Joseph Sends for Jacob

45Then Joseph could not restrain himself before all those who stood by him, and he called out, “Have everyone go out from me.” So there ¹was no man with him ^awhen Joseph made himself known to his brothers. ²^aThen he ¹wept loudly. And the Egyptians heard it, and the household of Pharaoh heard it. ³Then Joseph said to his brothers, “^aI am Joseph! ^bIs my father still alive?” But his brothers could not answer him, for ^cthey were terrified at his presence.

⁴Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Please come near to me.” And they came near. And he said, “I am Joseph, your brother, whom you ^asold into Egypt. ⁵“So now do not be grieved or angry ¹with yourselves because ^ayou sold me here, for ^bGod sent me before you to preserve life. ⁶“For the famine has been in the land ^athese two years, and there are still five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvesting. ⁷“^aSo God sent me before you to establish for you a remnant in the earth and to keep you alive for a great remnant of survivors. ⁸“So now, it was not you who sent me here, but God; and He has set me as a ^afather to Pharaoh and lord of all his household and ruler over all the land of Egypt. ⁹“Hurry and go up to my father, and ^asay to him, ‘Thus says your son Joseph, “God has set me as lord of all Egypt; come down to me, do not delay. ¹⁰“And you shall ¹live in the land of ^aGoshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your children’s children and your flocks and your herds and all that you have. ¹¹“There I will also ^aprovide for you, for there are still five years of famine to come, lest you and your household and all that you have be impoverished.”’ ¹²“And behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin see, that it is my mouth which is speaking to you. ¹³“So you must tell my father of all my glory in Egypt and all that you have seen; and you must hurry and ^abring my father down here.” ¹⁴Then he fell on his brother Benjamin’s neck and ^awept, and Benjamin wept on his neck. ¹⁵He kissed all his brothers and wept on them, and afterward his brothers talked with him.

¹⁶Now ^athe ¹news was heard in Pharaoh’s house, saying, “Joseph’s brothers have come.” And it was good in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants. ¹⁷Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Say to your brothers, ‘Do this: load your beasts and ¹go to the land of Canaan, ¹⁸and take your father and your households and come to me, and ^aI will give you the ¹best of the land of Egypt, and you will eat the fat of the land.’ ¹⁹“Now you are commanded, ‘Do this: ¹take ^awagons from the land of Egypt for your little ones and for your wives, and bring your father and come. ²⁰‘Now do not ¹concern yourselves with your goods, for the ²best of all the land of Egypt is yours.’”

²¹Then the sons of Israel did so; and Joseph gave them ^awagons according to the ¹command of Pharaoh, and he gave them provisions for the journey. ²²To ¹each of them he gave ^achanges of garments, but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver and ^bfive changes of garments. ²³Now to his father he sent ¹as follows: ten donkeys loaded with the ²best things of Egypt and ten female donkeys loaded with grain and bread and sustenance for his father ³on the journey.

²⁴So he sent his brothers away, and they departed. And he said to them, “Do not be stirred up on the journey.” ²⁵Then they went up from Egypt, and came to the land of Canaan to their father Jacob. ²⁶And they told him, saying, “Joseph is still alive, and indeed he is ruler over all the land of Egypt.” But ¹his heart was stunned, for ^ahe did not believe them. ²⁷Yet they told him all the words of Joseph that he had spoken to them, and he saw the ^awagons that Joseph had sent to carry him. Then the spirit of their father Jacob revived. ²⁸And Israel said, “It is enough! My son Joseph is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.”

Jacob Moves to Egypt

46So Israel set out with all that he had and came to ^aBeersheba and offered sacrifices to the ^bGod of his father Isaac. ²^aAnd God spoke to Israel ¹in visions of the night and said, “^bJacob, Jacob.” And he said, “Here I am.” ³And He said, “^aI am God, the God of your father; do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will ^bmake you a great nation there. ⁴“^aI Myself will go down with you to Egypt, and ^bI Myself will also bring you up again; and ^cJoseph will ¹close your eyes with his hand.”

⁵Then Jacob arose from Beersheba; and the sons of Israel carried their father Jacob and their little ones and their wives in the ^awagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. ⁶And they took their livestock and their possessions, which they had accumulated in the land of Canaan, and they ^acame to Egypt, Jacob and all his seed with him: ⁷his sons and his grandsons with him, his daughters and his granddaughters, and all his seed he brought with him to Egypt.

⁸Now these are the ^anames of the sons of Israel—of Jacob and his sons—who were coming to Egypt: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn. ⁹The sons of Reuben: Hanoch and Pallu and Hezron and Carmi. ¹⁰The ^asons of Simeon: ¹Jemuel and Jamin and Ohad and ²Jachin and ³Zohar and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman. ¹¹The sons of Levi: ¹Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. ¹²The sons of Judah: Er and Onan and Shelah and Perez and Zerah (but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan). And the ^asons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. ¹³The sons of Issachar: Tola and ¹Puvvah and ²Iob and Shimron. ¹⁴The sons of Zebulun: Sered and Elon and Jahleel. ¹⁵These are the sons of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob in Paddan-aram, with his daughter Dinah; ¹all his sons and his daughters numbered thirty-three.

¹⁶The ^asons of Gad: ¹Ziphion and Haggi, Shuni and ²Ezbon, Eri and ³Arodi and Areli. ¹⁷The ^asons of Asher: Imnah and Ishvah and Ishvi and Beriah and their sister Serah. And the ^bsons of Beriah: Heber and Malchiel. ¹⁸These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah; and she bore to Jacob these sixteen persons.

¹⁹The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. ²⁰^aNow to Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, bore to him. ²¹The ^asons of Benjamin: Bela and Becher and Ashbel, Gera and Naaman, ¹Ehi and Rosh, ²Muppim and ³Huppim and Ard. ²²These are the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob; there were fourteen persons in all.

²³The sons of Dan: ¹Hushim. ²⁴The sons of Naphtali: ¹Jahzeel and Guni and Jezer and ²Shillem.

²⁵These are the ^asons of Bilhah, whom ^bLaban gave to his daughter Rachel, and she bore these to Jacob; there were seven persons in all. ²⁶^aAll the persons belonging to Jacob, who came to Egypt, who came out of his loins, excluding the wives of Jacob’s sons, were sixty-six persons in all, ²⁷and the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt were ¹two; ^aall the persons of the house of Jacob, who came to Egypt, were seventy.

²⁸Now he sent Judah before him to Joseph, to point out the way before him to ^aGoshen; and they came into the land of Goshen. ²⁹And Joseph harnessed his chariot and went up to Goshen to meet his father Israel; as soon as he appeared ¹before him, he fell on his neck and ^awept on his neck a long time. ³⁰Then Israel said to Joseph, “Now I can die, since I have seen your face, that you are still alive.” ³¹And Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “^aI will go up and tell Pharaoh and say to him, ‘My brothers and my father’s household, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me; ³²and the men are shepherds, for they have been ¹keepers of livestock; and they have brought their flocks and their herds and all that they have.’ ³³“And it will be when Pharaoh calls you and says, ‘^aWhat is your occupation?’ ³⁴then you shall say, ‘Your servants have been ¹^,^akeepers of livestock from our youth and until now, both we and our fathers,’ that you may ²live in the land of ^bGoshen; for every shepherd is ^can abomination to the Egyptians.”

Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus’ Daughter

²¹^aAnd when Jesus had crossed over again in ^bthe boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He ¹stayed ^cby the seashore. ²²^aAnd one of ^bthe synagogue ¹officials named Jairus *came up, and on seeing Him, *fell at His feet ²³and *pleaded with Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death; please come, that by coming, ^aYou may lay Your hands on her, so that she will ¹be saved and live.” ²⁴And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him.

²⁵And a woman—who had a hemorrhage for twelve years ²⁶and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse— ²⁷after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His garment. ²⁸For she was saying, “If I just touch His garments, I will ¹be saved from this.” ²⁹And immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she knew within her body that she had been healed of her ^aaffliction. ³⁰And immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that ^athe power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and was saying, “Who touched My garments?” ³¹And His disciples were saying to Him, “You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’” ³²And He was looking around to see the woman who had done this. ³³But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. ³⁴And He said to her, “Daughter, ^ayour faith has ¹saved you; ^bgo in peace and be healed of your ^caffliction.”

³⁵While He was still speaking, they *came from the house of the ^asynagogue official, saying, “Your daughter has died; why trouble the Teacher anymore?” ³⁶But Jesus, overhearing what had been spoken, *said to the ^asynagogue official, “^bDo not be afraid, only ¹believe.” ³⁷And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except ^aPeter and James and John the brother of James. ³⁸And they *came to the house of the ^asynagogue official; and He *saw a commotion, and people loudly crying and wailing. ³⁹And entering in, He *said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and crying? The child has not died, but is asleep.” ⁴⁰And they began laughing at Him. But putting them all out, He *took along the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and *entered the room where the child was. ⁴¹And taking the child by the hand, He *said to her, “Talitha kum!” (which translated means, “Little girl, ^aI say to you, arise!”). ⁴²And immediately the little girl stood up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded. ⁴³And He ^agave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and He said that some food should be given to her to eat.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

6^aAnd ¹Jesus went out from there and *came into ²^,^bHis hometown; and His disciples *followed Him. ²And when the Sabbath came, He began ^ato teach in the synagogue; and ^bmany listeners were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to this man, and such ¹miracles as these performed by His hands? ³“Is this man not ^athe carpenter, ^bthe son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not ^cHis sisters here with us?” And they were taking ^doffense at Him. ⁴And Jesus was saying to them, “^aA prophet is not without honor except in ¹^,^bhis hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household.” ⁵And He could do no ¹miracle there except that He ^alaid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. ⁶And He was marveling at their unbelief. ^aAnd He was going around the villages teaching.

The Twelve Sent Out

⁷^aAnd ^bHe *summoned the twelve and began to send them out ^cin pairs, and was giving them authority over the unclean spirits; ⁸^aand He instructed them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a staff only—no bread, no ¹bag, no money in their belt— ⁹but ¹to wear sandals; and He added, “Do not put on two ²tunics.” ¹⁰And He was saying to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you ¹leave town. ¹¹“And any place that does not receive you or listen to you, as you go out from there, ^ashake the dust ¹off the soles of your feet for a testimony against them.” ¹²^aAnd they went out and ¹preached that men should repent. ¹³And they were casting out many demons and ^awere anointing with oil many sick people and healing them.

The Death of John the Baptist

¹⁴^aAnd King Herod heard it, for His name had become well known; and people were saying, “^bJohn the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in Him.” ¹⁵But others were saying, “He is ^aElijah.” And others were saying, “He is ^ba prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” ¹⁶But when Herod heard it, he kept saying, “John, whom I beheaded, has risen!”

¹⁷For Herod himself had sent and had John arrested and bound in prison on account of ^aHerodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her. ¹⁸For John had been saying to Herod, “^aIt is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” ¹⁹^aNow Herodias was holding a grudge against him and was wanting to put him to death and was not able; ²⁰for ^aHerod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he was keeping him safe. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed; ¹but he ²used to enjoy listening to him. ²¹And a strategic day came when Herod on his birthday ^agave a banquet for his great men and ¹military commanders and the leading men ^bof Galilee; ²²and when the daughter of ^aHerodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and ¹his dinner guests; and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you.” ²³And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you; up to ^ahalf of my kingdom.” ²⁴And she went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” ²⁵And immediately she came in a hurry to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” ²⁶And although the king was very sorry, yet because of his oaths and because of ¹his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. ²⁷And immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded him to bring back his head. And he went and beheaded him in the prison, ²⁸and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. ²⁹And when his disciples heard this, they came and took away his body and laid it in a tomb.

³⁰^aAnd the ^bapostles *gathered together with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught. ³¹And He *said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” (For there were many people coming and going, and ^athey did not even have time to eat.) ³²^aAnd they went away in ^bthe boat to a desolate place by themselves.

Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

³³And the people saw them going, and many recognized them and ran there together on foot from all the cities, and got there ahead of them. ³⁴And when Jesus went ¹ashore, He ^asaw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because ^bthey were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things. ³⁵And when it was already quite late, His disciples came to Him and began saying, “¹This place is desolate and it is already quite late; ³⁶send them away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves ¹something to eat.” ³⁷But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat!” ^aAnd they *said to Him, “Shall we go and spend two hundred ¹^,^bdenarii on bread and give them something to eat?” ³⁸And He *said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go look!” And when they found out, they *said, “Five, and two fish.” ³⁹And He commanded them all to ¹sit down by ²groups on the green grass. ⁴⁰And they ¹sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties. ⁴¹And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He ^ablessed the food and broke the loaves. And He kept giving them to the disciples to set before them, and He divided up the two fish among them all. ⁴²And they all ate and were satisfied, ⁴³and they picked up twelve full ^abaskets of the broken pieces, and also of the fish. ⁴⁴And there were ^afive thousand men who ate the loaves.

Jesus Walks on the Sea

⁴⁵^aAnd immediately Jesus made His disciples get into ^bthe boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to ^cBethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away. ⁴⁶And after ^abidding them farewell, He left ^bfor the mountain to pray.

⁴⁷And when it was evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land. ⁴⁸And seeing them ¹straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, at about the ²^,^afourth watch of the night He *came to them, walking on the sea; and He was intending to pass by them. ⁴⁹But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they thought that it was a ghost, and cried out; ⁵⁰for they all saw Him and were ¹terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and *said to them, “^aTake courage; it is I, ^bdo not be afraid.” ⁵¹Then He got into ^athe boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were ¹utterly amazed, ⁵²for ^athey ¹had not gained any insight about the loaves, but their ²heart ^bwas hardened.

Many Healed at Gennesaret

⁵³^aAnd when they had crossed over they came to land at Gennesaret, and moored to the shore. ⁵⁴And when they got out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him, ⁵⁵and ran about that whole region and began to carry here and there on their mats those who were sick, to ¹the place they heard He was. ⁵⁶And wherever He was entering villages, or cities, or countryside, they were laying the sick in the marketplaces, and pleading with Him that they might just ^atouch ^bthe fringe of His garment; and as many as touched it were being ¹saved from their sicknesses.

The King of Glory
