Job 15 - 16

Eliphaz Says Job’s Lips Answer Against Him

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
2
“Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge
And fill his belly with the east wind?
3
Should he argue with a word that cannot be used,
Or with speech which is not profitable?
4
Indeed, you annul reverent fear
And cut off musing before God.
5
For your iniquity teaches your mouth,
And you choose the tongue of the crafty.
6
Your own mouth condemns you, and not I;
And your own lips answer against you.

7
“Were you the first man to be born,
Or were you brought forth before the hills?
8
Do you hear the secret counsel of God,
And cut down wisdom only unto yourself?
9
What do you know that we do not know?
What do you understand that is not with us?
10
Both the gray‑haired and the aged are among us,
Older than your father.
11
Are the consolations of God too small for you,
Even the word spoken gently with you?
12
Why does your heart take you away?
And why do your eyes flash,
13
That you should turn your spirit against God
And allow such words to go out of your mouth?
14
What is man, that he should be pure,
Or he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15
Behold, He puts no faith in His holy ones,
And the heavens are not pure in His sight;
16
How much less one who is abominable and corrupt,
Man, who drinks unrighteousness like water!

17
“I will tell you, listen to me;
And what I have beheld I will also recount;
18
What wise men have told,
And have not concealed from their fathers,
19
To whom alone the land was given,
And no stranger passed among them.
20
The wicked man writhes in pain all his days,
And numbered are the years stored up for the ruthless.
21
Sounds of dread are in his ears;
While at peace the destroyer comes upon him.
22
He does not believe that he will return from darkness,
And he is destined for the sword.
23
He wanders about for food, saying, ‘Where is it?’
He knows that a day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24
Distress and anguish terrify him;
They overpower him like a king ready for the attack,
25
Because he has stretched out his hand against God
And magnifies himself against the Almighty.
26
He rushes headlong at Him
With his massive shield.
27
For he has covered his face with his fat
And made his thighs heavy with flesh.
28
He has dwelt in desolate cities,
In houses no one would inhabit,
Which are destined to become ruins.
29
He will not become rich, nor will his wealth endure;
And his grain will not stretch out over the land.
30
He will not be able to depart from darkness;
The flame will wither his shoots,
And by the breath of His mouth he will depart.
31
Let him not believe in emptiness, deceiving himself;
For emptiness will be his reward,
32
When his days are not yet fulfilled,
And his palm branch is not green.
33
He will drop off his unripe grape like the vine,
And will cast off his flower like the olive tree.
34
For the company of the godless is barren,
And fire consumes the tents of the corrupt.
35
They conceive trouble and give birth to wickedness,
And their belly prepares deception.”

Troublesome Comforters

Then Job answered and said,
2
“I have heard many such things;
Troublesome comforters are you all.
3
Is there no end to windy words?
Or what pains you that you answer?
4
I too could speak like you,
If your soul were in the place of my soul.
I could compose words against you
And shake my head at you.
5
I could encourage you with my mouth,
And the solace of my lips could lessen your pain.

6
“If I speak, my pain is not lessened,
And if I cease, what will go forth from me?
7
But now He has exhausted me;
You have made desolate all my company.
8
You have shriveled me up,
It has become a witness;
And my leanness rises up against me,
It answers to my face.
9
His anger has torn me and hunted me down;
He has gnashed at me with His teeth;
My adversary sharpens his eyes to look at me.
10
They have opened their mouth wide at me;
They have struck me on the cheek in reproach;
They have massed themselves against me.
11
God hands me over to ruffians
And tosses me into the hands of the wicked.
12
I was at ease, but He shattered me,
And He has grasped me by the neck and shaken me to pieces;
He has also set me up as His target.
13
His arrows surround me.
Without mercy He splits my kidneys open;
He pours out my gall on the ground.
14
He breaks through me with breach after breach;
He runs at me like a warrior.
15
I have sewed sackcloth over my skin
And thrust my horn in the dust.
16
My face is flushed from weeping,
And the shadow of death is on my eyelids,
17
Why?—because there is no violence in my hands,
And my prayer is pure.

18
“O earth, do not cover my blood,
And let there be no resting place for my cry.
19
Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven,
And my advocate is on high.
20
My friends are my scoffers;
My eye weeps to God.
21
O that a man might argue with God
As a man with his neighbor!
22
For when a few years are past,
I shall go the way of no return.

Luke 4

The Temptation of Jesus

Now Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was being led around by the Spirit in the wilderness
2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had finished, He was hungry. 3 And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’” 5 And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this dominion and its glory, for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7 Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours.” 8 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’” 9 And he led Him to Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here, 10 for it is written,
He will command His angels concerning You to guard You,’
11 and,
On their hands they will bear You up,
Lest You strike Your foot against a stone.’”
12 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 And when the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

14 And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district.
15 And He was teaching in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

16 And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up, and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read.
17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18
The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor.
He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives,
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set free those who are oppressed,
19
To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”
20 And He closed the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all were speaking well of Him and marveling at the gracious words which were coming forth from His lips, and they were saying, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” 23 And He said to them, “No doubt you will quote this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we heard took place at Capernaum, do also here in your hometown.’” 24 And He said, “Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown. 25 But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land, 26 and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” 28 And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things, 29 and they stood up and drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the edge of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw Him down the cliff. 30 But passing through their midst, He went on His way.

Jesus Casts Out an Unclean Demon

31 And He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and He was teaching them on the Sabbath;
32 and they were amazed at His teaching, for His message was with authority. 33 And in the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Let us alone! What do we have to do with You, Jesus the Nazarene? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” 35 But Jesus rebuked it, saying, “Be quiet and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst of the people, it came out of him without doing him any harm. 36 And amazement came upon them all, and they were talking with one another saying, “What is this message? For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits and they come out.” 37 And the report about Him was spreading into every place in the surrounding district.

Peter’s Mother‑in‑Law and Many Others Healed

38 Then He stood up and left the synagogue, and entered Simon’s home. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Him to help her.
39 And standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she stood up and began waiting on them. 40 And while the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him, and laying His hands on each one of them, He was healing them. 41 And demons also were coming out of many, shouting and saying, “You are the Son of God!” But rebuking them, He was not allowing them to speak, because they knew Him to be the Christ. 42 When day came, Jesus left and went to a secluded place; and the crowds were eagerly seeking for Him, and came to Him and tried to keep Him from going away from them. 43 But He said to them, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose.” 44 So He kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
