending to where He was before?63“aThe Spirit is the One who giveslife; the fleshprofitsnothing; bthe words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.64“But there are asome of you who do not believe.” For Jesusbknew from the beginningwho they were who did not believe, and cwho it was that would 1betray Him. 65And He was saying, “For thisreason I have asaid to you, that noonecancome to Me unless bit has beengranted him from the Father.”
Peter Confesses Jesus Is the Christ
66As a result of thismany of His adisciples1,bwent away and were not walking with Him anymore. 67SoJesussaid to athe twelve, “Do youalsowant to go?”68aSimonPeteranswered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You havebwords of eternallife. 69“And we have believed and have come to know that You are athe HolyOne of God.” 70Jesusanswered them, “aDid I Myself not choose you, bthe twelve, and yetone of you is ca devil?”71Now He was speaking of Judasathe son of SimonIscariot, for he, bone of cthe twelve, 1wasgoingtobetray Him.
