I Will Give You as a Light of the Nations

49Listen to Me, O ^acoastlands,And pay attention, you peoples from afar.^bYahweh called Me from the womb;From the ¹body of My mother He made My name to be remembered.²He has set My ^amouth like a sharp sword;In the ^bshadow of His hand He has concealed Me;And He has also set Me as a ¹select ^carrow;He has hidden Me in His quiver.³He said to Me, “^aYou are My Servant, Israel,^bIn Whom I will ¹show forth My beautiful glory.”⁴But I said, “I have ^atoiled in vain;I have spent My might for ¹nothing and vanity;Yet surely the justice due to Me is with Yahweh,And My ^breward with My God.”⁵So now says ^aYahweh, who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant,To return Jacob back to Him, so that ^bIsrael might be gathered to Him(For I am ^cglorified in the sight of Yahweh,And My God is My ^dstrength),⁶He says, “It is too ¹small a thing that You should be My ServantTo raise up the tribes of Jacob and to cause the ^apreserved ones of Israel to return;I will also give You as a ^blight ²of the nationsSo that My salvation may ³reach to the ^cend of the earth.”⁷Thus says Yahweh, the ^aRedeemer of Israel and its Holy One,To the ^bdespised One,To the One abhorred by the nation,To the Servant of rulers,“^cKings will see and arise,Princes will also ^dbow down,Because of Yahweh who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel who has chosen You.”

⁸Thus says Yahweh, “In an ^aacceptable time I have answered You,And in a day of salvation I have helped You;And I will ^bguard You and ^cgive You for a covenant of the people,To ^destablish the land, to make them inherit the desolate ¹inheritance;

⁹Saying to those who are ^abound, ‘Go forth,’To those who are in darkness, ‘¹Show yourselves.’Along the roads they will ²feed,And their pasture will be on all ^bbare heights.¹⁰“They will ^anot hunger or thirst,Nor will the scorching ^bheat or sun strike them down;For ^cHe who has compassion on them will ^dguide themAnd will lead them to ^esprings of water.¹¹“I will set all ^aMy mountains as a road,And My ^bhighways will be raised up.¹²“Behold, these will come ^afrom afar;And behold, these will come from the ^bnorth and from the west,And these from the land of Sinim.”¹³^aShout for joy, O heavens! And rejoice, O earth!Break forth into joyful shouting, O mountains!For ^bYahweh has comforted His peopleAnd will ^chave compassion on His afflicted.

Promise to Zion

¹⁴But Zion said, “Yahweh has forsaken me,And the Lord has forgotten me.”¹⁵“Can a woman forget her infantAnd have no compassion on the son of her womb?Even these may forget, but ^aI will not forget you.¹⁶“Behold, I have ^ainscribed you on the palms of My hands;Your ^bwalls are continually before Me.¹⁷“Your ¹builders hurry;Your ^adestroyers and devastatorsWill depart from you.¹⁸“^aLift up your eyes and look around;^bAll of them gather together; ^cthey come to you.^dAs I live,” declares Yahweh,“You will surely ^eput on all of them as ¹jewels and bind them on as a bride.¹⁹“For ^ayour ¹devastated and desolate places and your destroyed land—Surely now you will be ^btoo cramped for the inhabitants,And those who ^cswallowed you will be far away.²⁰“The ^achildren of ¹whom you were bereaved will yet say in your ears,‘The place is too cramped for me;Make room for me that I may live here.’²¹“Then you will ^asay in your heart,‘Who has borne these for me?Indeed, I have been bereaved of my childrenAnd am ^bbarren, an ^cexile and a wanderer.And who has reared these?Behold, I ^dremained alone;¹^,^eFrom where did these come?’”

²²Thus says Lord Yahweh, “Behold, I will lift up My hand to the nationsAnd make high My ^astandard to the peoples;And they will ^bbring your sons in their bosom,And your daughters will be lifted up on their shoulders.

²³“^aKings will be your guardians,And their princesses your nurses.They will ^bbow down to you with their ¹faces to the earthAnd ^click the dust of your feet;And you will ^dknow that I am Yahweh;Those who ^ehope in Me will ^fnot be put to shame.²⁴“^aCan the prey be taken from the mighty man,Or the captives of the ¹righteous be granted escape?”

²⁵Surely, thus says Yahweh, “Even the ^acaptives of the mighty man will be taken away,And the prey of the tyrant will be granted escape;For I will contend with the one who contends with you,And I will ^bsave your sons.

²⁶“I will feed ^athose who mistreat you with their ^bown flesh,And they will become drunk with their own blood as with sweet wine;And ^call flesh will know that I, Yahweh, am your ^dSaviorAnd your ^eRedeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”

Yahweh Helps His Servant

50Thus says Yahweh, “Where is the ^acertificate of divorceBy which I have ^bsent your mother away?Or to which of My creditors did I ^csell you?Behold, you were sold for your ^diniquities,And for your ^etransgressions your mother ^fwas sent away.

²“Why was there ^ano man when I came?When I called, why was there none to answer?Is My ^bhand so short that it cannot ransom?Or have I no power to deliver?Behold, I ^cdry up the sea with My rebuke;I ^dmake the rivers a wilderness;Their fish stink for lack of waterAnd die of thirst.³“I ^aclothe the heavens with blacknessAnd make sackcloth their covering.”⁴Lord Yahweh has given Me the tongue of ^adisciples,That I may know how to ^bsustain the weary one with a word.He awakens Me ^cmorning by morning;He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple.⁵Lord Yahweh has ^aopened My ear;And I did ^bnot rebelNor did I turn back.⁶I ^agave My back to those who strike Me,And My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard;I did not hide My face from dishonor and spitting.⁷Even now Lord Yahweh ^ahelps Me,Therefore, I am ^bnot dishonored;Therefore, I have set My face like ^cflint,And I know that I will not be ashamed.⁸He who ¹^,^avindicates Me is near;Who will contend with Me?Let us ^bstand up to each other;Who has a judgment against Me?Let him approach Me.⁹Behold, ^aLord Yahweh helps Me;^bWho is he who condemns Me?Behold, ^cthey will all wear out like a garment;The moth will eat them.¹⁰Who is among you that fears Yahweh,That listens to the voice of His ^aServant,That ^bwalks in darkness and has no light?Let him ^ctrust in the name of Yahweh and rely on his God.¹¹Behold, all you who ^akindle a fire,Who gird yourselves with firebrands,Walk in the light of your fireAnd among the brands you have set ablaze.This you will have from My hand:You will ^blie down in torment.

The Lord’s Supper

13Now before the Feast of ^athe Passover, Jesus knowing that ^bHis hour had come that He would depart out of this world ^cto the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them ¹to the end. ²And during supper, ^athe devil having already put into the heart of ^bJudas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him, ³Jesus, ^aknowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that ^bHe had come forth from God and was going back to God, ⁴*got up from supper, and *laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He ^atied it around Himself.

Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

⁵Then He *poured water into the washbasin, and began to ^awash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel which He had tied around Himself. ⁶So He *came to Simon Peter. He *said to Him, “Lord, are You going to wash my feet?” ⁷Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not realize now, but you will understand ^aafterwards.” ⁸Peter *said to Him, “You will never wash my feet—ever!” Jesus answered him, “^aIf I do not wash you, ^byou have no part with Me.” ⁹Simon Peter *said to Him, “Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.” ¹⁰Jesus *said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and ^ayou are clean, but not all of you.” ¹¹For ^aHe knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, “Not all of you are clean.”

¹²So when He had washed their feet, and ^ataken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? ¹³“You call Me ^aTeacher and ^bLord; and ¹you are right, for so I am. ¹⁴“If I then, ^athe Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. ¹⁵“For I gave you ^aan example that you also should do as I did to you. ¹⁶“Truly, truly, I say to you, ^aa slave is not greater than his master, nor is ^bone who is sent greater than the one who sent him. ¹⁷“If you know these things, you are ^ablessed if you do them. ¹⁸“^aI do not speak about all of you. I know the ones I have ^bchosen; but ^cthat the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘^dHe who eats My bread has lifted up his heel against Me.’ ¹⁹“From now on ^aI am telling you before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe that ^bI am He. ²⁰“Truly, truly, I say to you, ^ahe who receives anyone I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

²¹When Jesus had said these things, He ^abecame troubled in spirit, and bore witness and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, that ^bone of you will ¹betray Me.” ²²The disciples began looking at one another, ^aperplexed about whom He *spoke. ²³There was reclining on ^aJesus’ bosom one of His disciples, ^bwhom Jesus loved. ²⁴So Simon Peter *gestured to him to inquire, “Who is the one of whom He is speaking?” ²⁵He, ^aleaning back thus on Jesus’ bosom, *said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” ²⁶Jesus *answered, “He is the one for whom I shall dip the piece of bread and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the piece of bread, He *took and *gave it to Judas, ^athe son of Simon Iscariot. ²⁷And after the piece of bread, ^aSatan then ^bentered into him. Therefore Jesus *said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” ²⁸Now no one of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose He had said this to him. ²⁹For some were thinking, because Judas ^ahad the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, “Buy the things we have need of ^bfor the feast”; or else, that he should ^cgive something to the poor. ³⁰So after receiving the piece of bread, he went out immediately. And ^ait was night.

³¹Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus *said, “Now ¹is ^athe Son of Man ^bglorified, and ^cGod ²is glorified in Him; ³²¹if God is glorified in Him, ^aGod will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately. ³³“^aLittle children, I am with you ^ba little while longer. ^cYou will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ ³⁴“A ^anew commandment I give to you, ^bthat you love one another, ^ceven as I have loved you, that you also love one another. ³⁵“^aBy this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

³⁶Simon Peter *said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, “^aWhere I go, you cannot follow Me now; but ^byou will follow later.” ³⁷Peter *said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You right now? ^aI will lay down my life for You.” ³⁸Jesus *answered, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, ^aa rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.

Yet God Is My King

Why, O God? Have You ^arejected us forever?Why does Your anger ^bsmoke against the ^csheep of Your ²pasture?²Remember Your congregation, which You have ^apurchased of old,Which You have ^bredeemed to be the ^ctribe of Your inheritance;And this Mount ^dZion, where You have dwelt.³Lift up Your steps toward the ^aperpetual ruins;The enemy ^bhas damaged everything within the sanctuary.⁴Your adversaries have ^aroared in the midst of Your meeting place;They have set up their ^bown signs ^cfor signs.⁵Each seems like one who lifts up¹An ^aaxe against the undergrowth of trees.⁶And now its ^acarved work altogetherThey smash with hatchet and ¹hammers.⁷They have ^aset Your sanctuary on fire;By bringing it to the ground, they have ^bdefiled the dwelling place of Your name.⁸They ^asaid in their heart, “Let us ¹completely ²subdue them.”They have burned all the meeting places of God in the land.⁹We do not see our ^asigns;There is ^bno longer any prophet,Nor is there any among us who knows ^chow long.¹⁰How long, O God, will the adversary ^areproach?Will the enemy ^bspurn Your name forever?¹¹Why ^ado You turn back Your hand, even Your right hand?From within Your bosom, ^bdestroy them!¹²Yet God is ^amy King from of old,Who works deeds of ¹salvation in the midst of the earth.¹³You ^adivided the sea by Your strength;You ^bbroke the heads of the ^csea monsters ¹in the waters.¹⁴You crushed the heads of ¹^,^aLeviathan;You gave him as food for the ²creatures ^bof the desert.¹⁵¹You ^asplit open spring and river;²You ^bdried up ever-flowing rivers.¹⁶Yours is the day, Yours also is the night;¹You have ^aestablished the ²light and the sun.¹⁷¹You have ^acaused all the boundaries of the earth to stand firm;²You have formed ^bsummer and winter.¹⁸Remember this, O Yahweh, that the enemy has ^areproached,And a ^bwickedly foolish people has spurned Your name.¹⁹Do not deliver the soul of Your ^aturtledove to the wild beast;^bDo not forget the life of Your afflicted forever.²⁰Look to the ^acovenant;For the ^bdark places of the land are full of the haunts of violence.²¹Let not the ^aoppressed return dishonored;Let the ^bafflicted and needy praise Your name.²²Arise, O God, and ^aplead Your own cause;Remember ¹how the ^bwicked fool reproaches You all day long.²³Do not forget the voice of Your ^aadversaries,The ^brumbling of those who rise against You which ascends continually.
