Job 15 - 16

Eliphaz Says Job’s Lips Answer Against Him

15Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
2Should a wise man answer with windy knowledgeaAnd fill his belly with the east wind?3Should he argue with a word that cannot be used,Or with speech which is not profitable?4Indeed, you annul reverent fearAnd cut off musing before God.5For ayour iniquity teaches your mouth,And you choose the tongue of bthe crafty.6Your aown mouth condemns you, and not I;And your own lips answer against you.7Were you the first man to be born,Or awere you brought forth before the hills?8Do you hear the asecret counsel of God,And cut down wisdom only unto yourself?9aWhat do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that is not with us?10Both the agray-haired and the aged are among us,Older than your father.11Are athe consolations of God too small for you,Even the bword spoken gently with you?12Why does your aheart take you away? And why do your eyes flash,13That you should turn your spirit against GodAnd allow such words to go out of your mouth?14What is man, that ahe should be pure,Or bhe who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?15Behold, He puts no faith in His aholy ones,And the bheavens are not pure in His sight;16How much less one who is aabominable and corrupt,Man, who bdrinks 1unrighteousness like water!17I will tell you, listen to me;And what I have beheld I will also recount;18What wise men have told,And have not concealed from atheir fathers,19To whom alone the land was given,And no stranger passed among them.20The wicked man writhes ain pain all his days,And 1numbered are the years bstored up for the ruthless.211Sounds of adread are in his ears;bWhile at peace the destroyer comes upon him.22He does not believe that he will areturn from darkness,And he is destined for bthe sword.23He wanders about for food, saying, ‘Where is it?’He knows that a day of adarkness is ready at his hand.24Distress and anguish terrify him; They overpower him like a king ready for the attack,25Because he has stretched out his hand against GodAnd amagnifies himself against 1the Almighty.26He rushes 1headlong at HimWith 2his massive shield.27For he has acovered his face with his fatAnd made his thighs heavy with flesh.28He has adwelt in desolate cities,In houses no one would inhabit,Which are destined to become 1ruins.29He awill not become rich, nor will his wealth endure; And his grain will not stretch out over the land.30He will anot be able to 1depart from darkness; The bflame will wither his shoots,And by cthe breath of His mouth he will depart.31Let him not abelieve in emptiness, deceiving himself; For emptiness will be his 1reward,32When ahis days are not yet fulfilled,And his palm bbranch is not green.33He will drop off his unripe grape like the vine,And will acast off his flower like the olive tree.34For the company of athe godless is barren,And fire consumes bthe tents of 1the corrupt.35They aconceive 1trouble and give birth to wickedness,And their 2belly prepares deception.”

Troublesome Comforters

16Then Job answered and said,
2I have heard many such things;1,aTroublesome comforters are you all.3Is there no end to awindy words?Or what pains you that you answer?4I too could speak like you,If your soul were in the place of my soul.I could compose words against youAnd ashake my head at you.5I could encourage you with my mouth,And the solace of my lips could lessen your pain.6If I speak, amy pain is not lessened,And if I cease, what will go forth from me?7But now He has aexhausted me;You have made bdesolate all my company.8You have shriveled me up,aIt has become a witness; And my bleanness rises up against me,It answers to my face.9His anger has atorn me and 1hunted me down;He has bgnashed at me with His teeth; My cadversary sharpens his eyes to look at me.10They have aopened their mouth wide at me;They have bstruck me on the cheek in reproach; They have cmassed themselves against me.11God hands me over to ruffiansAnd tosses me into the hands of the wicked.12I was at ease, but aHe shattered me,And He has grasped me by the neck and shaken me to pieces; He has also set me up as His btarget.13His aarrows surround me.Without mercy He splits my kidneys open;He pours out bmy gall on the ground.14He abreaks through me with breach after breach; He bruns at me like a warrior.15I have sewed asackcloth over my skinAnd bthrust my horn in the dust.16My face is flushed from aweeping,bAnd the shadow of death is on my eyelids,17Why?because there is no aviolence in my hands,And bmy prayer is pure.18O earth, do not cover my blood,And let there be no resting place for my cry.19Even now, behold, amy witness is in heaven,And my 1advocate is bon high.20My friends are my scoffers;aMy eye 1weeps to God.21O that a man might argue with GodAs a son of man with his neighbor!22For when a few years are past,I shall go the way aof no return.

Luke 4

The Temptation of Jesus

4aNow Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, breturned from the Jordan and was being led around 1by the Spirit in the wilderness 2for aforty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had finished, He was hungry. 3And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘aMan shall not live on bread alone.’”
5aAnd he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of 1,bthe world in a moment of time. 6And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this 1,adominion and 2its glory, bfor it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7Therefore if You 1worship before me, it shall all be Yours.” 8And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is written, ‘aYou shall worship the 1Lord your God and serve Him only.’”
9aAnd he led Him to Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here, 10for it is written, aHe will command His angels concerning You to guard You,’
11and, aOn their hands they will bear You up,Lest You strike Your foot against a stone.’”
12And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is said, ‘aYou shall not put the 1Lord your God to the test.’”
13And when the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

14And aJesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and bnews about Him spread through all the surrounding district. 15And He was ateaching in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

16And He came to aNazareth, where He had been brought up, and as was His custom, bHe entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and cstood up to read. 17And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the scroll and found the place where it was written,
18aThe Spirit of the 1Lord is upon Me,Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor.He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives,And recovery of sight to the blind,To set free those who are oppressed,19aTo proclaim the favorable year of the 1Lord.”
20And He aclosed the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and bsat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21And He began to say to them, Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your 1hearing.” 22And all were 1speaking well of Him and marveling at the 2gracious words which were coming forth from His lips, and they were saying, “aIs this not Joseph’s son?” 23And He said to them, No doubt you will quote this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we heard took place aat Capernaum, do also here in byour hometown.’” 24And He said, Truly I say to you, ano prophet is welcome in his hometown. 25But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel ain the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land, 26and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but aonly to 1Zarephath, in the land of bSidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, but aonly Naaman the Syrian.” 28And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things, 29and they stood up and adrove Him out of the city, and led Him to the edge of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw Him down the cliff. 30But apassing through their midst, He went on His way.

Jesus Casts Out an Unclean Demon

31And aHe came down to bCapernaum, a city of Galilee, and He was teaching them on the Sabbath; 32and athey were amazed at His teaching, for bHis 1message was with authority. 33And in the synagogue there was a man 1possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 341Let us alone! 2,aWhat do we have to do with You, Jesus the bNazarene? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—cthe Holy One of God!” 35But Jesus arebuked it, saying, “Be quiet and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst of the people, it came out of him without doing him any harm. 36And amazement came upon them all, and they were talking with one another saying, “What is 1this message? For awith authority and power He commands the unclean spirits and they come out.” 37And athe report about Him was spreading into every place in the surrounding district.

Peter’s Mother-in-Law and Many Others Healed

38aThen He stood up and left the synagogue, and entered Simon’s home. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was bsuffering from a high fever, and they asked Him 1to help her. 39And standing over her, He arebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she stood up and 1began waiting on them.
40aAnd while bthe sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him, and claying His hands on each one of them, He was dhealing them. 41And demons also were coming out of many, shouting and saying, “You are athe Son of God!” But brebuking them, He was cnot allowing them to speak, because they knew Him to be the 1Christ.
42aWhen day came, Jesus left and went to a secluded place; and the crowds were eagerly seeking for Him, and came to Him and tried to keep Him from going away from them. 43But He said to them, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also, afor I was sent for this purpose.”
44So He kept on preaching in the synagogues aof 1Judea.
