Job Seeks Hope

17“My spirit is broken; my days are extinguished;The ¹^,^agrave is ready for me.²“^aSurely mockers are with me,And my eye ¹gazes on their provocation.³“Establish, now, a pledge ^afor me with Yourself;Who is there that will clap my hand in pledge?⁴“For You have ^ahidden their heart from insight,Therefore You will not exalt them.⁵“He who ^ainforms against friends for a share of the spoil,The ^beyes of his children also will come to an end.⁶“But He has made me a ^abyword of the people,And I am ¹one at whom men ^bspit.⁷“My eye has also grown ^adim because of grief,And all my ^bmembers are as a shadow.⁸“The upright will be appalled at this,And the ^ainnocent will stir up himself against the godless.⁹“Nevertheless ^athe righteous will hold to his way,And ^bhe who has clean hands will grow mightier and mightier.¹⁰“But come again all of ¹you now,For I ^ado not find a wise man among you.¹¹“My ^adays are past; my plans are torn apart,Even the wishes of my heart.¹²“They make night into day, saying,‘The light is near,’ in the presence of darkness.¹³“If I hope for ^aSheol as my home,I ¹make my bed in the darkness;¹⁴If I call to the ^apit, ‘You are my father’;To the ^bworm, ‘my mother and my sister’;¹⁵Where now is ^amy hope?And who beholds my hope?¹⁶“¹Will it go down with me to Sheol?Shall we together ^ago down into the dust?”

Bildad Speaks of the Downfall of the Wicked

18Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said,

²“How long until you put an end to your words?Show understanding and then we can talk.³“Why are we ^aregarded as beasts,As dense in your eyes?⁴“O ¹you who tear yourself in your anger—For your sake is the earth to be forsaken,Or the rock to be moved from its place?⁵“Indeed, the ^alight of the wicked goes out,And the ¹flame of his fire gives no light.⁶“The light in his tent is ^adarkened,And his lamp goes out above him.⁷“His ¹vigorous stride is shortened,And his ^aown counsel brings him down.⁸“For he is ^athrown into the net by his own feet,And he steps on the netting.⁹“A snare seizes him by the heel,And a device snaps shut on him.¹⁰“A rope for him is hidden in the ground,And a trap for him on the path.¹¹“All around ^aterrors frighten him,And ^bharass him at every step.¹²“His vigor is ^afamished,And disaster is ready at his side.¹³“The firstborn of death eats parts of his skin;It ^aeats parts of him.¹⁴“He is ^atorn from ¹the security of his tent,And ²they march him in step before the king of ^bterrors.¹⁵“¹There dwells in his tent nothing of his;^aBrimstone is scattered on his abode.¹⁶“His ^aroots are dried below,And his ^bbranch is cut off above.¹⁷“^aMemory of him perishes from the earth,And he has no name abroad.¹⁸“¹He is driven from light ^ainto darkness,And ^bchased from the inhabited world.¹⁹“He has neither ^aoffspring nor posterity among his people,Nor any survivor where he sojourned.²⁰“Those ¹in the west are appalled at ^ahis ²fate,And those ³in the east are seized with horror.²¹“Surely such are the ^adwellings of the unjust,And this is the place of him who does not know God.”

The First Disciples

5^aNow it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing at the edge of ^bthe lake of Gennesaret; ²and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake, and the fishermen, having gotten out of them, were washing their nets. ³^aAnd He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down and began teaching the crowds from the boat. ⁴And when He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and ^alet down your nets for a catch.” ⁵Simon answered and said, “^aMaster, ^bwe labored all night and caught nothing, but at Your word, I will let down the nets.” ⁶And when they had done this, ^athey enclosed a great quantity of fish. And their nets began to break; ⁷so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink. ⁸But when Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!” ⁹For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken, ¹⁰and ¹James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon, were also likewise amazed. And Jesus said to Simon, “^aDo not fear, from now on you will be ^bcatching men.” ¹¹And when they had brought their boats to land, ^athey left everything and followed Him.

Jesus Heals a Leper

¹²^aAnd it happened that while He was in one of the cities, behold, there was a man ¹covered with leprosy; and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” ¹³And He stretched out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And immediately the leprosy left him. ¹⁴And He directed him to tell no one, “But go and ^ashow yourself to the priest and make an offering for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” ¹⁵But ^athe news about Him was spreading even farther, and large crowds were gathering to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses. ¹⁶But He Himself would often slip away ¹to the desolate regions and ^apray.

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

¹⁷And it happened that ¹one day He was teaching; and ^athere were some Pharisees and ^bteachers of the law sitting there, who had ^ccome from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem, and ^dthe power of the Lord was present for Him to perform healing. ¹⁸^aAnd behold, some men were carrying on a stretcher a man who was paralyzed; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down before Him. ¹⁹But not finding any way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on ^athe roof and let him down ^bthrough the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus. ²⁰And seeing their faith, He said, “¹Friend, ^ayour sins are forgiven you.” ²¹The scribes and the Pharisees ^abegan to reason, saying, “^bWho is this who speaks blasphemies? ^cWho can forgive sins, but God alone?” ²²But Jesus, ¹knowing their reasonings, answered and said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts? ²³“Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins have been forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? ²⁴“But, so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,”—He said to the ^aparalytic—“I say to you, get up, and, picking up your stretcher, go home.” ²⁵And immediately he rose up before them, and picked up what he had been lying on, and went home ^aglorifying God. ²⁶And astonishment seized them all and they began ^aglorifying God; and they were filled ^bwith fear, saying, “We have seen remarkable things today.”

Levi and Sinners Called

²⁷^aAnd after that He went out and noticed a tax collector named ¹^,^bLevi sitting in the tax office, and He said to him, “Follow Me.” ²⁸And he ^aleft everything behind, and rose up and began to follow Him.

²⁹And ^aLevi gave a big reception for Him in his house; and there was a great crowd of ^btax collectors and other people who were reclining at the table with them. ³⁰^aAnd the Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling at His disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and ¹sinners?” ³¹And Jesus answered and said to them, “^aIt is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick. ³²“I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”

³³And they said to Him, “^aThe disciples of John often fast and offer prayers, the disciples of the Pharisees also do likewise, but Yours eat and drink.” ³⁴And Jesus said to them, “Can you make the ¹attendants of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? ³⁵“^aBut the days will come; and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.” ³⁶And He was also telling them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will both tear the new and the piece from the new will not match the old. ³⁷“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined. ³⁸“But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. ³⁹“And no one, after drinking old wine wishes for new; for he says, ‘The old is good enough.’”

Yahweh Be Magnified

Of David.

Contend, O Yahweh, with those who ^acontend with me;Fight against those who ^bfight against me.²Take hold of ¹^,^ashield and large shieldAnd rise up for ^bmy help.³Draw also the spear and ¹the battle-axe to meet those who pursue me;Say to my soul, “I am ^ayour salvation.”⁴Let those be ^aashamed and dishonored who seek my ¹life;Let those who devise evil against me be ^bturned back and humiliated.⁵Let them be ^alike chaff before the wind,With the angel of Yahweh driving them on.⁶Let their way be dark and ^aslippery,With the angel of Yahweh pursuing them.⁷For ^awithout cause they ^bhid their net for me;Without cause they dug a ¹pit for my soul.⁸Let ^adestruction, which he does not know, come upon him,And ^blet the net, which he hid, catch him;Let him fall into it in ^cdestruction.⁹And my soul shall ^arejoice in Yahweh;It shall ^bbe joyful in His salvation.¹⁰All my ^abones will say, “Yahweh, ^bwho is like You,Who delivers the afflicted from him ^cwho is too strong for him,And ^dthe afflicted and the needy from him who robs him?”¹¹^aMalicious witnesses rise up,Who ask me of things that I do not know.¹²They ^arepay me evil for good,It is bereavement to my soul.¹³But as for me, ^awhen they were sick, my ^bclothing was sackcloth;I ^chumbled my soul with fasting,And my ^dprayer kept returning to my bosom.¹⁴I walked about as though it were my friend or brother;I ^abowed down ¹mourning, as one who sorrows for a mother.¹⁵But ^aat my ¹stumbling they were glad and gathered themselves together;The ²^,^bsmiters whom I did not know gathered together against me,They ^ctore at me and never were silent.¹⁶Amongst the godless jesters at a feast,They ^agnashed at me with their teeth.¹⁷Lord, ^ahow long will You look on?Bring back my soul ^bfrom their ravages,My ^conly life from the lions.¹⁸I will ^agive You thanks in the great assembly;I will ^bpraise You among a mighty people.¹⁹^aLet those who are wrongfully ^bmy enemies not be glad over me;Nor let those ^cwho hate me without cause ¹^,^dwink maliciously.²⁰For they do not speak peace,But they devise ^adeceitful words against those who are quiet in the land.²¹They ^aopened their mouth wide against me;They said, “^bAha, aha, our eyes have seen it!”²²^aYou have seen it, O Yahweh, ^bdo not keep silent;O Lord, ^cdo not be far from me.²³^aStir up Yourself, and awake to my justiceAnd to my cause, my God and my Lord.²⁴^aJudge me, O Yahweh my God, according to Your righteousness,And ^bdo not let them be glad over me.²⁵Do not let them say in their heart, “^aAha, our desire!”Do not let them say, “We have ^bswallowed him up!”²⁶Let ^athose be ashamed and humiliated altogether who are glad at the evil done to me;Let those be ^bclothed with shame and dishonor who ^cmagnify themselves over me.²⁷Let them ^ashout for joy and be glad, who delight in ^bmy righteousness;And ^clet them say continually, “Yahweh be magnified,Who ^ddelights in the peace of His slave.”²⁸And ^amy tongue shall utter Your righteousnessAnd Your praise all day long.
