John 20 - 21
The Empty Tomb
20aNow on the first day of the week, bMary Magdalene *came early to the tomb, while it *was still dark, and *saw cthe stone already taken away from the tomb. 2So she *ran and *came to Simon Peter and to the other adisciple whom Jesus loved, and *said to them, “bThey have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.” 3aSo Peter and the other disciple went forth, and they were going to the tomb. 4And the two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first; 5and astooping and looking in, he *saw the blinen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in. 6And so Simon Peter also *came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he *saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7and athe face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the blinen wrappings, but folded up in a place by itself. 8So the other disciple who ahad first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed. 9For as yet athey did not understand the Scripture, bthat He must rise again from the dead. 10So the disciples went away again ato where they were staying.
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
11aBut Mary was standing outside the tomb crying; and so, as she was crying, she bstooped to look into the tomb; 12and she *saw atwo angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. 13And they *said to her, “aWoman, why are you crying?” She *said to them, “Because bthey have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” 14When she had said this, she turned around and *asaw Jesus standing there, and bdid not know that it was Jesus. 15Jesus *said to her, “aWoman, why are you crying? Whom are you seeking?” Thinking Him to be the gardener, she *said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” 16Jesus *said to her, “Mary!” She turned and *said to Him ain 1Hebrew, “bRabboni!” (which means, Teacher). 17Jesus *said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to aMy brothers and say to them, ‘I bascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’” 18aMary Magdalene *came, bannouncing to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.
Jesus Appears to His Disciples
19So while it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and while the doors were shut where the disciples were, for afear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and *said to them, “1,bPeace be with you.” 20And when He had said this, aHe showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then brejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21So Jesus said to them again, “aPeace be with you; bas the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22And when He had said this, He abreathed on them and *said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23“aIf you forgive the sins of any, their sins 1have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.”
24But aThomas, one of bthe twelve, called 1,cDidymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in aHis hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, bI will not believe.”
26And 1after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus *came, the doors having been 2shut, and stood in their midst and said, “aPeace be with you.” 27Then He *said to Thomas, “aBring your finger here, and see My hands; and bring your hand here and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.” 28Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” 29Jesus *said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? aBlessed are those who did not see, and yet believed.”
Why This Gospel Was Written
30aTherefore many other 1,bsigns Jesus also did in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31but these have been written aso that you may believe that Jesus is the 1Christ, bthe Son of God; and that cbelieving you may have life in His name.
Jesus Appears at the Sea of Galilee
21After these things Jesus 1,amanifested Himself bagain to the disciples at the cSea of Tiberias, and He manifested Himself in this way. 2Simon Peter, and aThomas called 1Didymus, and bNathanael of cCana in Galilee, and dthe sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3Simon Peter *said to them, “I am going fishing.” They *said to him, “We will also come with you.” They went out and got into the boat; and athat night they caught nothing.
4But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not aknow that it was Jesus. 5So Jesus *said to them, “Children, ado you have 1any fish?” They answered Him, “No.” 6And He said to them, “aCast the net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish. 7aTherefore that disciple whom Jesus loved *said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and cast himself into the sea. 8But the other disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but about 1two hundred cubits away, dragging the net full of fish.
9So when they got out on the land, they *saw a charcoal afire in place and bfish placed on it, and bread. 10Jesus *said to them, “Bring some of the afish which you have now caught.” 11Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land, full of large fish, 153; and although there were so many, the net was not torn.
Jesus Provides Breakfast
12Jesus *said to them, “Come, have abreakfast.” None of the disciples dared to question Him, “Who are You?” knowing that it was the Lord. 13Jesus *came and *took athe bread and *gave it to them, and the bfish likewise. 14This is now the athird time that Jesus 1was manifested to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead.
Peter’s Restoration and Commission
15So when they had afinished breakfast, Jesus *said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you 1,blove Me more than these?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I 2love You.” He *said to him, “Tend cMy lambs.” 16He *said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you 1love Me?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I 2love You.” He *said to him, “aShepherd My sheep.” 17He *said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you 1love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him athe third time, “Do you 2love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, bYou know all things; You know that I 3love You.” Jesus *said to him, “cTend My sheep. 18“Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird yourself and walk wherever you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will gird you, and bring you where you do not wish to go.” 19Now this He said, asignifying by bwhat kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He *said to him, “cFollow Me!”
Jesus’ Command to Follow Him
20Peter, turning around, *saw the adisciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had bleaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” 21So Peter seeing him *said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?” 22Jesus *said to him, “If I want him to remain auntil I come, what is that to you? You bfollow Me!” 23Therefore this saying went out among athe brothers that this disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain buntil I come, what is that to you?”
24This is the disciple who ais bearing witness to these things and wrote these things, and we know that his witness is true.
25And there are also amany other things which Jesus did, which if they *were written one after the other, I suppose that even the world itself *could not contain the books that *would be written.
