45This is the messagewhichJeremiah the prophetspoke to aBaruch the son of Neriah, when he had bwrittendownthesewords in a book1at Jeremiah’sdictation, in the cfourthyear of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying: 2“ThussaysYahweh the God of Israel to you, O Baruch: 3‘You said, “Ah, woe is me! For Yahweh has addedsorrow to my pain; I am aweary with my sighing and have foundnorest.”’ 4“Thus you are to say to him, ‘ThussaysYahweh, “Behold, awhat I have built I am about to pulldown, and what I have planted I am about to uproot, that is, the wholeland.” 5‘But as for you, are you aseekinggreatthings for yourself? Do not seekthem; for behold, I am going to bbringcalamity on allflesh,’ declaresYahweh, ‘but I will cgive your life to you as spoil in all the places where you may go.’”
1 Corinthians 9 - 10
Paul Gives Up His Rights
9Am I not afree? Am I not an bapostle? Have I not cseenJesus our Lord? Are you not dmy work in the Lord? 2If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you, for you are the aseal of my bapostleship in the Lord.
3My defense to those who examine me is this: 4aDo we not haveauthority to eat and drink? 5aDo we not haveauthority to takealong a 1believingwife, even as the rest of the apostles and the bbrothers of the Lord and cCephas? 6Or do only1,aBarnabas and I not haveauthority to refrain from working? 7Who at anytimeservesaasasoldier at his ownexpense? Whobplants a vineyard and does not 1consume the fruit of it? Orwhoshepherds a flock and does not 2consume the milk of the flock?
8Am I speakingthesethingsaaccording to 1humanjudgment? Or does not the Lawalsosaythesethings? 9For it is written in the Law of Moses, “aYou shall not muzzle the ox while it is threshing.” Is Godmerelyconcernedaboutboxen? 10Or is He speakingaltogether for our sake? Yes, afor our sake it was written, becausebthe plowmanought to plow in hope, and the thresherto thresh in hope of sharingthe crops.11aIf we sowedspiritualthings in you, is it toomuchif we reapmaterialthings from you? 12Ifothersshare this authority over you, do we not more? Nevertheless, we adid not usethisauthority, but we endureallthingsbso that we will cause no hindrance to the cgospel of Christ. 13aDo you not know that those who bperformsacredserviceseat the food of the temple, andthose who attendregularly to the altarhave their share1from the altar? 14Soalsoathe Lorddirectedthose who proclaim the bgospel to cget their living from the gospel.
15But I have ausednone of thesethings. And I am not writingthesethingsso that it will be doneso in my case, for it would be better for me to diethan have anyonemakebmy boast an empty one. 16For if I proclaim the gospel, I have nothing to boast, for aI amundercompulsion. For woe is me if I do not proclaimbthe gospel. 17For if I dothisvoluntarily, I have a areward; but ifagainst my will, I have a bstewardshipentrusted to me. 18Whatthen is my areward? That, when I proclaim the gospel, I may offer the gospelbwithoutcharge, so as cnot to makefulluseof my authority in the gospel.
19For though I amafree from all, I have mademyselfba slave to all, so that I may cwinmore. 20aAnd to the Jews I became as a Jew, so that I might winJews. To thosewho are under1the Law, as under2the Law though bnot beingmyselfunder3the Law, so that I might winthosewho are under4the Law. 21To those who are awithoutlaw, bas withoutlaw, though not beingwithoutthelaw of God but cunderthelaw of Christ, so that I might winthose who are withoutlaw. 22To the aweak I becameweak, that I might win the weak. I have becomeballthings to allmen, cso that I may by allmeanssavesome. 23So I doallthings for the sake of the gospel, so that I may become a fellowpartaker of it.
24aDo you not know that those who run in a 1raceallrun, but onlyonereceivesbthe prize? cRuninsuchaway that you may win. 25Now everyone who acompetesinthegamesexercisesself-control in allthings. They thendo it to receive a corruptiblebcrown, but we an incorruptible. 26Therefore I aruninsuchaway, as not withoutaim; I boxinsuchaway, as not bbeating the air; 27but I 1disciplineamy body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.
Temptation and God’s Faithfulness
10For aI do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were allbunder the cloud and allcpassedthrough the sea; 2and all were abaptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3and allaate the samespiritualfood; 4and alladrank the samespiritualdrink, for they were drinking from a spiritualrock which followed them, and the rock was 1Christ. 5Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased. For athey were1struckdown in the wilderness. 6Nowthesethingshappened as aexamples for us, so that we would not crave evilthings as bthey alsocraved.
7Do not be aidolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, “bThe peoplesatdown to eat and drink, and stoodup tocplay.” 8Nor let us act in sexualimmorality, as asome of them 1did, and btwenty-three thousandfell in oneday. 9Nor let us putChristtothetest, as asome of them 1did, and were destroyed by the serpents. 10Noragrumble, as some of them 1did, and bwere destroyed by the cdestroyer. 11Nowthesethingshappened to them as an aexample, and bthey were written for our instruction, upon whomcthe ends of the ages have arrived. 12Therefore let him who athinks he standstakeheed that he does not fall. 13Notemptation has overtaken you but such as is commontoman, but aGod is faithful, who will not allow you to be btemptedbeyondwhat you are able, but with the temptation will provide the wayofescapealso, so that you will be able to endure it.
14Therefore, my abeloved, flee from bidolatry. 15I speak as to prudentpeople. You judgewhat I say. 16Is not the acup of blessingwhich we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the 1,bbreadwhich we break a sharing in the body of Christ? 17Since there is one1bread, we awho are many are onebody, for we allpartake of the one2bread. 18Look at 1the nationaIsrael. Are not those who beat the sacrificessharers in the altar? 19What do I meanthen? That a thingsacrificedtoidols is anything, orathat an idol is anything? 20No, but I say that the things which the Gentilessacrifice, they asacrifice to demons and not to God. And I do not want you to becomesharers in demons. 21aYou cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and bthe table of demons. 22Or do we aprovoke the1Lordtojealousy? Are we bstronger than He?
23aAllthings are lawful, but not allthingsareprofitable. Allthings are lawful, but not allthingsbbuildup. 24Let nooneaseek his owngood, but that of the other person. 25aEatanything that is sold in the meatmarketwithoutaskingquestions for conscience’sake. 26aFor the earth is the1Lord’s, as well as its fullness. 27Ifaone of the unbelieversinvites you and you want to go, beatanything that is setbefore you withoutaskingquestions for conscience’sake. 28But aifanyonesays to you, “This is meat consecrated to idols,” do not eatit, for the sake of the one who informedyou, and for conscience’ sake. 29I do not mean your ownconscience, but the otherperson’s. For awhy is my freedomjudged by another’sconscience? 30If I partake with gratefulness, awhy am I slanderedconcerning that for which I bgivethanks?
31Whether, then, you eatordrinkorawhatever you do, doall to the glory of God. 32aGivenooffenseeither to Jewsor to Greeksor to bthe church of God; 33just as I alsoapleaseallmen in allthings, bnot seeking my ownprofit but the profit of the many, cso that they may be saved.
