Elihu Speaks of God’s Voice

37“At this also my heart trembles,And leaps from its place.²“¹Listen closely to the ^athunder of His voice,And the rumbling that goes out from His mouth.³“Under the whole heaven He lets it loose,And His ¹lightning to the ^aends of the earth.⁴“After it, a voice roars;He thunders with His majestic voice,And He does not restrain ¹the lightnings when His voice is heard.⁵“God ^athunders with His voice marvelously,Doing ^bgreat things which we do not know.⁶“For to ^athe snow He says, ‘Fall on the earth,’And to the ^bdownpour of rain and the downpour of rains, ‘Be strong.’⁷“He ^aseals the hand of every man,That ^ball men may know His work.⁸“Then the beast goes into its ^alairAnd dwells in its ¹den.⁹“Out of the ¹^,^asouth comes the storm,And out of the ²north the cold.¹⁰“From the breath of God ^aice is made,And the expanse of the waters is frozen.¹¹“Also with moisture He ^aloads the thick cloud;He ^bscatters ^cthe cloud of His ¹lightning.¹²“It changes direction, turning around by His guidance,That ¹it may do whatever He ^acommands ²itOn the ^bface of the inhabited earth.¹³“Whether for ¹^,^acorrection, or for ^bHis world,Or for ^clovingkindness, He causes it to ²happen.¹⁴“Give ear to this, O Job,Stand and carefully consider the wondrous deeds of God.¹⁵“Do you know how God establishes them,And makes the ¹lightning of His cloud to shine?¹⁶“Do you know about the layers of the thick clouds,The ^awonders of one ¹^,^bperfect in knowledge,¹⁷You whose garments are hot,When the land is quiet because of the south wind?¹⁸“Can you, with Him, ^aspread out the skies,Strong as a molten mirror?¹⁹“Make us know what we shall say to Him;We ^acannot arrange our case because of darkness.²⁰“Shall it be recounted to Him that I would speak?¹If a man says a word, will He indeed be swallowed up?²¹“So now ¹men do not see the light which is bright in the skies;But the wind has passed and cleared them.²²“Out of the north comes golden splendor;Around God is fearsome majesty.²³“The Almighty—^awe cannot find Him;He is ^bexalted in powerAnd ^cHe will not afflict ^djustice and abundant righteousness.²⁴“Therefore men ^afear Him;He does not ^bregard any who are wise of heart.”

Yahweh Answers Job

38Then Yahweh ^aanswered Job out of the ¹whirlwind and said,

²“Who is this that ^adarkens counselBy words without knowledge?³“Now ^agird up your loins like a man,And ^bI will ask you, and you make Me know!⁴“Where were you ^awhen I laid the foundation of the earth?Tell Me, if you know understanding,⁵Who set its ^ameasurements? Since you know.Or who stretched the line on it?⁶“On what ^awere its bases sunk?Or who laid its cornerstone,⁷When the morning stars sang togetherAnd all the ^asons of God shouted for joy?⁸“Or who ^aenclosed the sea with doorsWhen, bursting forth, it went out from the womb,⁹When I made a cloud its garmentAnd dense gloom its swaddling band,¹⁰And I ¹^,^aplaced boundaries on itAnd set a bolt and doors,¹¹And I said, ‘Thus far you shall come, but no farther;And here shall your proud waves stop’?

Yahweh Answers Job, “Have You?”

¹²“Have you ¹ever in your life commanded the morning,And caused the dawn to know its place,¹³That it might seize ^athe ends of the earth,And ^bthe wicked be shaken out of it?¹⁴“It is changed like clay under the seal;And they stand forth like clothing.¹⁵“^aFrom the wicked their light is withheld,And the arm ^braised high is broken.¹⁶“Have you entered into ^athe springs of the seaOr walked ¹in the recesses of the deep?¹⁷“Have the gates of death been revealed to you,Or have you seen the gates of the ^ashadow of death?¹⁸“Have you carefully considered the ¹expanse of ^athe earth?Tell Me, if you know all this.¹⁹“Where is the way to where the light dwells?And darkness, where is its place,²⁰That you may take it to ^aits territoryAnd that you may discern the paths to its ¹home?²¹“You know, for ^ayou were born then,And the number of your days is great!²²“Have you entered the storehouses ^aof the snow,Or have you seen the storehouses of the ^bhail,²³Which I have reserved for the time of distress,For the day of war and battle?²⁴“Where is the way that ^athe light is divided,Or the east wind scattered on the earth?²⁵“Who has cleft a conduit for the flood,Or a way for the thunderbolt,²⁶To bring ^arain on a land without ¹people,On a desert without a man in it,²⁷To ^asatisfy the waste and desolate landAnd to make the growth of grass to sprout?²⁸“Has ^athe rain a father?Or who has begotten the drops of dew?²⁹“From whose womb has come the ^aice?And the frost of heaven, who has given it birth?³⁰“Water ¹becomes hard like stone,And the surface of the deep ²is interlocked.³¹“Can you bind the chains of the ^aPleiades,Or loose the cords of Orion?³²“Can you lead forth a ¹constellation in its season,And guide the Bear with her ²satellites?³³“Do you know the ^astatutes of the heavens,Or fix their rule over the earth?³⁴“Can you raise your voice up to the clouds,So that an ^aabundance of water will cover you?³⁵“Can you ^asend forth lightnings that they may goAnd say to you, ‘Here we are’?³⁶“Who has ^agiven wisdom in the ¹innermost beingOr given ^bunderstanding to the ²mind?³⁷“Who can count the clouds by wisdom,Or ^atip the water jars of the heavens,³⁸When the dust hardens into a massAnd the clods stick together?

Yahweh Answers Job, “Where Were You?”

³⁹“Can you hunt the ^aprey for the lion,Or fulfill the appetite of the young lions,⁴⁰When they ^acrouch in their densAnd lie in wait in their lair?⁴¹“Who prepares for ^athe raven its provisionWhen its young cry for help to GodAnd wander about without food?

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

15Now all the ^atax collectors and the ¹sinners were coming near Him to listen to Him. ²And both the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling, saying, “This man receives sinners and ^aeats with them.”

³So He told them this parable, saying, ⁴“^aWhat man among you, if he has one hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the ¹open pasture and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? ⁵“And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. ⁶“And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ ⁷“I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

The Parable of the Lost Drachma

⁸“Or what woman, if she has ten ¹drachmas and loses one ²drachma, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? ⁹“And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the ¹drachma which I had lost!’ ¹⁰“In the same way, I tell you, there is joy ^ain the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

The Parable of the Prodigal Son

¹¹And He said, “A man had two sons. ¹²“And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me ^athe share of the estate that falls to me.’ So he divided his ¹^,^bwealth between them. ¹³“And not many days later, the younger son gathered everything together and went on a journey into a distant country, and there he squandered his estate living recklessly. ¹⁴“Now when he had spent everything, a severe famine occurred in that country, and he began to be impoverished. ¹⁵“So he went and ¹hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. ¹⁶“And he was desiring to be fed with the ¹pods that the swine were eating, and no one was giving anything to him. ¹⁷“But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired men have more than enough bread, but I am dying here with hunger! ¹⁸‘I will rise up and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before you. ¹⁹“I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me as one of your hired men.”’ ²⁰“So he rose up and came to ¹his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and ²^,^aembraced him and kissed him. ²¹“And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ ²²“But the father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly bring out ^athe best robe and put it on him, and ^bput a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet, ²³and bring the fattened calf, slaughter it, and let us eat and celebrate, ²⁴for this son of mine was ^adead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’ And they began to celebrate.

²⁵“Now his older son was in the field, and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing. ²⁶“And summoning one of the servants, he began inquiring what these things could be. ²⁷“And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has received him back safe and sound.’ ²⁸“But he became angry and was not wanting to go in, and his father came out and began pleading with him. ²⁹“But he answered and said to his father, ‘Look! For so many years I have been serving you and never have I ¹neglected a command of yours. And yet never have you given me a young goat, so that I might celebrate with my friends. ³⁰‘But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your ¹^,^awealth with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him.’ ³¹“And he said to him, ‘Child, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. ³²‘But we had to celebrate and rejoice, for this brother of yours was ^adead and is alive, and was lost and has been found.’”

God Is Our Refuge and Strength

Selah.⁸Come, ^abehold the works of Yahweh,¹Who has appointed ^bdesolations in the earth.⁹He ^amakes wars to cease to the end of the earth;He ^bbreaks the bow and cuts up the spear;He ^cburns the chariots with fire.¹⁰“¹Cease striving and ^aknow that I am God;I will be ^bexalted among the ²nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”¹¹Yahweh of hosts is with us;The God of Jacob is our stronghold. God Is King of All the Earth

O ^aclap your hands, all peoples;^bMake a loud shout to God with the sound of a shout of ¹joy.²For Yahweh Most High is ¹^,^afearsome,A ^bgreat King over all the earth.³He ^asubdues peoples under usAnd nations under our feet.⁴He chooses our ^ainheritance for us,The ^bpride of Jacob whom He loves. ¹ Selah.⁵God has ^aascended ¹with a loud shout,Yahweh, ²with the ^bsound of a trumpet.⁶^aSing praises to God, sing praises;Sing praises to ^bour King, sing praises.⁷For God is the ^aKing of all the earth;Sing praises ^bwith a ¹skillful psalm.⁸God ^areigns over the nations,God ¹sits on ^bHis holy throne.⁹The ^anobles of the peoples have assembled themselves with the ^bpeople of the God of Abraham,For the ^cshields of the earth belong to God;He ¹is ^dhighly exalted.
