Job 29 - 30

Job Continues His Discourse

29And Job continued to lift up his 1,adiscourse and said,
2Oh that I were as in months gone by,As in the days when God akept me,3When aHis lamp shone over my head,And bby His light I walked through darkness,4As I was in 1the prime of my days,When the aintimate counsel with God was over my tent,5When 1the Almighty was yet with me,And my children were around me,6When my steps were bathed in abutter,And the brock poured out for me streams of oil!7When I went out to athe gate of the city,When I 1took my seat in the square,8The young men saw me and hid,And the old men arose and stood.9The princes astopped talkingAnd bput their hands on their mouths;10The voice of the nobles was ahidden away,And their btongue clung to their palate.11For athe ear heard, and it called me blessed,And the eye saw, and it gave witness of me,12Because I provided escape for athe afflicted who cried for help,And the borphan who had no helper.13The blessing of the one aready to perish came upon me,And I made the bwidow’s heart sing for joy.14I aclothed myself with righteousness, and it clothed me;My justice was like a robe and a turban.15I was aeyes to the blindAnd feet to the lame.16I was a father to athe needy,And I searched out the case which I did not know.17I abroke the fangs of the unjustAnd snatched the prey from his teeth.18Then I 1said, ‘I will breathe my last 2in my nest,And I shall multiply my days as the sand.19My aroot is spread out to the waters,And bdew lies all night on my branch.20My glory is ever new with me,And my abow is renewed in my hand.’21To me athey listened and waited,And kept silent for my counsel.22After my words they did not aspeak again,And bmy speech dropped on them.23They waited for me as for the rain,And opened their mouth as for the 1late rain.24I laughed with them as they could not believe it,And the light of my face they did not cast down.25I chose a way for them and sat as atheir head,And dwelt as a king among the troops,As one who bcomforted the mourners.30But now those younger than I alaugh at me,Whose fathers I rejected even to put with the dogs of my flock.2Indeed, what good was the strength of their hands to me?Vigor had perished from them.3From want and famine they are gaunt,Who gnaw the dry ground by night in destruction and desolation,4Who pluck 1mallow by the bushes,And whose food is the root of the broom tree.5They are driven from the community; They shout against them as against a thief,6So that they dwell in the slopes of the 1valleys,In holes of the dust and of the rocks.7Among the bushes they 1cry out;Under the nettles they are gathered together.81Wicked fools, even 2those without a name,They were scourged from the land.9And now I have become their mocking asong;I have even become a btaunting word to them.10They abhor me and keep a distance from me,And they do not 1hold back from aspitting at my face.11Because 1He has loosed 2His 3bowstring and aafflicted me,They have thrust aside btheir bridle before me.12On the right hand their 1brood arises; They athrust aside my feet band build up against me their ways to disaster.13They abreak up my path; They profit 1from my destruction; They have no helper.14As through a wide breach they come,1Amid the storm they roll on.15aTerrors are turned against me;They pursue my nobility as the wind,And my hope for salvation has passed away blike a cloud.16And now amy soul is poured out 1within me;Days of affliction have seized me.17At night it pierces amy bones 1within me,And my gnawing pains take no rest.18By a great force my garment is adistorted; It seizes me about as the collar of my tunic.19He has cast me into the amire,And I have become like dust and ashes.20I acry out to You for help, but You do not answer me;I stand up, and You carefully consider how to be against me.21You have 1become cruel to me;With the might of Your hand You ahunted me down.22You alift me up to the wind and cause me to ride; And You melt me away in a storm.23For I know that You awill bring me to deathAnd to the bhouse of meeting for all living.24Yet does not one in a heap of ruins stretch out his hand,Or, in his upheaval, is there a acry for help because of them?25Have I not awept for the 1one whose life is hard? Was not my soul grieved for bthe needy?26When I ahoped for good, then evil came; When I waited for light, bthen thick darkness came.271I am boiling awithin and cannot be silent;Days of affliction confront me.28I go about adarkened but not by the sun;I stand up in the assembly and bcry out for help.29I have become a brother to ajackalsAnd a companion of ostriches.30My askin turns black 1on me,And my bbones burn with 2fever.31Therefore my aharp 1is turned to mourning,And my flute to the sound of those who weep.

Luke 11

The Lord’s Prayer

11And it happened that while 1Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.” 2And He said to them, aWhen you pray, say: 1Father, hallowed be Your name.Your kingdom come.
3Give us aeach day our 1daily bread.4And forgive us our sins,For we ourselves also forgive everyone who ais indebted to us.And lead us not into temptation.’”
5Then He said to them, Which of you has a friend and will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, 6for a friend of mine has come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7and from inside he answers and says, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been shut and my children 1and I are in bed; I cannot rise up and give you anything. 8I tell you, even though he will not arise and give him anything because he is his friend, yet abecause of his 1persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs.
9So I say to you, 1,aask, and it will be given to you; 2seek, and you will find; 3knock, and it will be opened to you. 10For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened. 11But what father among you, if his son asks for a 1fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish? 12Or, if his son asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13aIf you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your 1heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”

A Kingdom Divided

14aAnd He was casting out a demon, and it was mute. Now it happened that when the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the crowds marveled. 15But some of them said, “He casts out demons aby bBeelzebul, the ruler of the demons.” 16And others, testing Him, awere seeking from Him 1a sign from heaven. 17aBut He knew their thoughts and said to them, 1Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a house divided against 2itself falls. 18But if aSatan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by bBeelzebul. 19And if I by aBeelzebul cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? For this reason, they will be your judges. 20But if I cast out demons by the afinger of God, then bthe kingdom of God has come upon you. 21When 1a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are 2undisturbed. 22But when someone stronger than he attacks him and overpowers him, he takes away from him all his armor on which he had relied and distributes his plunder. 23aHe who is not with Me is against Me and he who does not gather with Me, scatters.
24aWhen the unclean spirit goes out of 1a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order. 26Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and live there, and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.”
27Now it happened that while 1Jesus was saying these things, one of the women in the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “aBlessed is the womb that bore You and the breasts at which You nursed.” 28But He said, “On the contrary, blessed are athose who hear the word of God and keep it.”

The Sign of Jonah

29Now as the crowds were increasing, He began to say, aThis generation is a wicked generation; it bseeks 1a sign, and yet no 2sign will be given to it but the 3sign of Jonah. 30For just as aJonah became 1a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31The aQueen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon. And behold, something greater than Solomon is here. 32The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because athey repented at the preaching of Jonah. And behold, something greater than Jonah is here.
33aNo one, after lighting a lamp, puts it away in a cellar nor under a basket, but on the lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34aThe eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is 1clear, your whole body also is full of light, but when it is 2bad, your body also is full of darkness. 35Therefore watch out that the light in you is not darkness. 36If therefore your whole body is full of light, with no dark part in it, it will be wholly illumined, as when the lamp illumines you with its rays.”

Woes to the Pharisees and Lawyers

37Now when He had spoken, a Pharisee *asked Him to have a meal with him. And He went in and reclined at the table. 38But when the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that He had not first 1,aceremonially washed before the 2meal. 39But athe Lord said to him, Now byou Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but 1inside of you, you are full of robbery and wickedness. 40aYou foolish ones, did not He who made the outside make the inside also? 41But agive that which is within as charity, and 1then all things are bclean for you.
42aBut woe to you Pharisees! For you bpay tithe of mint and rue and every kind of garden herb, and yet disregard justice and the love of God, but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. 43Woe to you Pharisees! For you alove the best seat in the synagogues and the respectful greetings in the marketplaces. 44aWoe to you! For you are like 1concealed tombs, and the people who walk over them are unaware of it.
45Now one of the ascholars of the Law answered and said to Him, “Teacher, when You say these things, You insult us too.” 46But He said, Woe to you ascholars of the Law as well! For byou weigh men down with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves will not even touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47aWoe to you! For you build the 1tombs of the prophets, but your fathers killed them. 48So you are witnesses and approve the deeds of your fathers; because it was they who killed them, and you build their tombs. 49For this reason also athe wisdom of God said, ‘bI will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and some they will 1persecute, 50so that the blood of all the prophets, shed asince the foundation of the world, may be 1charged against this generation, 51from athe blood of Abel to bthe blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the house of God; yes, I tell you, it shall be 1charged against this generation.’ 52Woe to you, ascholars of the Law! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; byou yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering.”
53And when He left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile and to question Him closely on many subjects, 54aplotting bto catch 1Him in something He might say.

Psalm 41

O Yahweh, Be Gracious to Me

41
For the choir director. A Psalm of David.
How blessed is he who aconsiders the 1poor;Yahweh will provide him escape bin a day of 2calamity.
2Yahweh will akeep him and keep him alive,And he shall be bblessed upon the earth; And cdo not give him over to the desire of his enemies.3Yahweh will sustain him upon his sickbed; In his illness, You 1restore him to health.4As for me, I said, “O Yahweh, be gracious to me;aHeal my soul, for bI have sinned against You.”5My enemies aspeak evil against me,When will he die, and his name perish?”6And 1when he comes to see me, he aspeaks 2worthlessness;His heart gathers wickedness to itself; When he goes outside, he speaks it.7All who hate me whisper together against me;Against me, they adevise for me 1calamity, saying,8A vile thing is poured out 1upon him,That when he lies down, he will anot rise up again.”9Even my aclose friend in whom I trusted,Who ate my bread,Has lifted up his heel against me.10But You, O Yahweh, be gracious to me and araise me up,That I may repay them.11By this I know that aYou delight in me,Because bmy enemy makes no shout in triumph over me.12As for me, aYou uphold me in my integrity,And You make me bstand firm in Your presence forever.13aBlessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel,From everlasting to everlasting.Amen and Amen.
