The Ruler Will Come from Bethlehem

5“¹Now muster yourselves in troops, daughter of troops;²They have laid siege against us;With a rod they will ^astrike the judge of Israel on the cheek.²“¹But as for ^ayou, Bethlehem Ephrathah,Too little to be among the clans of Judah,From ^byou One will go forth for Me to be ^cruler in Israel.²His goings forth are ^dfrom everlasting,From the ancient days.”³Therefore He will ^agive them up until the timeWhen she ^bwho is in childbirth has borne a child.Then the ^cremainder of His brothersWill return to the sons of Israel.⁴And He will stand and ^ashepherd His flockIn the strength of Yahweh,In the majesty of the name of Yahweh His God.And they will ¹remainBecause ²at that time He will be greatTo the ^bends of the earth.⁵And this One ^awill be peace.When the ^bAssyrian enters our land,When he treads on our ¹citadels,Then we will raise against himSeven shepherds and eight princes of men.⁶And they will ^ashepherd the land of Assyria with the sword,The land of ^bNimrod at its entrances;And He will ^cdeliver us from the AssyrianWhen he enters our landAnd when he treads within our borders.⁷Then the ^aremnant of JacobWill be among many peoplesLike ^bdew from Yahweh,Like ^cshowers on vegetationWhich do not hope for manOr wait for the sons of men.⁸Then the remnant of JacobWill be among the nations,Among many peoples^aLike a lion among the beasts of the forest,Like a young lion among flocks of sheep,Which, if it passes through,^bTramples down and ^ctears,And there is ^dnone to deliver.⁹Your hand will be ^araised up against your adversaries,And all your enemies will be cut off.¹⁰“And it will be in that day,” declares Yahweh,“^aThat I will cut off your ^bhorses from among youAnd destroy your chariots.¹¹“And I will cut off the ^acities of your landAnd pull down all your ^bfortifications.¹²“And I will cut off ^asorceries from your hand,And you will have soothsaying no more.¹³“^aAnd I will cut off your graven imagesAnd your sacred pillars from among youSo that you will no longer worshipThe work of your hands.¹⁴“And I will uproot your ¹^,^aAsherim from among youAnd ²eradicate your cities.¹⁵“And I will ^aexecute vengeance in anger and wrathOn the nations which have not ¹^,^blistened.”

Yahweh’s Case Against His People

6¹^,^aListen now to what Yahweh is saying, “Arise, plead your case ²before the mountains,And let the hills ³^,^blisten to your voice.

²“¹^,^aListen, you mountains, to the case of Yahweh,And you enduring ^bfoundations of the earth,Because ^cYahweh has a case against His people;Even with Israel He will reprove.³“^aMy people, ^bwhat have I done to you,And ^chow have I wearied you? Answer Me.⁴“Indeed, I ^abrought you up from the land of EgyptAnd ^bransomed you from the house of slavery,And I sent before you ^cMoses, Aaron, and ^dMiriam.⁵“My people, remember nowWhat ^aBalak king of Moab counseledAnd what Balaam son of Beor answered him,And from ^bShittim to ^cGilgal,So ¹that you might know the ^drighteous acts of Yahweh.”

What Yahweh Requires

⁶^aWith what shall I come before YahwehAnd bow myself before the God on high?Shall I come before Him with ^bburnt offerings,With yearling calves?⁷Is Yahweh pleased with ^athousands of rams,With ten thousand rivers of oil?Shall I give my ^bfirstborn for my transgression,The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?⁸He has ^atold you, O man, what is good;And ^bwhat does Yahweh require of youBut to ^cdo justice, to ^dlove lovingkindness,And to walk ¹^,^ehumbly with your God?⁹The voice of Yahweh will call to the city—And it is sound wisdom to fear Your name:“Hear, O tribe. Who even has appointed ¹its time?¹⁰“Is there yet a man in the wicked house,Along with treasures of ^awickedness,And a ¹^,^bshort measure which is cursed?¹¹“Can I purify wicked ^ascalesAnd a bag of deceptive weights?¹²“For the rich men of ¹the city are full of ^aviolence,And her inhabitants speak ^blies,And their ^ctongue is deceitful in their mouth.¹³“So also I will make you ^asick, striking you down,^bDesolating you because of your sins.¹⁴“You will eat, but you will ^anot be satisfied,And your ¹vileness will be in your midst.And you will try to remove something for safekeeping,But you will ^bnot cause anything to escape,And that which you do have escape, I will give to the sword.¹⁵“You will sow but you will ^anot reap.You will tread the olive but will not anoint yourself with oil;And the grapes, but you will ^bnot drink wine.¹⁶“The statutes of ^aOmriAnd all the works of the house of ^bAhab are kept;And in their counsels you ^cwalk.Therefore I will give you up as ^dan object of horrorAnd ¹your inhabitants as an ^eobject of hissing,And you will bear the ^freproach of My people.”
