Isaiah 53 - 54

The Suffering Servant

Who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of Yahweh been revealed?
2
For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot,
And like a root out of parched ground;
He has no stately form or majesty
That we should look upon Him,
Nor appearance that we should desire Him.
3
He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

4
Surely our griefs He Himself bore,
And our sorrows He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten of God, and afflicted.
5
But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our peace fell upon Him,
And by His wounds we are healed.
6
All of us like sheep have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But Yahweh has caused the iniquity of us all
To fall on Him.

7
He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He did not open His mouth;
Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
So He did not open His mouth.
8
By oppression and judgment He was taken away;
And as for His generation, who considered
That He was cut off out of the land of the living,
That for the transgression of my people, striking was due to Him?
9
So His grave was assigned with wicked men,
Yet He was with a rich man in His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.

10
But Yahweh was pleased
To crush Him, putting Him to grief;
If You would place His soul as a guilt offering,
He will see His seed,
He will prolong His days,
And the good pleasure of Yahweh will succeed in His hand.
11
As a result of the anguish of His soul,
He will see it and be satisfied;
By His knowledge the Righteous One,
My Servant, will justify the many,
As He will bear their iniquities.
12
Therefore, I will divide for Him a portion with the many,
And He will divide the spoil with the strong;
Because He poured out His soul to death,
And was numbered with the transgressors;
Yet He Himself bore the sin of many,
And interceded for the transgressors.

The Inheritance of the Slaves of Yahweh

“Shout for joy, O barren woman, who has not given birth;
Break forth into joyful shouting and cry aloud, you who have not been in labor;
For more numerous are the sons of the desolate one
Than the sons of the married woman,” says Yahweh.
2
“Enlarge the place of your tent;
Stretch out the curtains of your dwellings, do not hold back;
Lengthen your cords
And strengthen your pegs.
3
For you will spread abroad to the right and to the left.
And your seed will possess nations
And will resettle the desolate cities.

4
“Do not be afraid, for you will not be put to shame;
And do not feel dishonored, for you will not be humiliated;
But you will forget the shame of your virginity,
And the reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more.
5
For your husband is your Maker,
Whose name is Yahweh of hosts;
And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel,
Who is called the God of all the earth.
6
For Yahweh has called you,
Like a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit,
Even like a wife of one’s youth when she is rejected,”
Says your God.
7
“For a brief moment I forsook you,
But with great compassion I will gather you.
8
In a flood of fury
I hid My face from you for a moment,
But with everlasting lovingkindness I will have compassion on you,”
Says Yahweh your Redeemer.

9
“For this is like the days of Noah to Me,
When I swore that the waters of Noah
Would not overflow the earth again;
So I have sworn that I will not be furious with you
Nor will I rebuke you.
10
For the mountains may be removed and the hills may shake,
But My lovingkindness will not be removed from you,
And My covenant of peace will not be shaken,”
Says Yahweh who has compassion on you.

11
“O afflicted one, storm‑tossed, and not comforted,
Behold, I will lay your stones in antimony,
And your foundations I will set in sapphires.
12
Moreover, I will make your battlements of rubies,
And your gates of crystal,
And your entire wall of precious stones.
13
All your sons will be taught of Yahweh;
And the peace of your sons will be great.
14
In righteousness you will be established;
You will be far from oppression, for you will not fear,
And from terror, for it will not come near you.
15
If anyone fiercely attacks you it will not be from Me.
Whoever attacks you will fall because of you.
16
Behold, I Myself have created the craftsman who blows the fire of coals
And brings out a weapon for its work;
And I have created the bringer of ruin to wreak destruction.
17
No weapon that is formed against you will succeed;
And every tongue that accuses you in judgment you will condemn.
This is the inheritance of the slaves of Yahweh,
And their righteousness is from Me,” declares Yahweh.

John 15

I Am the True Vine

“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vine-grower.
2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He cleans it so that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit from itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. 9 Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love. 10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. 11 These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.

Jesus’ Commandment Is Love

12 “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.
13 Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are My friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would abide, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. 17 This I command you, that you love one another.

If the World Hates You

18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated Me before it hated you.
19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know the One who sent Me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have both seen and hated Me and My Father as well. 25 But this happened to fulfill the word that is written in their Law, ‘They hated Me without cause.’ 26 “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness about Me, 27 and you will bear witness also, because you have been with Me from the beginning.

Psalm 76

God’s Name Is Great in Israel

For the choir director. With stringed instruments. A Psalm of Asaph. A Song.

God is known in Judah;
His name is great in Israel.
2
So His tabernacle is in Salem;
His dwelling place is in Zion.
3
There He broke the flaming arrows,
The shield and the sword and the battle. Selah.

4
You are shining,
Majestic from the mountains of prey.
5
The stouthearted were plundered,
They sank into sleep;
And none of the warriors could use his hands.
6
At Your rebuke, O God of Jacob,
Both chariot rider and horse slumbered into a deep sleep.
7
But You, You are fearsome;
And who can stand in Your presence when once You are angry?

8
You made Your cause to be heard from heaven;
The earth feared and was quiet
9
When God arose to judgment,
To save all the humble of the earth. Selah.
10
For the wrath of man shall praise You;
With a remnant of wrath You will gird Yourself.

11
Make vows to Yahweh your God and pay them;
Let all who are around Him bring gifts to the Fearsome One.
12
He will cut off the spirit of princes;
He is feared by the kings of the earth.
