Isaiah’s Vision of Yahweh

6In the year of ^aKing Uzziah’s death ^bI saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, with the train of His robe filling the temple. ²Seraphim stood above Him, ^aeach having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. ³And one called out to another and said, “^aHoly, Holy, Holy, is Yahweh of hosts;The ¹^,^bwhole earth is full of His glory.”

⁴And the ¹foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called out, while the ^ahouse of God was filling with smoke. ⁵Then I said, “^aWoe is me, for I am ruined!For I am a man of ^bunclean lips,And I live among a ^cpeople of unclean lips;For my eyes have seen the ^dKing, Yahweh of hosts.”

⁶Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal in his hand, which he had taken from the ^aaltar with tongs. ⁷And he ^atouched my mouth with it and said, “Behold, this has touched your lips; and ^byour iniquity is taken away, and your sin is atoned for.”

Yahweh Sends Isaiah

⁸Then I heard the ^avoice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then ^bI said, “Here am I. Send me!” ⁹He said, “Go, and tell this people: ‘Keep on ^ahearing, but do not understand;Keep on seeing, but do not know.’

¹⁰“^aRender the hearts of this people ¹^,^binsensitive,Their ears ²dull,And their eyes ³dim,^cLest they see with their eyes,And hear with their ears,And understand with their hearts,And return and be healed.”

¹¹Then I said, “Lord, ^ahow long?” And He said, “Until ^bcities are devastated and without inhabitant,Houses are without people,And the land is devastated to desolation,

¹²And Yahweh has ^aremoved men far away,And the ¹^,^bforsaken places are many in the midst of the land.¹³“Yet there will be a tenth portion in it,And it will again be subject to burning,Like a terebinth or like an ^aoakWhose stump remains when it is felled.The ^bholy seed is its stump.”

Isaiah Sent to King Ahaz

7Now it happened in the days of ^aAhaz, the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that ^bRezin the king of Aram and ^cPekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but ^dcould not ¹conquer it. ²When it was told to the ^ahouse of David, saying, “¹The Arameans ^bhave camped in ^cEphraim,” his heart and the hearts of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake before the wind.

³Then Yahweh said to Isaiah, “Go out now to meet Ahaz, you and your son ¹Shear-jashub, at the end of the ^aconduit of the upper pool, to the highway of the ²fuller’s field, ⁴and say to him, ‘Take care and stay ^aquiet, have no ^bfear and ^cdo not be fainthearted because of these two stubs of smoldering ^dfirebrands, on account of the burning anger of Rezin and Aram and the ^eson of Remaliah. ⁵‘Because ^aAram, with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has counseled evil against you, saying, ⁶“Let us go up against Judah and ¹terrorize it, and make for ourselves a breach in ²its walls and set up the son of Tabeel as king in the midst of it,” ⁷thus says Lord Yahweh: “^aIt shall not stand, nor shall it happen. ⁸“For the head of Aram is ^aDamascus and the head of Damascus is Rezin (now within another sixty-five years Ephraim will be shattered, so that it is no longer a people), ⁹and the head of Ephraim is Samaria and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah. ^aIf you do not ¹establish your faith in Yahweh, you surely shall not ²be established.”’”

The Sign of Immanuel

¹⁰Then Yahweh spoke again to Ahaz, saying, ¹¹“Ask a ^asign for yourself from Yahweh your God; ¹make it deep as Sheol or high as ²heaven.” ¹²But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not test Yahweh!” ¹³Then he said, “¹Listen now, O ^ahouse of David! Is it too slight a thing for you to try the patience of men, that you will ^btry the patience of ^cmy God as well? ¹⁴“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, ^athe ¹virgin ²will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name ³^,^bImmanuel. ¹⁵“He will eat ^acurds and honey ¹in order that He will know to refuse evil and choose good. ¹⁶“^aFor before the boy will know to refuse evil and choose good, ^bthe land whose two kings you dread will be forsaken. ¹⁷“Yahweh will bring on you, on your people, and on your father’s house days which have never come since the day that ^aEphraim separated from Judah—the ^bking of Assyria!”

Trials to Come for Judah

¹⁸And it will be in that day, that Yahweh will ^awhistle for the fly that is in the ¹^,^bremotest part of the rivers of Egypt and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. ¹⁹And they will all come and rest upon the steep ¹ravines, on the ^acrevices of the cliffs, ^bon all the thorn bushes, and on all the ²watering places.

²⁰In that day, the Lord will ^ashave with a ^brazor—one ^chired from regions beyond ^dthe ¹River (that is, the king of Assyria)—the head and the hair of the legs; and it will also remove the beard.

²¹And it will be in that day, that a man may keep alive a ^aheifer and a pair of sheep; ²²and because of the abundance of the milk produced, he will eat curds, for everyone that is left within the land will eat ^acurds and honey.

²³And it will be in that day, ^athat every place where there used to be one thousand vines, valued at ¹one thousand shekels of silver, will become ^bbriars and thorns. ²⁴People will come there with bows and arrows because all the land will be briars and thorns. ²⁵As for all the hills which used to be cultivated with the hoe, you will not go there for fear of briars and thorns; but they will become a place for ¹^,^apasturing oxen and for sheep to trample.

The First Disciples

5^aNow it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing at the edge of ^bthe lake of Gennesaret; ²and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake, and the fishermen, having gotten out of them, were washing their nets. ³^aAnd He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down and began teaching the crowds from the boat. ⁴And when He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and ^alet down your nets for a catch.” ⁵Simon answered and said, “^aMaster, ^bwe labored all night and caught nothing, but at Your word, I will let down the nets.” ⁶And when they had done this, ^athey enclosed a great quantity of fish. And their nets began to break; ⁷so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink. ⁸But when Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!” ⁹For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken, ¹⁰and ¹James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon, were also likewise amazed. And Jesus said to Simon, “^aDo not fear, from now on you will be ^bcatching men.” ¹¹And when they had brought their boats to land, ^athey left everything and followed Him.

Jesus Heals a Leper

¹²^aAnd it happened that while He was in one of the cities, behold, there was a man ¹covered with leprosy; and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” ¹³And He stretched out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And immediately the leprosy left him. ¹⁴And He directed him to tell no one, “But go and ^ashow yourself to the priest and make an offering for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” ¹⁵But ^athe news about Him was spreading even farther, and large crowds were gathering to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses. ¹⁶But He Himself would often slip away ¹to the desolate regions and ^apray.

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

¹⁷And it happened that ¹one day He was teaching; and ^athere were some Pharisees and ^bteachers of the law sitting there, who had ^ccome from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem, and ^dthe power of the Lord was present for Him to perform healing. ¹⁸^aAnd behold, some men were carrying on a stretcher a man who was paralyzed; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down before Him. ¹⁹But not finding any way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on ^athe roof and let him down ^bthrough the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus. ²⁰And seeing their faith, He said, “¹Friend, ^ayour sins are forgiven you.” ²¹The scribes and the Pharisees ^abegan to reason, saying, “^bWho is this who speaks blasphemies? ^cWho can forgive sins, but God alone?” ²²But Jesus, ¹knowing their reasonings, answered and said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts? ²³“Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins have been forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? ²⁴“But, so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,”—He said to the ^aparalytic—“I say to you, get up, and, picking up your stretcher, go home.” ²⁵And immediately he rose up before them, and picked up what he had been lying on, and went home ^aglorifying God. ²⁶And astonishment seized them all and they began ^aglorifying God; and they were filled ^bwith fear, saying, “We have seen remarkable things today.”

Levi and Sinners Called

²⁷^aAnd after that He went out and noticed a tax collector named ¹^,^bLevi sitting in the tax office, and He said to him, “Follow Me.” ²⁸And he ^aleft everything behind, and rose up and began to follow Him.

²⁹And ^aLevi gave a big reception for Him in his house; and there was a great crowd of ^btax collectors and other people who were reclining at the table with them. ³⁰^aAnd the Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling at His disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and ¹sinners?” ³¹And Jesus answered and said to them, “^aIt is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick. ³²“I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”

³³And they said to Him, “^aThe disciples of John often fast and offer prayers, the disciples of the Pharisees also do likewise, but Yours eat and drink.” ³⁴And Jesus said to them, “Can you make the ¹attendants of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? ³⁵“^aBut the days will come; and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.” ³⁶And He was also telling them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will both tear the new and the piece from the new will not match the old. ³⁷“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined. ³⁸“But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. ³⁹“And no one, after drinking old wine wishes for new; for he says, ‘The old is good enough.’”

Do Not Forsake Me, O Yahweh

A Psalm of David. To bring to remembrance.

O Yahweh, ^areprove me not in Your wrath,And discipline me not in Your burning anger.²For Your ^aarrows have pressed deep into me,And ^bYour hand has pressed down upon me.³There is ^ano soundness in my flesh ^bbecause of Your indignation;There is no health ^cin my bones because of my sin.⁴For my ^ainiquities go over my head;As a heavy burden they weigh too much for me.⁵My ¹wounds stink and rotBecause of ^amy ²folly.⁶I am bent over and ^agreatly bowed down;I ^bgo mourning all day long.⁷For my loins are filled with ^aburning,And there is ^bno soundness in my flesh.⁸I am ^afaint and ¹badly crushed;I ²^,^bgroan because of the ³agitation of my heart.⁹Lord, all ^amy desire is ¹before You;And my ^bsighing is not hidden from You.¹⁰My heart throbs, ^amy strength forsakes me;And the ^blight of my eyes, even ¹that ²has gone from me.¹¹My ¹^,^aloved ones and my friends stand aloof from my plague;And my kinsmen ^bstand afar off.¹²Those who ^asearch for my life ^blay snares for me;And those who ^cseek ¹to do me evil have ²threatened destruction,And they ^dmeditate on deception all day long.¹³But I, like a deaf man, do not hear;And I am like a ^amute man who does not open his mouth.¹⁴And I am like a man who does not hear,And in whose mouth are no reproofs.¹⁵For ^aI ¹wait on You, O Yahweh;You ^bwill answer, O Lord my God.¹⁶For I said, “Save, lest they be glad over me,Who, when my foot stumbles, ^amagnify themselves against me.”¹⁷For I am ^aready to fall,And ^bmy ¹sorrow is continually before me.¹⁸For I ¹^,^aconfess my iniquity;I am full of ^banxiety because of my sin.¹⁹But my ^aenemies are vigorous and ¹strong,And those who wrongfully ^bhate me abound.²⁰And those who ^arepay evil for good,They ^baccuse me, for I pursue what is good.²¹Do not forsake me, O Yahweh;O my God, ^ado not be far from me!²²Make ^ahaste to help me,O Lord, ^bmy salvation!
