I Will Be Declared Righteous

13“^aBehold, my eye has seen all this;My ear has heard and understood it.²“^aWhat you know I also know;I have not fallen short of you.³“But ^aI would speak to ¹the Almighty,And I desire to ^bargue with God.⁴“But you ^acover me with lies;You are all ^bworthless physicians.⁵“O that you would ^abe completely silent,And that it would become your wisdom!⁶“Please hear my argumentAnd give heed to the contentions of my lips.⁷“Will you ^aspeak what is unrighteous for God,And speak what is deceitful for Him?⁸“Will you ^ashow partiality for Him?Will you contend for God?⁹“Will it be well when He examines you?Or ^awill you deceive Him as one deceives a man?¹⁰“He will surely reprove youIf you secretly ^ashow partiality.¹¹“Will not ^aHis exaltedness terrify you,And the dread of Him fall on you?¹²“Your memorable sayings are proverbs of ashes;Your defenses are defenses of clay.¹³“^aBe silent before me so that I may speak;Then let come on me what may.¹⁴“Why should I take my flesh in my teethAnd ^aput my life in my ¹hands?¹⁵“¹^,^aThough He slay me,I will hope in Him.Nevertheless I ^bwill argue my ways ²before Him.¹⁶“This also will be my ^asalvation,For ^ba godless man may not come before His presence.¹⁷“¹Listen carefully to my words,And let my declaration fill your ears.¹⁸“Behold now, I have ^aarranged my case for justice;I know that ^bI will be declared righteous.¹⁹“^aWho will contend with me?For now I am silent and ^bwill breathe my last.²⁰“Only two things do not do to me,Then I will not hide from Your face:²¹^aMove Your ¹hand far from me,And let not the dread of You terrify me.²²“Then call, and ^aI will answer;Or let me speak, then respond to me.²³“^aHow many are my iniquities and sins?Make known to me my transgression and my sin.²⁴“Why do You ^ahide Your faceAnd think of me as ^bYour enemy?²⁵“Will You cause a ^adriven leaf to tremble?Or will You pursue the dry ^bchaff?²⁶“For You write ^abitter things against meAnd ^bmake me to possess the iniquities of my youth.²⁷“You ^aput my feet in the stocksAnd kept watch over all my paths;You ¹set a limit for the soles of my feet,²⁸While ¹I am decaying like a ^arotten thing,Like a garment that is moth-eaten.

If a Man Dies, Will He Live Again?

14“^aMan, who is born of woman,Is ¹short-lived and ^bfull of turmoil.²“^aLike a flower he comes forth and withers.He also flees like ^ba shadow and does not stand.³“You also ^aopen Your eyes on himAnd ^bbring ¹me into judgment with Yourself.⁴“^aWho can make the clean out of the unclean?No one!⁵“Since his days are determined,The ^anumber of his months is with You;And his limits You have ¹set so that he cannot pass.⁶“^aTurn Your gaze from him that he may cease from toil,Until he accepts his day like a hired man.⁷“For there is hope for a tree,When it is cut down, that it will change back sprouting again,And its shoots will not cease.⁸“Though its roots grow old in the groundAnd its stump dies in the dry soil,⁹At the scent of water it will flourishAnd put forth sprigs like a plant.¹⁰“But ^aman dies and lies prostrate.Man ^bbreathes his last, and where is he?¹¹“As ^awater ¹evaporates from the sea,And a river becomes parched and dried up,¹²So ^aman lies down and does not rise.Until the heavens are no longer,¹He will not awake nor be aroused out of ²his sleep.¹³“Oh that You would conceal me in Sheol,That You would hide me ^auntil Your anger returns to You,That You would set a limit for me and remember me!¹⁴“If a man dies, will he live again?All the days of my labor I will waitUntil my change comes.¹⁵“You will call, and I will answer You;You will long for ^athe work of Your hands.¹⁶“For now You ^anumber my steps,You do not ^bkeep watch over my sin.¹⁷“My transgression is ^asealed up in a bag,And You ¹cover up my iniquity.¹⁸“But the falling mountain ¹crumbles away,And the rock moves from its place;¹⁹Water wears away stones;Its torrents wash away the dust of the earth;So You ^amake man’s hope perish.²⁰“You forever overpower him and he ^agoes away;You alter his appearance and send him away.²¹“His sons achieve honor, but ^ahe does not know it;Or they become insignificant, but he does not perceive it.²²“But his flesh pains him,And he mourns only for himself.”

The Preaching of John the Baptist

3Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when ^aPontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and ^bHerod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, ²during the high priesthood of ^aAnnas and ^bCaiaphas, ^cthe word of God came to John, the son of Zechariah, in the wilderness. ³And he came into all ^athe district around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins; ⁴as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “^aThe voice of one crying in the wilderness,‘Make ready the way of the ¹Lord,Make His paths straight.

⁵‘^aEvery ravine will be filled,And every mountain and hill will be ¹brought low;The crooked will be straight,And the rough roads smooth.⁶^aAnd all ¹flesh will ^bsee the salvation of God.’”

⁷So he was saying to the crowds who were going out to be baptized by him, “^aYou brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? ⁸“Therefore bear fruits in keeping with repentance, and ^ado not begin to say ¹to yourselves, ‘^bWe have Abraham for our father,’ for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham. ⁹“But indeed the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore, ^aevery tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

¹⁰And the crowds were questioning him, saying, “^aThen what should we do?” ¹¹And he would answer and say to them, “The man who has two ¹tunics is to ^ashare with him who has none; and he who has food is to do likewise.” ¹²And ^atax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?” ¹³And he said to them, “¹Collect no more than what you have been ordered to.” ¹⁴And soldiers were also questioning him, saying, “What should we also do?” And he said to them, “Do not take money from anyone by force, or ^aextort anyone, and ^bbe content with your wages.”

¹⁵Now while the people were in a state of expectation and all were reasoning in their hearts about John, ^aas to whether he was the ¹Christ, ¹⁶^aJohn answered, saying to them all, “As for me, I baptize you with water, but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the strap of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. ¹⁷“His ^awinnowing fork is in His hand to thoroughly clear His threshing floor and to gather the wheat into His barn, but He will burn up the chaff with ^bunquenchable fire.”

¹⁸So with many other exhortations he proclaimed the gospel to the people. ¹⁹But when ^aHerod the tetrarch was reproved by him because of ^bHerodias, his brother’s wife, and because of all the wicked things which ^cHerod had done, ²⁰Herod also added this to them all: ^ahe locked John up in prison.

The Baptism of Jesus

²¹^aNow it happened that when all the people were being baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was ^bpraying, heaven was opened, ²²and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, “^aYou are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”

The Genealogy of Jesus

²³^aWhen He began His ministry, Jesus Himself was about thirty years of age, being, ¹as was supposed, the son of ^bJoseph, ²the son of ³Eli,

²⁴the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph, ²⁵the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of ¹Hesli, the son of Naggai, ²⁶the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda, ²⁷the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, ^athe son of Zerubbabel, the son of ¹Shealtiel, the son of Neri, ²⁸the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmadam, the son of Er, ²⁹the son of ¹Joshua, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, ³⁰the son of Simeon, the son of ¹Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim, ³¹the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David, ³²^athe son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of ¹Salmon, the son of ²Nahshon, ³³the son of Amminadab, the son of Admin, the son of ¹Ram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah, ³⁴the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, ^athe son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor, ³⁵the son of Serug, the son of ¹Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of ²Heber, the son of Shelah, ³⁶the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, ^athe son of Noah, the son of Lamech, ³⁷the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan, ³⁸the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

Yahweh Is Our Help and Our Shield

33^aSing for joy in Yahweh, O righteous ones;Praise is ^bbecoming to the upright.²Give thanks to Yahweh with the ^alyre;Sing praises to Him with a ^bharp of ten strings.³Sing to Him a ^anew song;Play skillfully with ^ba loud shout.⁴For the word of Yahweh ^ais upright,And all His work is done ^bin faithfulness.⁵He ^aloves righteousness and justice;The ^bearth is full of the lovingkindness of Yahweh.⁶By the ^aword of Yahweh the heavens were made,And ^bby the breath of His mouth ^call their host.⁷He gathers the ^awaters of the sea ¹as a heap;He lays up the deeps in storehouses.⁸Let ^aall the earth fear Yahweh;Let all the inhabitants of the world ^bstand in awe of Him.⁹For ^aHe spoke, and it was;He commanded, and it ¹stood.¹⁰Yahweh ^anullifies the counsel of the nations;He frustrates the thoughts of the peoples.¹¹The ^acounsel of Yahweh stands forever,The ^bthoughts of His heart from generation to generation.¹²Blessed is the ^anation whose God is Yahweh,The people whom He has ^bchosen for His own inheritance.¹³Yahweh ^alooks from heaven;He ^bsees all the sons of men;¹⁴From ^athe place of His habitation He gazesOn all the inhabitants of the earth,¹⁵He who ^aforms ¹the hearts of them all,He who ^bunderstands all their works.¹⁶^aThe king is not saved by a mighty army;A warrior is not delivered by great strength.¹⁷A ^ahorse is a false hope for salvation;Nor does it provide escape to anyone by its great strength.¹⁸Behold, ^athe eye of Yahweh is on those who fear Him,On those who ^bwait for His lovingkindness,¹⁹To ^adeliver their soul from deathAnd to keep them alive ^bin famine.²⁰Our soul ^ais patient for Yahweh;He is our ^bhelp and our shield.²¹For our ^aheart is glad in Him,Because we trust in His holy name.²²Let Your lovingkindness, O Yahweh, be upon us,As we wait for You.
