Job 27 - 28

I Hold Fast My Righteousness

27Then Job continued to lift up his 1,adiscourse and said,
2“As God lives, awho has removed my justice,And the Almighty, bwho has embittered my soul,3For as long as breath is in me,And the aspirit from God is in my nostrils,4My lips certainly will not speak unrighteousness,Nor will amy tongue utter deceit.5“Far be it from me that I should declare you right;Till I breathe my last aI will not remove my integrity from me.6“I ahold fast my righteousness and will not let it go.My heart does not reproach any of my days.7“May my enemy be as the wickedAnd the one who rises against me as the unjust.8“For what is athe hope of the godless 1when he is cut off,When God requires bhis 2soul?9“Will God ahear his cryWhen bdistress comes upon him?10“Will he take adelight in the Almighty? Will he call on God at all times?11“I will instruct you in the 1power of God;What is with the Almighty I will not conceal.12“Behold, all of you have seen it;Why then do you speak with utter vanity?13“This is athe portion of a wicked man from God,And the inheritance which the bruthless receive from the Almighty.14“Though his sons are many, 1they are destined afor the sword; And his boffspring will not be satisfied with bread.15“His survivors will be buried because of the plague,And 1their awidows will not be able to weep.16“Though he piles up silver like dustAnd prepares garments as plentiful as the clay,17He may prepare it, abut the righteous will wear it,And the innocent will divide the silver.18“He has built his ahouse like the 1moth,Or as a hut which the watchman has made.19“He lies down rich, but never 1again;He opens his eyes, and ait is no longer.20“aTerrors overtake him like many waters;A tempest steals him away bin the night.21“The east awind carries him away, and he goes,And it whirls him baway from his place.22“For it will hurl at him awithout sparing; He will surely try to bflee from its 1power.23“Men will clap their hands at himAnd will ahiss him from his place.

Where Can Wisdom Be Found?

28“1Surely there is a 2mine for silver,And a place 3where they refine for gold.2“Iron is taken from the dust,And copper is smelted from rock.3“Man puts an end to darkness,And ato the farthest limit he searches outThe rock in thick darkness and shadow of death.4“He 1sinks a shaft far from 2habitation,Forgotten by the foot; They hang and swing to and fro far from men.5“The earth, from it comes food,And underneath it is overturned as fire.6“Its rocks are the 1source of sapphires,And its dust contains gold.7“The path no bird of prey knows,Nor has the falcon’s eye caught sight of it.8“The 1proud beasts have not trodden it,Nor has the fierce lion passed over it.9“He sends his hand forth to the flint; He overturns the mountains at the 1base.10“He breaks out channels through the rocks,And his eye sees anything precious.11“He dams up the streams from 1flowing,And what is hidden he brings out to the light.12“But awhere can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?13“aMan does not know its worth,And it is not found in the land of the living.14“The deep says, ‘It is not in me’;And the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’15“aPure gold cannot be given in place of it,Nor can silver be weighed as its price.16“It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir,In precious onyx or sapphire.17“aGold or glass cannot meet its worth,Nor can it be exchanged for articles of fine gold.18“Coral and crystal are not to be mentioned; And the acquisition of awisdom is above that of pearls.19“The topaz of 1Ethiopia cannot meet its worth,Nor can it be valued in apure gold.20“aWhere then does wisdom come from? And where is the place of understanding?21“Thus it is hidden from the eyes of all livingAnd concealed from the birds of the sky.22“1,aAbaddon and Death say,‘With our ears we have heard a report of it.’23“aGod understands its way,And He knows its place.24“For He alooks to the ends of the earthAnd sees everything under the heavens.25“When He set aweight to the windAnd bmeted out the waters by measure,26When He set a alimit for the rainAnd a course for the bthunderbolt,27Then He saw it and recounted it;He established it and also searched it out.28“So He said to man, ‘Behold, the afear of the Lord, that is wisdom; And to turn away from evil is understanding.’”

Luke 10

The Seventy Sent Out

10Now after this athe Lord appointed 1seventy bothers, and sent them cin pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. 2And He was saying to them, “aThe harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. 3“Go! aBehold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4“aCarry no money belt, no bag, no sandals, and greet no one on the way. 5“Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house.’ 6“And if a 1man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him, but if not, it will return to you. 7“Stay in 1that house, eating and drinking 2what they give you; for athe laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not keep moving from house to house. 8“And whatever city you enter and they receive you, aeat what is set before you; 9and heal those in it who are sick, and say to them, ‘aThe kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10“But in whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11‘aEven the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off against you; yet know this, that bthe kingdom of God is at hand.’ 12“I say to you, ait will be more tolerable in that day for bSodom than for that city.
13“aWoe to you, bChorazin! Woe to you, cBethsaida! For if the 1miracles had been performed in dTyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago, sitting in 2,esackcloth and ashes. 14“But it will be more tolerable for aTyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you. 15“And you, aCapernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades!
16“aThe one who listens to you listens to Me, and bthe one who rejects you rejects Me. And he who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”

The Joyful Results

17Now the 1seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even athe demons are subject to us in Your name.” 18And He said to them, “I was watching aSatan fall from heaven like lightning. 19“Behold, I have given you authority to atread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. 20“Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that ayour names are recorded in heaven.”
21aAt that very 1time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I 2praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. 22“aAll things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and bno one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”
23aAnd turning to the disciples, He said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see, 24for I say to you, that many prophets and kings wished to see the things which you see, and did not see them, and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear them.”

The Good Samaritan

25aAnd behold, a bscholar of the Law stood up and was putting Him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26And He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27And he answered and said, “aYou shall love the 1Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” 28And He said to him, “You have answered correctly; ado this and you will live.” 29But wishing ato justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30Jesus replied and said, “A man was agoing down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and 1beat him, and went away leaving him half dead. 31“And a priest happened to be going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32“Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33“But a aSamaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him, and when he saw him, he felt compassion. 34“And he came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them, and he put him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35“And on the next day he took out two 1denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.’ 36“Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers’ hands?” 37And he said, “The one who showed mercy toward him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do 1the same.”

Martha and Mary

38Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named aMartha welcomed Him into her home. 39And she had a sister called aMary, who was also bseated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word. 40But aMartha was distracted with 1all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the 2preparations alone? Then tell her to help me.” 41But the Lord answered and said to her, “aMartha, Martha, you are bworried and bothered about so many things, 42abut only one thing is necessary, for bMary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

Psalm 40

The One Who Rescues Me

40
For the choir director. Of David. A Psalm.
I ahoped 1earnestly for Yahweh; And He inclined to me and bheard my cry for help.
2He brought me up out of the apit of destruction, out of the 1miry clay,And bHe set my feet upon a high rock, cHe established my steps.3He put a anew song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;Many will bsee and fearAnd will trust in Yahweh.4How ablessed is the man who has made Yahweh his trust,And bhas not 1turned to the proud, nor to those who cstray into falsehood.5Many, O Yahweh my God, are athe wondrous deeds You have done,And Your bthoughts toward us;There is none to compare with You.I would declare and speak of them,But they care too numerous to recount.61,aSacrifice and meal offering 2You have not desired; My ears You have 3opened;Burnt offering and sin offering You have not required.7Then I said, “Behold, I come;In the scroll of the book it is 1written of me.8“aI desire to do Your will, O my God;bYour law is within my inner being.”9I aproclaim good news of righteousness in the great assembly;Behold, I do bnot restrain my lips,O Yahweh, cYou know.10I do anot conceal Your righteousness within my heart;I bspeak of Your faithfulness and Your salvation;I do not hide Your lovingkindness and Your truth from the great assembly.11You, O Yahweh, will not withhold Your compassion from me;1Your alovingkindness and Your truth will continually guard me.12For evils beyond number have asurrounded me;My biniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see; They are cmore numerous than the hairs of my head,And my dheart has 1failed me.13aBe pleased, O Yahweh, to deliver me;Make bhaste, O Yahweh, to help me.14Let those be aashamed and humiliated togetherWho bseek my 1life to sweep it away;Let those be turned back and dishonoredWho delight in 2evil against me.15Let those abe 1appalled because of their shameWho bsay to me, “Aha, aha!”16aLet all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;Let those who love Your salvation bsay continually,“Yahweh be magnified!”17As for me, aI am afflicted and needy,1,bMay the Lord think of me.You are my help and the One who rescues me;Do not delay, O my God.
