I Hold Fast My Righteousness

27Then Job continued to lift up his ¹^,^adiscourse and said,

²“As God lives, ^awho has removed my justice,And the Almighty, ^bwho has embittered my soul,³For as long as breath is in me,And the ^aspirit from God is in my nostrils,⁴My lips certainly will not speak unrighteousness,Nor will ^amy tongue utter deceit.⁵“Far be it from me that I should declare you right;Till I breathe my last ^aI will not remove my integrity from me.⁶“I ^ahold fast my righteousness and will not let it go.My heart does not reproach any of my days.⁷“May my enemy be as the wickedAnd the one who rises against me as the unjust.⁸“For what is ^athe hope of the godless ¹when he is cut off,When God requires ^bhis ²soul?⁹“Will God ^ahear his cryWhen ^bdistress comes upon him?¹⁰“Will he take ^adelight in the Almighty?Will he call on God at all times?¹¹“I will instruct you in the ¹power of God;What is with the Almighty I will not conceal.¹²“Behold, all of you have seen it;Why then do you speak with utter vanity?¹³“This is ^athe portion of a wicked man from God,And the inheritance which the ^bruthless receive from the Almighty.¹⁴“Though his sons are many, ¹they are destined ^afor the sword;And his ^boffspring will not be satisfied with bread.¹⁵“His survivors will be buried because of the plague,And ¹their ^awidows will not be able to weep.¹⁶“Though he piles up silver like dustAnd prepares garments as plentiful as the clay,¹⁷He may prepare it, ^abut the righteous will wear it,And the innocent will divide the silver.¹⁸“He has built his ^ahouse like the ¹moth,Or as a hut which the watchman has made.¹⁹“He lies down rich, but never ¹again;He opens his eyes, and ^ait is no longer.²⁰“^aTerrors overtake him like many waters;A tempest steals him away ^bin the night.²¹“The east ^awind carries him away, and he goes,And it whirls him ^baway from his place.²²“For it will hurl at him ^awithout sparing;He will surely try to ^bflee from its ¹power.²³“Men will clap their hands at himAnd will ^ahiss him from his place.

Where Can Wisdom Be Found?

28“¹Surely there is a ²mine for silver,And a place ³where they refine for gold.²“Iron is taken from the dust,And copper is smelted from rock.³“Man puts an end to darkness,And ^ato the farthest limit he searches outThe rock in thick darkness and shadow of death.⁴“He ¹sinks a shaft far from ²habitation,Forgotten by the foot;They hang and swing to and fro far from men.⁵“The earth, from it comes food,And underneath it is overturned as fire.⁶“Its rocks are the ¹source of sapphires,And its dust contains gold.⁷“The path no bird of prey knows,Nor has the falcon’s eye caught sight of it.⁸“The ¹proud beasts have not trodden it,Nor has the fierce lion passed over it.⁹“He sends his hand forth to the flint;He overturns the mountains at the ¹base.¹⁰“He breaks out channels through the rocks,And his eye sees anything precious.¹¹“He dams up the streams from ¹flowing,And what is hidden he brings out to the light.¹²“But ^awhere can wisdom be found?And where is the place of understanding?¹³“^aMan does not know its worth,And it is not found in the land of the living.¹⁴“The deep says, ‘It is not in me’;And the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’¹⁵“^aPure gold cannot be given in place of it,Nor can silver be weighed as its price.¹⁶“It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir,In precious onyx or sapphire.¹⁷“^aGold or glass cannot meet its worth,Nor can it be exchanged for articles of fine gold.¹⁸“Coral and crystal are not to be mentioned;And the acquisition of ^awisdom is above that of pearls.¹⁹“The topaz of ¹Ethiopia cannot meet its worth,Nor can it be valued in ^apure gold.²⁰“^aWhere then does wisdom come from?And where is the place of understanding?²¹“Thus it is hidden from the eyes of all livingAnd concealed from the birds of the sky.²²“¹^,^aAbaddon and Death say,‘With our ears we have heard a report of it.’²³“^aGod understands its way,And He knows its place.²⁴“For He ^alooks to the ends of the earthAnd sees everything under the heavens.²⁵“When He set ^aweight to the windAnd ^bmeted out the waters by measure,²⁶When He set a ^alimit for the rainAnd a course for the ^bthunderbolt,²⁷Then He saw it and recounted it;He established it and also searched it out.²⁸“So He said to man, ‘Behold, the ^afear of the Lord, that is wisdom;And to turn away from evil is understanding.’”

The Seventy Sent Out

10Now after this ^athe Lord appointed ¹seventy ^bothers, and sent them ^cin pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. ²And He was saying to them, “^aThe harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. ³“Go! ^aBehold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. ⁴“^aCarry no money belt, no bag, no sandals, and greet no one on the way. ⁵“Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house.’ ⁶“And if a ¹man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him, but if not, it will return to you. ⁷“Stay in ¹that house, eating and drinking ²what they give you; for ^athe laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not keep moving from house to house. ⁸“And whatever city you enter and they receive you, ^aeat what is set before you; ⁹and heal those in it who are sick, and say to them, ‘^aThe kingdom of God has come near to you.’ ¹⁰“But in whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, ¹¹‘^aEven the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off against you; yet know this, that ^bthe kingdom of God is at hand.’ ¹²“I say to you, ^ait will be more tolerable in that day for ^bSodom than for that city.

¹³“^aWoe to you, ^bChorazin! Woe to you, ^cBethsaida! For if the ¹miracles had been performed in ^dTyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago, sitting in ²^,^esackcloth and ashes. ¹⁴“But it will be more tolerable for ^aTyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you. ¹⁵“And you, ^aCapernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades!

¹⁶“^aThe one who listens to you listens to Me, and ^bthe one who rejects you rejects Me. And he who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”

The Joyful Results

¹⁷Now the ¹seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even ^athe demons are subject to us in Your name.” ¹⁸And He said to them, “I was watching ^aSatan fall from heaven like lightning. ¹⁹“Behold, I have given you authority to ^atread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. ²⁰“Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that ^ayour names are recorded in heaven.”

²¹^aAt that very ¹time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I ²praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. ²²“^aAll things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and ^bno one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”

²³^aAnd turning to the disciples, He said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see, ²⁴for I say to you, that many prophets and kings wished to see the things which you see, and did not see them, and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear them.”

The Good Samaritan

²⁵^aAnd behold, a ^bscholar of the Law stood up and was putting Him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” ²⁶And He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” ²⁷And he answered and said, “^aYou shall love the ¹Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” ²⁸And He said to him, “You have answered correctly; ^ado this and you will live.” ²⁹But wishing ^ato justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” ³⁰Jesus replied and said, “A man was ^agoing down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and ¹beat him, and went away leaving him half dead. ³¹“And a priest happened to be going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. ³²“Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. ³³“But a ^aSamaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him, and when he saw him, he felt compassion. ³⁴“And he came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them, and he put him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. ³⁵“And on the next day he took out two ¹denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.’ ³⁶“Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers’ hands?” ³⁷And he said, “The one who showed mercy toward him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do ¹the same.”

Martha and Mary

³⁸Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named ^aMartha welcomed Him into her home. ³⁹And she had a sister called ^aMary, who was also ^bseated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word. ⁴⁰But ^aMartha was distracted with ¹all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the ²preparations alone? Then tell her to help me.” ⁴¹But the Lord answered and said to her, “^aMartha, Martha, you are ^bworried and bothered about so many things, ⁴²^abut only one thing is necessary, for ^bMary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

The One Who Rescues Me

I ^ahoped ¹earnestly for Yahweh;And He inclined to me and ^bheard my cry for help.²He brought me up out of the ^apit of destruction, out of the ¹miry clay,And ^bHe set my feet upon a high rock, ^cHe established my steps.³He put a ^anew song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;Many will ^bsee and fearAnd will trust in Yahweh.⁴How ^ablessed is the man who has made Yahweh his trust,And ^bhas not ¹turned to the proud, nor to those who ^cstray into falsehood.⁵Many, O Yahweh my God, are ^athe wondrous deeds You have done,And Your ^bthoughts toward us;There is none to compare with You.I would declare and speak of them,But they ^care too numerous to recount.⁶¹^,^aSacrifice and meal offering ²You have not desired;My ears You have ³opened;Burnt offering and sin offering You have not required.⁷Then I said, “Behold, I come;In the scroll of the book it is ¹written of me.⁸“^aI desire to do Your will, O my God;^bYour law is within my inner being.”⁹I ^aproclaim good news of righteousness in the great assembly;Behold, I do ^bnot restrain my lips,O Yahweh, ^cYou know.¹⁰I do ^anot conceal Your righteousness within my heart;I ^bspeak of Your faithfulness and Your salvation;I do not hide Your lovingkindness and Your truth from the great assembly.¹¹You, O Yahweh, will not withhold Your compassion from me;¹Your ^alovingkindness and Your truth will continually guard me.¹²For evils beyond number have ^asurrounded me;My ^biniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see;They are ^cmore numerous than the hairs of my head,And my ^dheart has ¹failed me.¹³^aBe pleased, O Yahweh, to deliver me;Make ^bhaste, O Yahweh, to help me.¹⁴Let those be ^aashamed and humiliated togetherWho ^bseek my ¹life to sweep it away;Let those be turned back and dishonoredWho delight in ²evil against me.¹⁵Let those ^abe ¹appalled because of their shameWho ^bsay to me, “Aha, aha!”¹⁶^aLet all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;Let those who love Your salvation ^bsay continually,“Yahweh be magnified!”¹⁷As for me, ^aI am afflicted and needy,¹^,^bMay the Lord think of me.You are my help and the One who rescues me;Do not delay, O my God.
