Jonah’s Anger

4But this was a great evil to Jonah, and he became ^aangry. ²And he ^aprayed to Yahweh and said, “Ah! O Yahweh, was not this my word to myself while I was still in my own land? Therefore I went ahead to ^bflee to Tarshish, for I knew that You are a ^cgracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, and one who relents concerning evil. ³“So now, O Yahweh, please ^atake my ¹life from me, for death is ^bbetter to me than life.” ⁴And Yahweh said, “Do you have good reason to be angry?”

⁵Then Jonah went out from the city and sat east of the city. And there he made a booth for himself and ^asat under it in the shade until he could see what would happen in the city. ⁶So Yahweh God appointed a ¹plant, and it came up over Jonah to be a shade over his head to deliver him from his miserable evil. And Jonah was ²extremely glad about the plant. ⁷But God appointed a worm at the ¹breaking of dawn the next day, and it struck the plant, and ²it ^adried up. ⁸Then it happened that as the sun rose up, God appointed a scorching ^aeast wind, and the ^bsun struck down on Jonah’s head so that he became faint and asked with all his soul to die and said, “^cDeath is better to me than life.”

⁹Then God said to Jonah, “Do you have good reason to be angry about the plant?” And he said, “I have good reason to be angry, even to death.” ¹⁰Then Yahweh said, “You had pity on the plant for which you did not work and which you did not cause to grow, which ¹came to be overnight and perished ²overnight. ¹¹“So should I not ^ahave pity on Nineveh, the great city, in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not ^bknow the difference between their right and left hand, as well as many ¹^,^canimals?”

Uzziah Reigns over Judah

26And all the people of Judah took ¹Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in the place of his father Amaziah. ²He built Eloth and restored it to Judah after the king slept with his fathers. ³Uzziah was ^asixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was ¹Jechiliah of Jerusalem. ⁴And he did what was right in the sight of Yahweh, according to all that his father Amaziah had done. ⁵^aAnd he continued to seek God in the days of Zechariah, ^bwho had understanding ¹through the vision of God; and ²^,^cas long as he sought Yahweh, God made him succeed.

Uzziah’s Fame Spreads Afar

⁶Then he went out and ^afought against the Philistines, and broke down the wall of Gath and the wall of Jabneh and the wall of Ashdod; and he built cities in the area of Ashdod and among the Philistines. ⁷^aAnd God helped him against the Philistines, and against the Arabians who lived in Gur-baal, and the Meunites. ⁸The Ammonites also gave ^atribute to Uzziah, and his ¹fame extended to the border of Egypt, for he became very strong. ⁹Moreover, Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at ^athe Corner Gate and at the ^bValley Gate and at the corner buttress and strengthened them. ¹⁰He also built towers in the wilderness and ^ahewed many cisterns, for he had much livestock, both in the ¹Shephelah and in the plain. He also had plowmen and vinedressers in the hill country and the fertile fields, for he loved the soil. ¹¹Moreover, Uzziah had a military force which could wage war, which went out for military duty by divisions according to the number of their muster, prepared by the hand of Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the officer, under the hand of Hananiah, one of the king’s officials. ¹²The total number of the heads of the ¹households, of mighty men of valor, was 2,600. ¹³And under their hand was a ¹mighty army of ^a307,500, who could wage war with mighty power, to help the king against the enemy. ¹⁴Moreover, Uzziah prepared ¹for all the army shields, spears, helmets, body armor, bows, and stones for slings. ¹⁵In Jerusalem he also made devices of war devised by skillful designers to be on the towers and on the corners for the purpose of shooting arrows and great stones. Hence his ¹fame spread afar, for he was marvelously helped until he was strong.

Uzziah’s Pride

¹⁶But ^awhen he became strong, his heart was so ¹proud that he acted corruptly, and he was unfaithful to Yahweh his God. And ^bhe entered the temple of Yahweh to burn incense on the altar of incense. ¹⁷Then ^aAzariah the priest entered after him and with him eighty priests of Yahweh, men of valor. ¹⁸^aAnd they stood against Uzziah the king and said to him, “^bIt is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to Yahweh, ^cbut for the priests, the sons of Aaron who are set apart as holy to burn incense. Get out of the sanctuary, for you have been unfaithful and will have no honor from Yahweh God.” ¹⁹But Uzziah, with a censer in his hand for burning incense, was enraged; and while he was enraged with the priests, ^athe leprosy broke out on his forehead before the priests in the house of Yahweh, beside the altar of incense. ²⁰And Azariah the chief priest and all the priests looked at him, and behold, he was leprous on his forehead; and they hurried him out of there, and he himself also hastened to get out because Yahweh had smitten him. ²¹^aSo King Uzziah was a leper to the day of his death; and he lived in ^ba separate house, being a leper, for he was cut off from the house of Yahweh. And Jotham his son was over the king’s house, judging the people of the land.

²²Now the rest of the acts of Uzziah, first to last, the prophet ^aIsaiah, the son of Amoz, has written. ²³So Uzziah slept with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers ^ain the field of the grave which belonged to the kings, for they said, “He is a leper.” And Jotham his son became king in his place.

Jesus Is Risen!

28^aNow after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, ^bMary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave. ²And behold, there was a great earthquake, for ^aan angel of the ¹Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away ^bthe stone and sat upon it. ³And ^ahis appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. ⁴And the guards quaked from fear of him and became like dead men. ⁵And the angel answered and said to the women, “¹^,^aDo not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. ⁶“He is not here, for He has risen, ^ajust as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying. ⁷“And go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and behold, He is going ahead of you ^ainto Galilee, there you will see Him; behold, I have told you.”

⁸And they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy and ran to report it to His disciples. ⁹And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him. ¹⁰Then Jesus *said to them, “¹^,^aDo not be afraid; go and report to ^bMy brothers to leave ^cfor Galilee, and there they will see Me.”

¹¹Now while they were on their way, behold, some of ^athe guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all that had happened. ¹²And when they had assembled with the elders and took counsel together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, ¹³and said, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came by night and stole Him away while we were asleep.’ ¹⁴“And if this is heard before ^athe governor, we will win him over and ¹keep you out of trouble.” ¹⁵And they took the money and did as they had been instructed; and this story was widely ^aspread among the Jews, and is ^bto this day.

The Great Commission

¹⁶But the eleven disciples proceeded ^ato Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. ¹⁷And when they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but ^asome doubted. ¹⁸And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “^aAll authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. ¹⁹“¹^,^aGo therefore and ^bmake disciples of ^call the nations, ^dbaptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, ²⁰teaching them to keep all that I commanded you; and behold, ^aI am with you ¹always, even to ^bthe end of the age.”

The Preaching of John the Baptist

1The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, ^athe Son of God.

²^aAs it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “^bBehold, I send My messenger ¹ahead of You,Who will prepare Your way;

³^aThe voice of one crying in the wilderness,‘Make ready the way of the ¹Lord,Make His paths straight.’”

⁴¹John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness ²^,^apreaching a baptism of repentance for the ^bforgiveness of sins. ⁵And all the region of Judea was going out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. ⁶And John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore ^aa leather belt around his waist and was eating locusts and wild honey. ⁷And he was ¹preaching, saying, “After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the strap of His sandals. ⁸“I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

The Baptism of Jesus

⁹¹^,^aNow it happened that in those days Jesus ^bcame from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. ¹⁰And immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens ¹opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him; ¹¹and a voice came out of the heavens: “^aYou are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”

¹²^aAnd immediately the Spirit *drove Him to go out into the wilderness. ¹³And He was in the wilderness forty days being tempted by ^aSatan; and He was with the wild beasts, and the angels were ministering to Him.

Jesus Preaches in Galilee

¹⁴^aNow after John had been delivered up into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, ¹^,^bpreaching the gospel of God, ¹⁵and saying, “^aThe time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God ¹is at hand; ^brepent and ²believe in the gospel.”

¹⁶^aAs He was going along by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. ¹⁷And Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” ¹⁸And immediately they left their nets and followed Him. ¹⁹And going on a little farther, He saw ¹James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who were also in the boat mending the nets. ²⁰And immediately He called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went away ¹to follow Him.

²¹^aAnd they *went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath ^bHe entered the synagogue and began to teach. ²²^aAnd they were astonished at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. ²³And immediately there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, ²⁴saying, “^aWhat ¹do we have to do with You, Jesus the ^bNazarene? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—^cthe Holy One of God!” ²⁵And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” ²⁶And throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him. ²⁷And they were all ^aamazed, so that they were arguing among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” ²⁸And immediately the news about Him spread everywhere into all the surrounding district of Galilee.

Simon’s Mother-in-Law and Many Others Healed

²⁹^aAnd immediately after they came ^bout of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. ³⁰Now Simon’s mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever; and immediately they *spoke to ¹Jesus about her. ³¹And He came to her and raised her up, taking her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she ¹began waiting on them.

³²^aNow when evening came, ^bafter the sun had set, they began bringing to Him all who were ill and those who were ^cdemon-possessed. ³³And the whole ^acity had gathered at the door. ³⁴And He ^ahealed many who were ill with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He was not permitting the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.

³⁵^aAnd in the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus rose up, went out of the house, and went away to a desolate place, and ^bwas praying there. ³⁶And Simon and his companions searched for Him; ³⁷and they found Him, and *said to Him, “Everyone is looking for You.” ³⁸And He *said to them, “Let us go elsewhere, to the towns nearby, so that I may ¹preach there also; for that is what I came out for.” ³⁹^aAnd He went, ¹preaching in their synagogues throughout all Galilee and casting out the demons.

⁴⁰^aAnd a leper *came to ¹Jesus, pleading with Him and ^bfalling on his knees before Him, and saying, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” ⁴¹And moved with compassion, He stretched out His hand and touched him, and *said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.” ⁴²And immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed. ⁴³And He sternly warned him and immediately sent him away, ⁴⁴and He *said to him, “^aSee that you say nothing to anyone; but ^bgo, show yourself to the priest and ^coffer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” ⁴⁵But he went out and began to ^aproclaim it freely and to ^bspread the news around, to such an extent that ¹Jesus could no longer publicly enter a city, but ²stayed out in desolate areas; and ^cthey were coming to Him from everywhere.
